How to Get IRS Tax Transcripts Online, by Mail, or Phone

You can get an IRS tax transcript free of charge, and the fastest way is through your IRS Individual Online Account, which delivers it as a PDF in minutes. If online verification doesn’t work for you, the IRS also offers transcripts by mail, by an automated phone line, and in person at a Taxpayer Assistance Center. Every method is free. What differs is speed, which transcript types are available, and how the IRS confirms your identity.1Internal Revenue Service. Transcript Types for Individuals and Ways to Order Them

A transcript is a summary of your return data, not a photocopy of the return you filed. For mortgage applications, student aid, and most personal record-keeping, that summary is what institutions actually want.

Which Transcript You Need

The IRS offers five transcript types, and the right one depends on why you’re asking.

  • A tax return transcript shows most line items from your original Form 1040-series return as filed. It doesn’t reflect changes made after filing. Mortgage lenders most commonly ask for this one. Available for the current year and three prior years.
  • A tax account transcript shows basic data such as filing status, taxable income, and payment types, plus any changes made after you filed. Available for the current year and nine prior years through your online account, but only the current year and three prior years by mail or phone. Older years require Form 4506-T.
  • A record of account transcript combines the return and account transcripts into one document. Available for the current year and three prior years.
  • A wage and income transcript shows data from information returns like W-2, 1098, 1099, and 5498. Available for the current year and nine prior years. Current-year data generally appears the first week of February. If you have more than roughly 85 income documents, the online system won’t generate it and you’ll need Form 4506-T.
  • A verification of non-filing letter confirms the IRS has no processed return on file for the year you specify. It does not tell you whether you were required to file. Available anytime for the three prior years; for the current year, only after June 15.1Internal Revenue Service. Transcript Types for Individuals and Ways to Order Them

Those availability windows matter if you’re mid-application. If you filed recently, or filed on paper, the current-year transcript may not be ready yet. A “No Record of Return Filed” message for the current year usually means the data hasn’t loaded, not that something is wrong.2Internal Revenue Service. Get Your Tax Records and Transcripts

Getting a Transcript Online

Sign in to your IRS Individual Online Account. Once you’re in, you can view, print, or download any of the five transcript types immediately.2Internal Revenue Service. Get Your Tax Records and Transcripts This is the only method that gives you instant access, and it’s the only one that works even if the IRS still has your old address.

If you don’t already have an account, you’ll create one through ID.me, the identity verification service the IRS uses. The process requires a photo of a government-issued ID (driver’s license, state ID, or passport) and a selfie taken with your phone or webcam. The system compares the two to confirm your identity.3Internal Revenue Service. How to Register for IRS Online Self-Help Tools

If the automated selfie match fails, ID.me routes you to a live video chat with an agent who can verify your identity manually.3Internal Revenue Service. How to Register for IRS Online Self-Help Tools This is where most people get stuck. Have your ID ready, check that your camera works, and do it in good light. Once your account is set up, you won’t need to go through full verification again.

Can’t get past ID.me? You still have mail, phone, and in-person options.

Getting a Transcript by Mail

Submit IRS Form 4506-T (Request for Transcript of Tax Return). It covers all five transcript types. A shorter version, Form 4506-T-EZ, works only for tax return transcripts.4Internal Revenue Service. About Form 4506-T, Request for Transcript of Tax Return

Fill in your name, Social Security Number or ITIN, and the mailing address the IRS has on file for you. If your current address differs from the one on your last return, include the previous address too. Select the transcript type and tax year, then mail the form to the IRS address in the instructions (it varies by state).5Internal Revenue Service. Form 4506-T – Request for Transcript of Tax Return

Allow 5 to 10 calendar days for delivery after the IRS processes your request. Transcripts go only to the address the IRS has on file, not to a different address you write on the form. That rule exists to keep someone else from redirecting your tax information.1Internal Revenue Service. Transcript Types for Individuals and Ways to Order Them

Getting a Transcript by Phone

Call the IRS automated transcript line at 800-908-9946. You’ll enter your Social Security Number and the street number from your address on file, then choose the transcript type and tax year. The call is fully automated; no live agent is involved.

Phone requests cover only tax return transcripts and tax account transcripts, and only for the current year and three prior years. For other types or older years, use your online account or mail Form 4506-T. Delivery takes 5 to 10 calendar days to your address on file.1Internal Revenue Service. Getting a Transcript in Person

If you need a transcript quickly and can’t use the online account, visit an IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center. Call ahead to schedule an appointment; walk-ins may face long waits or be turned away.

Bring two forms of identification, including at least one current government-issued photo ID such as a driver’s license, state ID, or passport. Bring your Social Security Number or ITIN, and if you filed one, a copy of the return for the year you’re requesting.6Internal Revenue Service. Contact Your Local IRS Office

When Your Address Doesn’t Match

The IRS confirms your identity for mail and phone requests partly by matching the address you provide against the one on your most recent return. If you’ve moved since filing, those requests will fail. This is one of the most common reasons people can’t get their transcript.

You have four ways to update your address with the IRS:

  • File Form 8822 (Change of Address). Allow four to six weeks for processing.
  • Use your new address on your next return, which updates the record automatically.
  • Send a signed written statement with your full name, old address, new address, and Social Security Number to the address where you filed your last return.
  • Call the IRS and update your address over the phone after verifying your identity.7Internal Revenue Service. Address Changes

If you filed a joint return, both spouses need to sign the change-of-address form or statement. Separated spouses should notify the IRS independently.7Internal Revenue Service. Address Changes

If you need a transcript soon, the four-to-six-week window for a mailed address change is a problem. The online account avoids the issue entirely because it delivers the transcript on-screen rather than to a mailing address.

When You Need a Copy of the Return Instead

A transcript is a data summary, not a photocopy of your original return. For lenders, financial aid offices, and accountants, that’s usually enough. If you need an actual copy of the return you filed, perhaps for a court proceeding, you’ll need Form 4506 (Request for Copy of Tax Return) instead.8Internal Revenue Service. Request for Copy of Tax Return

Two things change. Return copies cost $30 per tax year, and processing takes up to 75 calendar days. Transcripts are free and arrive in minutes online or 5 to 10 days by mail. Unless you specifically need a certified copy for legal use, the transcript is almost always the better choice.8Internal Revenue Service. Request for Copy of Tax Return

Having a Lender or Other Third Party Pull It

If a mortgage lender needs your transcript, they don’t need to wait for you. The IRS runs an Income Verification Express Service (IVES) that lets authorized lenders pull transcripts electronically after you sign a consent form. The lender submits Form 4506-C (IVES Request for Transcript of Tax Return), which you sign to authorize. Participating institutions include banks, credit unions, and mortgage companies that have completed the IVES application with the IRS.9Internal Revenue Service. Income Verification Express Service

If you want a tax professional or financial advisor to access your transcript without giving them power of attorney, file Form 8821 (Tax Information Authorization). It lets your designee inspect or receive your tax information for the years and tax types you specify, but doesn’t let them represent you before the IRS. For non-tax uses like lender income verification, the IRS must receive Form 8821 within 120 days of your signature.10Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 8821

What Your Transcript Will Look Like

For security, the IRS masks sensitive personal data on transcripts. Your Social Security Number appears as XXX-XX-1234, showing only the last four digits. Financial data such as income, tax liability, and payments stays fully visible.11Internal Revenue Service. What Are We Doing to Protect Taxpayer Privacy

Because the full SSN is masked, Form 4506-T includes an optional Customer File Number field. A lender or other third party can assign you a number (often your loan number), you enter it on the form, and it prints on the transcript so they can match it to your account. It can be up to 10 digits and can’t be a Social Security Number or other taxpayer ID. If you’re requesting the transcript for yourself, leave the field blank.12Internal Revenue Service.
