To get Form 1095-A from the Marketplace, log in to the account you used to enroll and download the PDF from the tax forms section, or call the Marketplace Call Center at 1-800-318-2596 to have a copy mailed. The digital version is usually posted in mid-January, and a paper copy should arrive by mid-February.1HealthCare.gov. How to Use Form 1095-A
When the Form Is Available
Marketplaces must send Form 1095-A to enrollees by January 31 following the coverage year. If that date falls on a weekend or holiday, the deadline shifts to the next business day.2Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 1095-A In practice, the digital form is often posted to your online account between mid-January and February 1, and the mailed copy should reach you by mid-February.1HealthCare.gov. How to Use Form 1095-A
If mid-February passes and nothing has arrived, check your online account before doing anything else. Downloading it yourself is faster than waiting on a replacement in the mail.
Downloading From HealthCare.gov
If you enrolled through the federal Marketplace, sign in to your HealthCare.gov account and select the application for the coverage year you need the form for, not the current plan year. Choose “Tax Forms” in the left-hand menu. Your 1095-A will appear with a “Download PDF” option. Save it and open it in any PDF viewer to print or upload into your tax software.3HealthCare.gov. If a corrected version has been issued, it will carry a “Corrected” label. Use that one instead of the original.1HealthCare.gov. How to Use Form 1095-A
If You Enrolled Through a State Exchange
Not everyone uses HealthCare.gov. Many states run their own exchanges, including Covered California, New York State of Health, and MNsure. If you enrolled through a state-based Marketplace, your 1095-A will only be available in that state’s portal. HealthCare.gov will not have it.4CMS. State-based Exchanges
The steps vary by state, but the pattern is the same: sign in, find the tax documents or tax forms section, and download the PDF. If you aren’t sure which exchange you used, check your original enrollment confirmation email.
Getting the Form by Phone
If you can’t access the online copy, call the Marketplace Call Center at 1-800-318-2596 (TTY: 1-855-889-4325). The line is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, except on holidays.5HealthCare.gov. Contact Us Hold times run longer during February and March.
Have these ready before you call so the agent can verify your identity:
- Full legal name and date of birth of the primary policyholder
- Social Security number for anyone listed on the plan
- Your Application ID, or the full address and phone number on file with the Marketplace
The call center typically needs at least two of those identifiers beyond your name to pull up your account.6HealthCare.gov. How to Log in to Your Marketplace Account Once verified, the representative can mail a duplicate copy to the address on file. If you’ve moved, update the address on the call before the form goes out. The mailed copy contains the same information as the digital version.
For a state-based exchange, call that state’s Marketplace directly rather than the federal number.
What Your 1095-A Should Show
Once you have the form in hand, check that it reports three monthly figures for each month you had Marketplace coverage:1HealthCare.gov. How to Use Form 1095-A
- Your plan premium, the total monthly cost of the plan you enrolled in
- The Second Lowest Cost Silver Plan (SLCSP) premium, the benchmark used to calculate your premium tax credit
- The advance premium tax credit paid, the subsidy sent directly to your insurer each month
If your household moved or changed plans mid-year, those monthly numbers will vary. That’s expected, and it makes reading each row carefully more important. Compare the premiums and the household members listed against your own records. Common errors include wrong premium amounts, incorrect months of coverage, and household members who weren’t actually on the plan.7Internal Revenue Service. Corrected, Incorrect or Voided Form 1095-A
If the SLCSP column is blank or looks wrong, you can look up the correct figures yourself using the HealthCare.gov tax tool, which calculates SLCSP based on your household’s coverage details.8HealthCare.gov. Health Coverage Tax Tool
Requesting a Correction
To report an error, call the Marketplace Call Center at 1-800-318-2596, or contact your state exchange directly if that’s where you enrolled. Once corrected, the Marketplace will issue a new 1095-A with “CORRECTED” checked at the top. If you haven’t filed yet, wait for that version before submitting your return.7Internal Revenue Service. Corrected, Incorrect or Voided Form 1095-A
If you already filed using the original and a corrected form arrives later, you generally do not need to file an amended return, even if the corrected numbers would mean additional tax owed. You may choose to amend, and a tax advisor can help weigh the impact.7Internal Revenue Service. Corrected, Incorrect or Voided Form 1095-A
Why You Need the Form to File
The three monthly figures on the 1095-A flow directly into Form 8962, where you reconcile the advance credits you received against what you actually qualify for based on your final yearly income. If you earned more than you estimated at enrollment, you may owe some of the credit back. If you earned less, you could receive additional credit in your refund.1HealthCare.gov. How to Use Form 1095-A
If you received advance premium tax credits and try to e-file without Form 8962, the IRS will reject the return. You’ll have to complete Form 8962, attach it, and refile.9Internal Revenue Service. How to Correct an Electronically Filed Return Rejected for a Missing Form 8962 Paper filers won’t see an immediate rejection, but the IRS will follow up by mail, delaying any refund. Failing to reconcile at all puts your future Marketplace subsidies at risk: the Marketplace will warn your household, and eventually financial assistance can be cut off.
