To get residency in Barbados, you apply under one of three main routes: the 12-month Welcome Stamp for people working remotely for foreign employers, the Special Entry and Reside Permit (SERP) for high-net-worth individuals or property owners, or permanent residency under Section 5 of the Immigration Act, which normally requires five years of continuous residence as an approved immigrant. Each route has its own income or asset threshold, its own paperwork, and its own rules about whether you can take a local job. The Immigration Act, Chapter 190, sits behind all of them, and the Barbados Immigration Department decides every application.1Barbados Law Courts. Immigration CAP 190

The Welcome Stamp: 12 Months for Remote Workers
The Welcome Stamp is the quickest way in. It is a 12-month visa for people who earn their income from employers or clients outside Barbados, and applications go through an online portal at barbadoswelcomestamp.bb.2Visit Barbados. Explore 12 Month Barbados Welcome Stamp You need to earn at least $50,000 USD annually. Approvals typically come through within seven business days, and you have 28 days after that to pay.
The initial fee is $2,000 USD for an individual or $3,000 USD for a family bundle.3Barbados Welcome Stamp. Barbados Welcome Stamp Application Renewal runs BDS $3,000 (about $1,500 USD) for an individual or BDS $4,500 (about $2,250 USD) for a family, and approved renewals may receive a 25 percent discount. Renewals are unlimited, subject to approval, and the program runs through at least December 31, 2026.
The trade-off: Welcome Stamp holders cannot take local employment or run a business that competes with Barbadian workers. The visa doesn’t grant permanent residency on its own, but the time you spend on it can count toward the five-year residency total if you later shift to immigrant status.
The Special Entry and Reside Permit (SERP)
SERP is the route for people with money to invest or property already in Barbados. It skips the standard five-year pipeline, and it splits into two categories that behave very differently.
Category 1 (High-Net-Worth). You need personal net assets above $5 million USD and must invest at least $2 million USD in Barbados from funds sourced outside the country, typically in property or qualifying local business ventures. Category 1 holders are automatically entitled to work permits, so local employment or running a business is on the table.4Invest Barbados. High Net Worth Individuals
Category 2 (Property Owner). If you own Barbadian property worth at least $300,000 USD but don’t meet the high-net-worth threshold, you can still qualify. Category 2 holders cannot work in Barbados at all. It’s built for retirees and people living on savings or foreign income.
Age matters. Applicants over 60 who meet the financial criteria can receive an indefinite permit. Those under 60 typically get a temporary SERP valid for up to three years and renewable.4Invest Barbados. High Net Worth Individuals
Permanent Residency Through Five Years of Residence
Standard permanent residency sits under Section 5 of the Immigration Act. You first need to be granted formal immigrant status by the Minister responsible for immigration under Section 6, and then live in Barbados continuously for at least five years as an approved immigrant.1Barbados Law Courts. Immigration CAP 190 The five-year clock does not start on your first day on a work permit. Time on different qualifying permits can be combined toward the total, so two years on a Welcome Stamp plus three years on a reside-and-work permit generally satisfies the requirement.
Marriage shortens the path. Under Section 5(2)(a)(ii), the spouse of a citizen by birth or descent can apply for permanent residence without hitting the five-year threshold, provided the marriage is legally recognized in Barbados.1Barbados Law Courts. Immigration CAP 190 Minor children of permanent residents or citizens also qualify.
Permanent residency lets you live and work in Barbados indefinitely. It is not citizenship. No Barbadian passport, no vote. You’ll also need to keep a clean legal record throughout the qualifying years, since character is reviewed at every stage.
Documents You Need
Missing paperwork stalls more applications than anything else. For permanent residency, the Immigration Department expects:
- A valid passport with at least six months of remaining validity, plus a copy of the bio-data page.
- Original birth certificates for every family member on the application.
- Marriage or divorce records where relevant.
- A police certificate of character from every country where you have lived for at least six months in the past three years.5Immigration Department. Permanent Resident Status
- A medical assessment on the department’s standard form for applicants 16 and older; children 16 and under need a general medical certificate of health from a doctor.5Immigration Department. Permanent Resident Status
- Four passport-sized photos, one of them certified by a Justice of the Peace or Notary Public.
- Detailed financial declarations, especially for SERP applications where investment thresholds need to be documented.
Foreign documents should be notarized or apostilled before submission, and apostille fees vary widely by country of origin, so plan for that expense early. The Welcome Stamp has lighter documentation because it runs online, but you still need passport photos, the bio-data page, and proof of relationship for any dependents.
Fees and Processing Times
Permanent residency carries an upfront application fee of BDS $300 (roughly $150 USD), with a final fee of BDS $1,200 (roughly $600 USD) due before your status is registered if you’re approved. Personal checks are not accepted.5Immigration Department. Permanent Resident Status Applications are normally submitted in person at the Immigration Department offices in Bridgetown.
Processing for permanent residency often runs several months. The department verifies background documentation, confirms financials, and in many cases schedules an interview. The Welcome Stamp is much faster because it’s an online review. SERP applications sit in between, driven mostly by how complex the financial documentation is.
From Permanent Residency to Citizenship
If citizenship is the goal, permanent residency is a step on the way, not the finish line. Under the Barbados Citizenship Act, naturalization requires 12 months of continuous residence immediately before you apply, plus at least five years of residence during the seven years before that 12-month period.6Refworld. Barbados Citizenship Act, Cap 186 The Minister must also be satisfied that you’re of good character and intend to keep living in Barbados.
Barbados recognizes dual citizenship, so you don’t have to surrender your existing passport to naturalize. The U.S. Embassy advises dual citizens to carry both valid passports when traveling between the two countries.7U.S. Embassy in Barbados, the Eastern Caribbean, and the OECS. Tax, Property, and School Boundaries Worth Knowing
Living in Barbados for more than 182 days during the income year generally makes you a tax resident, which brings worldwide income into scope at 12.5 percent on the first BDS $50,000 and 28.5 percent above that. The United States and Barbados have a tax treaty that helps prevent double taxation, though its saving clause keeps U.S. citizens on the hook for U.S. taxes on U.S.-source income.9Internal Revenue Service. United States Income Tax Treaties Most Welcome Stamp holders are not taxed by Barbados on their foreign remote earnings, but anyone planning a longer stay should get tax advice before committing.
Foreign nationals face no restrictions on buying property in Barbados and need no special license. If you buy, register incoming purchase funds with the Central Bank of Barbados through your Barbadian attorney at the time of the transaction; that registration is what protects your right to repatriate funds when you sell. Property worth at least $300,000 USD can also serve as the basis for a Category 2 SERP.
For families, children of CARICOM nationals residing in Barbados under approved immigration status attend public primary and secondary schools without tuition, though they pay the same ancillary fees as Barbadian students; the parent supplies the Ministry of Education with a letter from the Immigration Department confirming eligibility.10CARICOM. Barbados Will Grant Free Access to Public Schools for CARICOM Students Non-CARICOM residents should expect tuition at public schools or plan for private schooling. The tuition-free provision does not extend to post-secondary or vocational education for any group.
