To take money out of a Royal London pension, you complete the provider’s Income Release form, which you can access through the online customer service or request on paper by calling 0345 602 1885 (Monday to Friday, 8 am to 6 pm). The Royal London pension withdrawal form asks you to choose between tax-free cash only, flexi-access drawdown, a one-off income payment, or full encashment, then collects your bank details, tax code, and identity documents. Once Royal London has everything it needs, tax-free cash is usually paid within five working days.1Royal London. Pension Drawdown – Flexible Access
Check You’re Old Enough First
The normal minimum pension age in the UK is 55. You cannot withdraw from a Royal London pension before then unless you qualify for ill-health early retirement. From 6 April 2028, the minimum age rises to 57.2GOV.UK. Pensions Tax Manual – Member Benefits: Pensions: Protected Pension Age: Basic Principles Some workplace schemes set a higher retirement age, so check your scheme rules or annual statement if your pension came through an employer.
Taking money out before the minimum age is treated by HMRC as an unauthorised payment. The tax charge is 40 percent of the amount withdrawn, and if unauthorised payments in a single tax year reach 25 percent or more of your pot, a 15 percent surcharge brings the total to 55 percent.3GOV.UK. Decide Which Withdrawal Option You Want
Each option opens its own section on the Income Release form, so settle on one before you start.
- Tax-free lump sum (Pension Commencement Lump Sum). Up to 25 percent of your pot, taken as a standalone payment while the rest stays invested. The maximum tax-free amount across all your pensions is £268,275, known as the lump sum allowance.5GOV.UK. Tax on Your Private Pension Contributions
- Flexi-access drawdown. After taking some or all of your tax-free cash, you draw income from the remaining invested pot as regular payments or one-off withdrawals. Anything above the tax-free portion is taxed as income, and choosing drawdown triggers the money purchase annual allowance, which restricts future pension contributions.6Royal London. Retirement Options Income Drawdown Application Form
- Capped drawdown. If you entered drawdown before April 2015 you may still be on capped drawdown, which limits annual income to a percentage set by the Government Actuary’s Department. You can stay on it or convert to flexi-access by exceeding the cap.6Royal London. Retirement Options Income Drawdown Application Form
- One-off income payment. A single taxable withdrawal without closing the plan. Useful when you need a set amount but want the rest invested.
- Full encashment. You cash in the whole pot as a single payment. The first 25 percent is tax-free, the remaining 75 percent is added to your taxable income for the year, and the money purchase annual allowance is triggered. Once paid, it cannot be reversed.6Royal London. Retirement Options Income Drawdown Application Form
Royal London recommends speaking to a financial adviser before any withdrawal. If you don’t have one, the government’s Pension Wise service (via MoneyHelper) offers free guidance.1Royal London. Pension Drawdown – Flexible Access
What to Have Ready Before You Open the Form
Missing any one of these can stall the application.
- Your policy number. It appears in the top-right corner of your annual benefit statement and on any letters from Royal London.
- Your National Insurance number. Royal London uses it to report payments to HMRC and verify your identity.7Royal London. How to Find a Lost or Old Pension
- Bank details for a UK account in your name. The sort code and account number are both validated before funds are released.
- Your current tax code, from the most recent PAYE coding notice. Without an up-to-date code, Royal London applies an emergency code and you will almost certainly overpay tax initially.
- Identity documents. A copy of your current passport (both pages visible when open) and a bank statement from the last three months for the receiving account.
Getting the Form
The quickest route is online. Customers of Royal London, Scottish Life, and several legacy brands (including National and Provincial Policy, Refuge Assurance, and Friends Provident) can log in and access the Income Release form digitally.8Royal London. Customer Login and Registration Some older plans — including certain Abbey National and Co-operative Insurance Society products — aren’t available on the online service. For those, call 0345 602 1885 and ask for a paper form pack to be posted to your registered address.9Royal London. Contact Us
Filling the Form In
The Income Release form steps you through the withdrawal. The sections that need the most attention are:
- Personal details and policy number. Your name, address, date of birth, NI number, and the policy you’re drawing from.
- Withdrawal type. Tick the option you decided on earlier. Each choice opens its own follow-up questions.
- Payment frequency, for drawdown. Specify monthly payments, a one-off withdrawal, or both, and the amount. On capped drawdown, you can set the amount as a percentage of the maximum allowed under the Government Actuary’s Department limits.
- Bank details. The account must be in your name, and the name must exactly match Royal London’s records.
- Declaration. You sign to confirm you understand the tax consequences and, for full encashment, that the decision is permanent.
Check the withdrawal type field twice. Ticking full encashment when you meant a one-off payment produces irreversible consequences once the payment is processed.
Submitting the Form and Passing Identity Checks
Online submissions go through Royal London’s secure portal. Paper forms are posted back to Royal London; the exact address appears on the form pack itself or on your most recent correspondence. Royal London’s office is in Wilmslow, Cheshire.
After submission, Royal London runs identity verification under anti-money laundering rules.10GOV.UK. Your Responsibilities Under Money Laundering Supervision UK customers are usually checked electronically. If the check doesn’t clear, which is common after a recent house move, you’ll be asked to supply a passport copy and a bank statement from the last three months.
If You Live Outside the UK
Overseas policyholders must supply certified photocopies of two identity documents from Royal London’s approved list: a current passport, a photocard driving licence, a national identity card, a recent utility bill (not a mobile phone bill), or a bank or building society statement issued within the last three months.11Royal London. Proof of Identity for Overseas Clients
The copies must be certified by a person in a position of responsibility, such as a doctor, solicitor, bank official, employer, teacher, police officer, or minister of religion. The certifier signs and dates the copy, states their profession and business address or phone number, and writes that they have seen the original. They cannot be related to you, live at the same address, or be named on your application.11Royal London. Proof of Identity for Overseas Clients
If you upload documents instead of posting them, make sure all four edges of each page are visible in the image, the picture isn’t a phone screenshot, and passport photos show the full open book across both pages.
How Long It Takes
Royal London aims to pay tax-free cash within five working days of receiving everything it needs.1Royal London. Pension Drawdown – Flexible Access Drawdown payments and full encashments can take longer, especially if identity verification needs manual review or investments have to be sold first. Payment is made electronically into the bank account on the form.
The common delays are mismatched bank details, failed electronic identity checks that then need manual document review, and missing or illegible paperwork. Getting everything right first time is the single biggest factor in how fast you’re paid.
Tax on Your Withdrawal
The first 25 percent of your pot (up to the £268,275 lump sum allowance across all your pensions) is tax-free.5GOV.UK. Tax on Your Private Pension Contributions Anything above that is taxed as earned income at your marginal rate.
If Royal London doesn’t hold a current tax code for you, it applies an emergency code. Under that code, the provider treats your withdrawal as if you’ll receive the same amount every month for the rest of the tax year, then applies one-twelfth of the personal allowance (£12,570 divided by 12) and taxes the rest against one-twelfth of each income tax band.12Royal London. Emergency Tax on Pensions On a large one-off withdrawal, that calculation vastly overstates your annual income and you pay far more tax than you owe.
Reclaiming Overpaid Tax
You don’t have to wait until the end of the tax year. HMRC offers three reclaim forms depending on your situation:
- Form P55 if you took a flexible payment, didn’t empty the pot, and won’t take further payments before the end of the tax year.
- Form P53Z if you withdrew the entire pot.
- Form P50Z if you withdrew the entire pot and have also stopped working.
Submit any of these online through your HMRC login or print and post them. HMRC pays refunds via Faster Payments into a bank account in your name.13GOV.UK. Claim Back Tax on a Flexibly Accessed Pension Overpayment (P55) The simplest way to avoid the problem is to call HMRC before your withdrawal and ask them to issue an updated tax code directly to Royal London.
If You’re a US Citizen or Resident
The Royal London withdrawal process is the same, but your reporting obligations are not. Both the UK and the US claim the right to tax pension distributions, and you’ll normally claim a foreign tax credit on your US return for UK tax already paid.14GOV.UK. INTM163160 – Pensions – Lump Sums A Royal London pension can also trigger an FBAR filing (FinCEN Form 114) if your foreign financial accounts exceed $10,000 at any point in the year, and a Form 8938 filing if your specified foreign assets exceed $50,000 at year end or $75,000 at any point (higher thresholds for joint filers).15Internal Revenue Service. Comparison of Form 8938 and FBAR Requirements Form 3520 may also apply, though Revenue Procedure 2020-17 exempts many qualifying foreign retirement trusts.16Internal Revenue Service.
