To fill out a Walmart money order, use a pen with blue or black ink at the counter and complete five fields on the MoneyGram form the clerk hands you: the payee’s full legal name on the “Pay to the Order Of” line, your name on the purchaser line, your current address, an optional memo, and your signature on the front. Do it before you leave the store. A blank money order is as good as cash to anyone who finds it.
What Goes on Each Line
Walmart sells MoneyGram money orders with a maximum face value of $1,000 each.1Walmart. Money Orders Once you’ve paid and the clerk prints the money order, these are the fields you fill in:
- Pay to the Order Of. Print the full legal name of the person or business receiving the payment, exactly as it appears on their ID or official business records. Avoid nicknames and initials. Spelling matters here because the recipient’s bank will compare this line to their identification, and a mismatch can block them from cashing it.
- Purchaser or From. Print your own full legal name. Some MoneyGram forms combine this with the address field; others separate them.
- Address. Write your current mailing address. This identifies you as the buyer and gives the recipient a way to reach you if there is a problem with the payment.
- Memo or Payment For. This line is optional. Use it to note what the payment covers, such as an account number, an invoice number, or “March rent.” The payee line is what controls legally, but the memo helps both sides match the payment to the right obligation.
- Purchaser’s Signature. Sign the front of the money order on the line marked for the purchaser.
Fill the money order out immediately at the counter rather than at home or in the car. If it gets lost between the register and your mailbox and the payee line is still blank, whoever picks it up can write their own name there.
Sign the Front, Never the Back
One of the most common mistakes is signing the wrong line. The front has a line for the purchaser’s signature. The back has an endorsement area reserved for the recipient, who signs it when they cash or deposit the money order. If you sign the back yourself as the buyer, the bank may read the money order as already endorsed and refuse to process it. As the purchaser, you sign only the front.
If You Make a Mistake
Do not cross out, write over, or use correction fluid on a money order. Any visible alteration raises a fraud flag, and most banks and check-cashing locations will refuse a document that looks tampered with. Even adding a missing letter to the payee’s name can trigger a rejection.
If you catch the error before leaving the store, ask the clerk whether they can process a same-day cancellation and reissue; policies on this can vary by location. Otherwise, Walmart allows in-store money order refunds starting 10 days after the original purchase date, provided the money order is not damaged or altered and you have your receipt and valid ID.1Walmart. Money Orders Hold onto both the flawed money order and your receipt, because you need both to get your money back.
Keep the Receipt Stub
When the transaction is finished, the clerk hands you the money order along with a detachable receipt stub. That stub is your proof of purchase and the only practical way to trace the payment later. It carries the money order’s serial number and face value, which are the two pieces of information you need to check whether it has been cashed. MoneyGram offers an online status tool where you enter the serial number and amount to see whether the instrument is still outstanding or has been processed.2MoneyGram. Store the stub somewhere safe. Without that serial number, replacing a lost or stolen money order becomes significantly harder.
Payment, ID, and Limits
A few things shape what you can and cannot do at the counter, and they are worth knowing before you fill anything out:
- Walmart accepts cash and PIN-based debit cards for money order purchases. Credit cards are not accepted.1Walmart. Money Orders
- Each money order is capped at $1,000 face value. For a larger payment, you buy multiple money orders, each with its own fee of up to $1.1Walmart. Money Orders
- A valid government-issued photo ID is required whenever your total purchase reaches $1,000 or more. A clerk may ask for ID below that threshold as well.1Walmart. Money Orders
- If your cash purchases of money orders total $3,000 or more in a single day, the retailer must record your name, address, and identification details under federal Bank Secrecy Act rules. That recordkeeping requirement applies across the $3,000–$10,000 range for cash transactions.3Financial Crimes Enforcement Network. A Quick Reference Guide for Money Services Businesses4FFIEC. Have the exact amount ready, know the recipient’s full legal name before you walk up, and bring ID even for smaller purchases. That way the only thing left to do at the counter is fill in the lines and sign the front.
