If you don’t already have an account, you’ll create one through either Login.gov or ID.me. As of June 2025, those are the only two sign-in options; SSA retired its old username-and-password system entirely.2Social Security Administration. Either provider will walk you through email confirmation, two-step authentication, and identity verification.
One rule to know before you set anything up: your my Social Security account is for your exclusive use. No one else may create one on your behalf or sign in for you, even with written permission. Request It By Mail
Send a written request to your local Social Security office. Include your full name, Social Security number, date of birth, current mailing address, and a plain statement that you’re requesting a benefit verification letter.5Social Security Administration. How Can I Get a Benefit Verification Letter? Delivery runs on the same 10-business-day timeline as a phone request.
Request It In Person
You can visit a local office, but book an appointment first. Walk-ins are no longer accepted for most services.6Social Security Administration. Make or Change an Appointment Bring a government-issued photo ID. If your address on file is outdated, an in-person visit is a good chance to update it at the same time.
Update Your Address Before You Request
Phone and mail requests go to whatever mailing address SSA has on file. If you’ve moved and haven’t told them, the letter follows you to your old address. Update it online through my Social Security if you’re already receiving benefits, or by calling 1-800-772-1213 and telling the representative you need to update your contact information.7Social Security Administration. Requesting a Letter for Someone You Represent
If you are a representative payee for a child, spouse, or incapacitated adult, sign in to your own my Social Security account and select “Representative Payee Services.” From there you can view, print, or save the beneficiary’s letter immediately.8Social Security Administration. Authorizing a Third Party With Form SSA-3288
If you’d rather have SSA release your benefit information directly to a lender, insurer, attorney, or other outside party, use Form SSA-3288 (Consent for Release of Information). The form asks for your name, Social Security number, date of birth, the name and address of the recipient, and a specific description of what you want released. Blanket requests for “any and all records” won’t be honored; identify the specific information, such as benefit amounts for a particular date range.9Social Security Administration. Your consent is valid for one year from the date you sign it, or 90 days if the release involves medical records. Unless you say otherwise on the form, it authorizes a one-time release. What the Letter Will Show
The letter lists your name, mailing address, and a partially masked Social Security number. It identifies the benefit type, whether that’s retirement, disability, survivor benefits, or Supplemental Security Income. On the money side, it shows your gross monthly benefit before deductions, any deductions taken out such as Medicare premiums, and the net amount deposited to your account. Medicare coverage appears when it applies. The content is personalized: someone who has never received benefits gets a letter confirming that, and someone with a pending application sees a confirmation that the application was filed.1Social Security Administration. Get Benefit Verification Letter
Because the letter prints with the date it was issued, and some institutions reject one that is more than a few months old, download or request a fresh copy close to the date you’ll hand it in.
If You Need the Letter for Use Abroad
Countries in the 1961 Hague Convention require an apostille on foreign documents. Because the benefit verification letter is a federal document, the apostille comes from the U.S. Department of State’s Office of Protocol, not from a state secretary of state. Do not have the letter notarized before submitting it for the apostille; the State Department warns that notarizing a federal document can make it invalid for that purpose.11U.S. Department of State. The Letter Is Free
You should never pay anyone to get this letter for you. Federal law prohibits charging a fee to help you obtain a product or service known to be available from SSA at no cost, unless the seller prominently discloses that the service is free from Social Security directly.12Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 42 U.S. Code 1320b-10 – Prohibitions Relating to References to Social Security or Medicare Sites offering to obtain your benefit letter for a fee are either scams or paid gateways to something you can do yourself in minutes.
