How to Get a Norwegian Passport: Requirements, Fees, and Renewal

To get a Norwegian passport, you book an in-person appointment with the police in Norway or a Norwegian embassy or consulate abroad, bring your existing passport and any required documents, have your photo and fingerprints taken on the spot, and pay the fee. An adult passport costs 1,290 NOK (roughly $129 USD) and is valid for ten years; children’s passports cost 770 NOK and are valid for shorter periods depending on the child’s age.1Norway in the United States. Who Can Apply

Only Norwegian citizens can hold a Norwegian passport. If you’re unsure whether you qualify, particularly if you were born abroad or before 1979, the Norwegian Directorate of Immigration (UDI) can confirm your status.2Norwegian Directorate of Immigration. Am I a Norwegian Citizen

Since January 1, 2020, Norway has allowed dual citizenship. If you previously lost your Norwegian citizenship by acquiring another nationality, you can reclaim it by filing a notification with UDI before applying for a passport. The National Population Register must first reflect that you acquired the other nationality.3Norwegian Directorate of Immigration. Dual Citizenship

Update Your Population Registry First

Your information in the Norwegian Population Registry (Folkeregisteret) must be correct before a passport can be issued, including your name and registered place of birth.4Norway.no. Passport Application Checklist If you’ve changed your name through marriage, divorce, or a legal name change, update it through Skatteetaten before booking your appointment. Outdated registry information is one of the most common reasons applicants get turned away.

You also need a Norwegian national identity number (personnummer). If you don’t have one, the passport authority will ask the National Population Register to assign one before your passport is issued.5Skatteetaten. Book the Appointment

You cannot walk in. Appointments in Norway are booked through the police’s website, where you search by postal code or location for your nearest passport office.6Politiet.no. Applying for a Norwegian Passport Embassies and consulates tend to have fewer slots and longer wait times than police stations in Norway, so book early.

What to Bring

Adults

Bring your most recent Norwegian passport, even if it expired years ago. If it’s lost or you never had one, bring another valid form of identification. When applying outside Norway, you also need proof that you’re legally present in that country, such as a permanent residency card, visa, or local passport. If you recently reclaimed Norwegian citizenship through UDI, bring the decision letter.1Norway in the United States. Passports and Consular Services

Children Under 18

A child cannot get a passport without the consent of everyone who holds parental responsibility. When parents share parental responsibility, both must consent. At least one parent must accompany the child to the appointment and bring valid passports for both parents along with the child’s existing passport.8Norway.no. Passport Application for Minors Plus Consent If only one parent attends, the absent parent’s signature on the consent form must be notarized. At an embassy, both parents can give consent separately on different days; the child only needs to be present for the passport appointment itself.1Norway in the United States. For a child born abroad who has never held a Norwegian passport, the child must be a Norwegian citizen and have a Norwegian national identity number, which can be applied for as part of the passport process.1Norway in the United States. Passports and Consular Services

At the Appointment

Don’t bring a photograph. Police or consular staff will photograph you and take your fingerprints during the appointment, and the same goes for children.9Norwegian Directorate of Immigration. Photo/Passport Photo Payment is made at the appointment by debit or credit card; most offices do not accept cash.1Norway in the United States. Passports and Consular Services

Processing typically takes two to three weeks once the passport enters production. If you apply abroad, the passport is produced in Norway and shipped to the embassy or consulate. Contact the office where you had your appointment about shipping arrangements if you need it sent to your address.1Norway in the United States. Passports and Consular Services

Fees

Fees are set nationally and apply whether you apply in Norway or abroad. Figures are current as of 2025.1Norway in the United States. Passports and Consular Services

  • Adults (16 and older): 1,290 NOK (approximately $129 USD)
  • Children (under 16): 770 NOK (approximately $77 USD)
  • Emergency passport: 1,690 NOK

Validity Periods

How long your passport lasts depends on your age when it is issued:1Norway in the United States. Passports and Consular Services

  • 16 and older: 10 years
  • 10 to 15: 5 years
  • 5 to 9: 3 years
  • Under 5: 2 years

The shorter periods for young children reflect how quickly their appearance changes. Watch this when planning trips; a toddler’s passport can expire sooner than you’d expect.

Renewal

Renewing follows the same procedure as a first application. Book an appointment, appear in person for new biometrics, bring your expiring or expired passport, and pay the fee. There is no separate renewal form and no renewal by mail.

Many countries require your passport to have at least six months of remaining validity for entry, so don’t wait until the expiration date, especially if you’re applying from abroad where slots can fill weeks in advance.

Lost, Stolen, or Emergency Passports

Report a lost or stolen passport to local police in the country where the loss occurred. The loss is entered into an internationally searchable database and the passport is permanently invalidated. If it later turns up, you must hand it over to the police; it can no longer be used for travel.10Norway.no. Notification of Loss of Passport

If you need to travel before a replacement can be produced, you can apply for an emergency passport (nødpass) at a Norwegian embassy or consulate. It costs 1,690 NOK and is valid only for a single return journey. When an emergency passport is issued, any regular passport you still hold is invalidated, so don’t request one casually as a backup.
