Getting a loan with a 500 credit score is possible, but your choices are narrow and every one costs more than it would at a higher score. The realistic options are federal credit union payday alternative loans capped at 28%, secured loans backed by a vehicle title or savings account, co-signed loans that lean on someone else’s credit, FHA-insured mortgages that accept scores as low as 500 with 10% down, loans from your own 401(k) if your plan allows them, and online subprime installment lenders whose APRs commonly land between 32% and 36%. Which one fits depends on what you own, who will vouch for you, and how urgently you need the money.
Credit Union Payday Alternative Loans
Federal credit unions offer small-dollar loans built specifically to replace payday lending, and they are the cheapest option most 500-score borrowers can realistically reach. The National Credit Union Administration regulates two versions, PALs I and PALs II. Both cap the interest rate at 28% and limit the application fee to $20. 1eCFR. 12 CFR 701.21 – Loans to Members and Lines of Credit to Members The 28% ceiling comes from the NCUA’s temporary 18% interest rate ceiling plus the 10 percentage points the regulation allows on top for payday alternative products. 2National Credit Union Administration. Permissible Loan Interest Rate Ceiling Extended
The two programs differ mainly on timing and loan size. PALs I require you to have been a credit union member for at least one month before applying and cap loans between $200 and $1,000. PALs II dropped the waiting period, so you can join and apply the same day, and the ceiling rises to $2,000. Both are repaid in one to six months through regular installments, and credit unions are not allowed to roll the loan over, which is the mechanic that makes storefront payday loans so punishing.
You have to be a member of a federal credit union to borrow, and not every credit union offers PALs. Membership eligibility varies: some serve a particular employer or geographic area, others open their doors to anyone willing to join an affiliated organization. The search is worth the time. At 28%, a PAL costs roughly half what you would pay an online subprime lender for a similar amount.
Secured Personal Loans
A secured loan uses something you already own to guarantee the debt, and the collateral is what unlocks approval at a 500 score. The two common forms are vehicle title loans and savings-secured loans.
With a title loan, your car backs the debt and the lender places a lien on it. Miss enough payments and the lender can repossess the vehicle. Loan amounts are typically capped at a percentage of the car’s fair market value, and you will hand over the title, registration, and vehicle identification number as part of the application. Most states charge a government fee to record the lien, and that fee is usually passed along to you in closing costs.
A savings-secured loan works differently. You pledge a bank account balance that you cannot withdraw until the debt is repaid, and the lender draws from that account if you default. Rates run lower than unsecured loans at the same credit level because the lender’s downside is covered, and some lenders report payments to the credit bureaus, so repaying on time can lift your score. The obvious catch is that your cash is frozen for the life of the loan, which defeats the purpose if the reason you are borrowing is that you have no cash.
Co-Signed Loans
Bringing in a co-signer with stronger credit is another way to reach better terms without rebuilding your score first. The lender evaluates the co-signer’s credit and income alongside yours, and because the co-signer is legally on the hook for the full balance if you stop paying, the lender’s risk drops. That usually means a lower rate and a better chance of approval than you could get on your own.
The arrangement works, but the consequences for the other person are real. Every missed payment lands on the co-signer’s credit report. A default lets the lender pursue the co-signer for the entire balance, including through collections and potentially wage garnishment. Before you ask, be honest with yourself about whether you can make every payment on time, and make sure the co-signer understands this is not a formality. They are taking on genuine financial liability.
FHA Home Loans
If you need a mortgage specifically, the Federal Housing Administration is one of the few programs that will look at a 500 score. FHA does not lend directly; it insures loans made by approved lenders, and that insurance is what lets the lender say yes to a weaker credit profile. The threshold works on a sliding scale. Borrowers with scores between 500 and 579 must put at least 10% down. Scores of 580 and above qualify for the standard 3.5% minimum. Below 500, FHA does not help.
The 10% down payment is the real barrier at a 500 score. On a $250,000 home, that is $25,000 upfront instead of the $8,750 a 580-score borrower would need. Many lenders also set their own minimum scores above the FHA floor, so finding one willing to go all the way down to 500 takes extra shopping. Manual underwriting, where a human reviews the file rather than running it through automated software, is common at this level and slows the process. FHA loans also require mortgage insurance premiums, both upfront and monthly, with the monthly premium lasting the life of the loan when you put down less than 10%.
Borrowing From Your 401(k)
If your workplace retirement plan permits loans, borrowing from your own 401(k) sidesteps the credit check entirely. Your score does not matter because you are borrowing your own money; the plan is the lender and your vested balance is the collateral. Federal rules let you borrow up to 50% of your vested account balance, with a maximum of $50,000. 3Internal Revenue Service. 401(k) Resource Guide – Plan Participants – General Distribution Rules Repayment runs through payroll deductions, usually within five years, and the interest rate is typically set at the prime rate plus one or two percentage points. That interest goes back into your own retirement account.
The risk most people underestimate is job loss. If you leave or are laid off, many plans require full repayment within a few months. If you cannot cover the remaining balance, it is treated as a distribution, meaning income taxes on the amount plus a 10% early withdrawal penalty if you are under 59½. You also lose whatever long-term investment growth that money would have earned. A 401(k) loan can work as a short bridge when your job is stable; it can hurt badly when it is not.
Online Subprime Installment Lenders
A growing number of online lenders specialize in borrowers that banks reject. They look at factors beyond your credit score, including income stability, employment history, banking activity, and debt-to-income ratio. 4Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. Subprime Lending Risk Management Manual Examination Policies Some also pull alternative data like rent and utility history.
You pay for the access. Rates for 500-score borrowers commonly fall between 32% and 36%, and some lenders go higher. On a $5,000 loan at 36% APR over three years, you would pay roughly $2,900 in interest, bringing total repayment close to $7,900. Federal law requires every lender to disclose the APR and the total cost of the loan in writing before you sign. 5Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. 12 CFR Part 1026 (Regulation Z) – 1026.17 General Disclosure Requirements Read those numbers carefully. The gap between a 28% credit union loan and a 36% online loan is enormous over the repayment period.
Repayment is structured as fixed monthly installments over several months to a few years, which is safer than lump-sum structures where a single missed deadline triggers rollovers and penalties. Look for lenders that report payments to at least one of the three major credit bureaus. On-time payments then pay down the debt and rebuild your score at the same time.
What You Will Need to Apply
Whichever loan type you pursue, lenders need to confirm you can repay. The core documents are similar across the board.
- Recent pay stubs covering the last 30 to 60 days if you are employed. Self-employed borrowers submit tax returns and profit-and-loss statements. Contractors and freelancers may need 1099-NEC forms from the previous tax year.
- A government-issued photo ID such as a driver’s license or passport, plus your Social Security number, for identity checks and the credit pull.6Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. FFIEC BSA/AML Examination Manual – Customer Identification Program
- A recent utility bill, lease agreement, or bank statement showing your current address.
- Routing and account numbers for the account where funds will be deposited and from which payments will be drafted.
Secured loans add a layer. Vehicle title loans require the title, current registration, and vehicle identification number. Savings-secured loans require recent statements showing the balance you are pledging. The lender needs to confirm you own the asset and determine what it is worth.
One mistake that sinks applications at this credit level more than any other: reporting net take-home pay instead of gross monthly income. Lenders calculate debt-to-income ratio using gross income, the amount before taxes and deductions. Putting net pay on the application makes your ratio look worse than it really is and can produce a denial your gross income would have avoided.
Alternative Credit Data
Some subprime lenders and credit unions now look past the traditional credit report. Rent payments, utility bills, and bank account activity can all serve as evidence that you handle recurring obligations reliably, even when your score does not reflect it. This tends to help borrowers whose low score comes from a thin file rather than a long history of missed payments. If a lender advertises that they consider alternative data, bring documentation of consistent rent or utility payments to the application.
How the Application and Funding Process Works
Most subprime lenders accept applications online. You fill in income and employment details, consent to a credit check, and upload documents. Credit unions often want you in a branch with a loan officer. Either way, expect a verification step where the lender confirms your employment, usually by calling your employer or requesting additional paperwork.
One distinction matters when your score is already low. Many online lenders start with a soft credit inquiry during prequalification, which does not affect your score. A hard inquiry, which can temporarily knock your score down by up to five points, only happens after you formally accept an offer and move to the full application. 7U.S. Small Business Administration. Credit Inquiries: What You Should Know About Hard and Soft Pulls At 500, even a small dip matters, so use prequalification tools to compare offers before you consent to a hard pull.
If approved, the lender sends a loan agreement for electronic signature. Federal law gives electronic signatures the same legal weight as ink on paper. 8Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC Ch. 96 – Electronic Signatures in Global and National Commerce Read the whole agreement. Look at the APR, the total repayment amount, the monthly payment, any origination fees, and whether there is a prepayment penalty. Once you sign, funds typically land in your bank account through an ACH transfer within one to three business days. 9Nacha. ACH Payments Fact Sheet Some lenders also offer prepaid debit cards or paper checks for borrowers without a bank account.
How to Spot Predatory Lenders
Borrowers at the 500 score level are prime targets for predatory lending, and the warning signs are not always obvious. Legitimate subprime lenders charge high rates. Predatory ones disguise additional costs so the loan is even more expensive than it appears.
- Junk fees buried in fine print. Charges labeled “processing fee,” “expedite fee,” or even “voluntary tip” may not show up in the advertised APR, and the actual cost of the loan can be many times the stated interest rate once they are counted in.
- Mandatory add-on products. Credit insurance, debt protection plans, and similar add-ons primarily benefit the lender and inflate your cost. If a lender requires insurance as a condition of the loan, treat that as a red flag.
- Balloon payments. Small monthly payments followed by one large lump sum at the end are designed to look affordable until the balloon comes due. Federal disclosure rules require lenders to identify balloon payments clearly and state the maximum amount owed. If the lender glosses over this or makes it hard to find, walk away.10eCFR. 12 CFR 1026.37 – Content of Disclosures for Certain Mortgage Transactions (Loan Estimate)
- “No credit check” advertised as a benefit. A lender that does not check your credit at all is not doing you a favor. It usually means the terms are so unfavorable that the lender profits regardless of whether you repay in full.
Active-duty service members and their dependents have an extra layer of protection. The Military Lending Act caps the rate on most consumer credit products at 36% when the total cost of credit is calculated, including fees, insurance premiums, and add-on charges that civilian borrowers might not notice. If you are covered and a lender offers you terms that exceed 36% all-in, the contract is void.
What Happens If You Default
Missing payments on a subprime loan escalates fast. Late fees come first, typically 4% to 5% of the missed payment, varying by lender and state. After 30 days past due, the lender reports the delinquency to the credit bureaus, and your already-fragile score drops further. After 90 to 180 days without payment, most lenders charge off the debt and either collect it internally or sell it to a third-party collector.
Secured loans raise the stakes. The lender can repossess your vehicle or liquidate the savings account you pledged as collateral. This typically happens after several missed payments, with the exact timeline set by your loan agreement and state law.
If a debt reaches collections, the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act limits how aggressively a collector can pursue you. Among other restrictions, collectors cannot threaten arrest for unpaid consumer debt unless jail is actually a lawful consequence of that specific debt, which for ordinary personal loans it is not. 11Federal Trade Commission. Fair Debt Collection Practices Act Text Wage garnishment is the enforcement tool with the sharpest teeth. If a creditor obtains a court judgment, federal law caps garnishment at the lesser of 25% of your disposable earnings or the amount by which weekly disposable earnings exceed 30 times the federal minimum wage. 12Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1673 – Restriction on Garnishment Some states cap it tighter. Either way, garnishment means a smaller paycheck every pay period until the judgment is satisfied, which can take years.
Lifting Your Score Above 500 Before You Borrow
Every option above gets cheaper or more accessible as your score climbs. Moving from 500 to 580 alone opens the 3.5% FHA down payment. Crossing into the low 600s unlocks conventional lenders with meaningfully lower rates. If your need is not urgent, six months of score work can save you more than any amount of rate shopping.
The fastest tool for most people in this range is a secured credit card. You deposit cash, usually matching the credit limit dollar-for-dollar, and the card reports to the major bureaus like any other credit card. Using it for small recurring purchases and paying the balance in full each month builds positive payment history, which is the largest single factor in your score. Most borrowers see measurable improvement within six months.
Pull your credit reports from all three bureaus and check for errors. Inaccurate late payments, accounts that are not yours, and debts listed as open after they have been paid can all drag your score down artificially. Disputing and correcting these errors costs nothing and often produces point gains faster than any other strategy. If high credit utilization is part of the problem, paying revolving balances below 30% of your limits moves the needle quickly too. None of this is glamorous, but at a 500 score, small improvements have outsized effects on what any lender will offer you.
