The fastest way to get a copy of your W-2G is to contact the casino, racetrack, or lottery commission that paid the winnings and ask for a duplicate. If the payer is slow, unresponsive, or out of business, the IRS has the same data on file and will release it to you through a Wage and Income transcript. Either route gets you what you need to file.
Gather a Few Details First
Before you call anyone, pull together enough information for staff to find your specific transaction. The approximate date of the win, the venue, and a rough jackpot amount are the essentials. Gaming facilities process these requests routinely, but a busy property runs thousands of payouts a day and needs something to search on.
Have your Social Security number ready, along with any rewards-club or player’s-card number tied to the venue. The payer recorded at least two forms of identification when they issued the original W-2G, so matching your SSN to their file is the quickest identity check.1Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Forms W-2G and 5754 (Rev. January 2026) If the date is fuzzy, look at bank or card statements for ATM withdrawals or charges at the property. Player’s-club history reports, available at most rewards desks, can narrow a winning session down to the machine.
Ask the Payer for a Duplicate
The payer that issued the original form has to keep records of it, which makes them your first stop. Call the casino cage, the customer service line, or the corporate tax office and ask about their process for reissuing tax documents. Larger gaming companies often route these through a dedicated department; on the phone tree, listen for options like “tax documents” or “finance.”
Many venues will not release a duplicate over the phone. You may have to complete a document-release form on-site or mail a signed request to their corporate office. Turnaround is usually two to four weeks, and some properties charge a small fee for pulling older records. This route remains the most common way to get an actual copy of the form with every box filled in as it originally appeared.
Check Whether You Opted Into Electronic Delivery
Some payers now furnish W-2G forms electronically instead of by mail. A payer cannot switch you to electronic-only delivery without your written consent, and they must tell you how to withdraw that consent, how to request a paper copy later, and what hardware or software you need to view the document.2Internal Revenue Service. Requirements for Furnishing Form 1099-G Electronically If you agreed to electronic delivery at some point and forgot, the form may already be sitting in your email or your player-portal inbox rather than lost in the mail.
Look in the Casino’s Player Portal
If the venue has a rewards program, log into its online portal or mobile app and check for a tax-documents section. Many casinos post downloadable PDFs of every W-2G they issued under your account, covering the current year and several prior years. Sign in with your rewards-account credentials and look for a tab labeled “tax documents” or “win/loss statements.” You can usually pull the file instantly and drop it into tax software without waiting on the mail.
Portal access typically requires your rewards number and the SSN on file. If your contact information is outdated, most casinos require an in-person visit to a rewards desk with valid ID before they’ll let you update it. That’s a security step, not a bug, so plan for it if you’ve moved or changed your email since your last trip.
Pull the Data From the IRS
When the payer won’t respond, has gone out of business, or simply can’t produce the form in time, the IRS has the same information. Every payer that issues a W-2G also files it with the agency, so your reported gambling income and any federal tax withheld sit in your IRS wage and income record.
Online
The quickest path is your IRS Individual Online Account. Start at the “Get Your Tax Records” page and sign in.3Internal Revenue Service. Get Your Tax Records and Transcripts Identity verification runs through ID.me, which asks for a government-issued photo ID and a selfie check. Once you’re through, request a Wage and Income transcript for the year you need. This transcript shows the data from every information return filed under your SSN, including W-2G forms.4Internal Revenue Service. Transcript Types for Individuals and Ways to Order Them
A Wage and Income transcript is not a photocopy of the original form. It’s a plain-text summary of the fields the payer reported. That’s usually enough to file an accurate return, though it may not show every detail the paper form contained. Transcripts also lag: the IRS generally won’t have the current year’s information returns loaded until several weeks after the January 31 filing deadline for payers.
By Mail
If you can’t clear the online identity check, request the same transcript by mailing Form 4506-T. The form is free, and the correct address depends on the state where you filed your most recent return.5Internal Revenue Service. Where to File Addresses for Filing Form 4506-T Mail is considerably slower than the online route. If your filing deadline is close, consider filing Form 4868 for an extension while you wait.
Filing Without the Physical Form
You owe tax on gambling winnings whether or not the W-2G is in your hand. All gambling winnings must be reported on Schedule 1 of Form 1040, including winnings that never generated a W-2G in the first place.6Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 419, Gambling Income and Losses Waiting on a replacement is not a reason to leave the income off your return.
If you have your own records of the amount won and any tax withheld, use them. A cashier receipt, a screenshot from the player portal, a bank deposit record, or the figures from your IRS Wage and Income transcript will all work. Report the winnings as “Other income” on Schedule 1, and claim any federal withholding shown in Box 4 of the W-2G (or on your transcript) on your Form 1040 to get credit for tax already paid.7Internal Revenue Service. Form W-2G Certain Gambling Winnings (Rev. January 2026)
One boundary worth knowing: Form 4852, the substitute used for a missing W-2 from an employer, does not apply to gambling winnings. There is no official IRS substitute form for a lost W-2G. Your transcript data or personal records are the backup.
When the Payer Was Supposed to Send It
Payers must furnish your copy of Form W-2G by January 31 following the calendar year of the win.1Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Forms W-2G and 5754 (Rev. January 2026) For 2026 winnings, that deadline is January 31, 2027. If February arrives with nothing in the mail, don’t wait until April. Call the payer, check the player portal, and start the IRS transcript request as a parallel track. Running all three at once gives you the best odds of having complete records before your own filing deadline.
