Do You Need a Transcript or a Full Copy?

Most people asking for old tax records need a transcript, not a photocopy. Mortgage lenders, financial aid offices, and state revenue departments routinely accept transcripts as proof of income and filing status.3Internal Revenue Service. A full copy is a reproduction of the exact return you submitted, with every schedule and attachment. You would ask for one when a transcript isn’t enough, for example when you have lost your records and need to prepare an amended return, or when resolving certain legal or tax disputes.2Internal Revenue Service. Which Transcript Matches Your Purpose

The IRS produces five separate transcript types, each built around a different question.3Internal Revenue Service. Transcript Types for Individuals and Ways to Order Them

  • The tax return transcript shows most line items from your Form 1040 as originally filed. This is what mortgage lenders typically ask for. It does not include changes made after filing.
  • The tax account transcript shows filing status, taxable income, and payment types, plus any changes made after filing, such as audit adjustments or amended return updates.
  • The record of account transcript combines the two above into a single document.
  • The wage and income transcript shows data from W-2s, 1099s, 1098s, and other information returns the IRS received on your behalf. Useful for reconstructing a return you no longer have.
  • The verification of non-filing letter confirms the IRS has no record of a return for a given year. Financial aid offices often request this for students or parents who weren’t required to file.
