How to Get a Copy of Your 1099: Payer, IRS Transcript, or Mail

To get a copy of your 1099, ask the payer who issued it for a duplicate, download it from the payer’s online tax documents portal, or pull a Wage and Income Transcript from the IRS. Which route is fastest depends on whether the payer is still reachable and how close you are to your filing deadline. Most 1099s are supposed to reach you by January 31 after the tax year ends, with 1099-B and 1099-S following a February 15 deadline.1Internal Revenue Service. General Instructions for Certain Information Returns (2026) If those dates have passed and nothing arrived, the three options below cover almost every situation.

Ask the Payer for a Duplicate

Going back to the source is usually the quickest fix. Payers are required to furnish 1099s to recipients, so requesting a replacement is a routine call, not a favor.2Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Forms 1099-MISC and 1099-NEC (04/2025) – Section: Statements to Recipients For contract work, reach the company’s accounts payable or payroll department. Ask specifically for a duplicate rather than a corrected form; a correction is a different process and takes longer. If the payer has gone out of business or you simply cannot reach them, move on to the IRS options below.

Download It From the Payer’s Online Portal

Many payers post 1099s in digital portals well before paper copies go out. Brokerages, banks, and payroll platforms like ADP or Gusto usually keep a tax documents section where you can view and download current and prior year forms. If your account is still active, this is often the fastest route of all. Look for a tab labeled Tax Center, Statements, or Documents, and filter by year.

Save the download as a PDF somewhere you won’t lose it. Digital copies contain the same information reported to the IRS and work for filing purposes. Keeping a backup PDF also spares you the same scramble next year.
