How to Get a Copy of Your 1099 Online or From the IRS

To get a copy of your 1099, start with the payer’s online tax-document portal, then ask the payer’s accounts payable or tax office for a duplicate, and if neither works, request a free Wage and Income Transcript from the IRS. Payers are required to furnish most 1099 forms to recipients by January 31, so if nothing has arrived by mid-February, it’s reasonable to start chasing it down.1Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Forms 1099-MISC and 1099-NEC The April filing deadline does not move because your paperwork is late, so work the three routes in parallel rather than in sequence if time is tight.

Check the Payer’s Online Portal First

This is the fastest route and it works more often than people expect. Banks almost always post 1099-INT and 1099-DIV forms for download in January. Brokerages, freelance platforms, and payroll services usually do the same. Log into any account where you received payments and look for a section labeled “Tax Documents” or “Tax Forms.” The downloadable PDF is an exact copy of what the payer filed with the IRS and is valid for your records.

If you consented to electronic delivery at some point, the payer may not have mailed a paper copy at all.2Internal Revenue Service. Requirements for Furnishing Form 1099-G Electronically Check email, including the spam folder, for a notification that your tax document is available before assuming the form is missing.

Ask the Payer for a Duplicate

If no digital copy exists, contact the payer’s accounting, payroll, or tax office. General customer service lines usually can’t help with tax documents. Before you call, have this information ready so they can pull your record quickly:

  • Your Social Security number or ITIN as used on the original engagement
  • The tax year the income was earned
  • The mailing address the payer had on file when the form went out, which may not be where you live now
  • The type of income involved, so the payer knows which 1099 variant to reissue

Confirm your current mailing address before they send the replacement. Forms mailed to an old address are one of the most common reasons a 1099 never reaches you. Most companies can produce a duplicate within seven to ten business days.

When the Payer Won’t Respond

If the payer ignores you, has gone out of business, or refuses to issue the form, wait until the end of February and then call the IRS at 800-829-1040. Have your name, address, Social Security number, the payer’s name and contact information, and an estimate of the income ready. The IRS will send the payer a letter requesting that they furnish the form.3Internal Revenue Service. What to Do When a W-2 or Form 1099 Is Missing or Incorrect

Payers that fail to furnish a correct 1099 face penalties of $50 to $250 per form under federal law, with the amount rising the longer the failure goes uncorrected.4Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 6722 – Failure to Furnish Correct Payee Statements Mentioning that exposure sometimes moves a stalled request along. The penalties apply to the payer, not to you.

Get a Wage and Income Transcript from the IRS

When the payer route fails, a Wage and Income Transcript is the reliable fallback. It compiles the data from every W-2, 1099, 1098, and 5498 filed with the IRS under your taxpayer ID. It’s free, and current-year data typically shows up in the first week of February.5Internal Revenue Service. Get Your Tax Records and Transcripts

One important thing to know: the transcript is not a photocopy of the original 1099. It’s a summary showing the payer’s name, the type of form, the income amount, and any federal tax withheld. That’s enough to file an accurate return and enough for most other purposes, including financial aid verification.

Online Through Your IRS Individual Account

The fastest way to pull the transcript is through your IRS Individual Online Account, which requires identity verification through ID.me. You’ll need a government-issued photo ID (driver’s license, state ID, or passport) and a selfie taken with your phone or webcam.6Internal Revenue Service. New Identity Verification Process to Access Certain IRS Online Tools and Services Once verified, you can view, print, or download the transcript immediately. The system covers the current year and up to nine prior tax years.

The online tool caps at roughly 85 income documents per year. If you have more than that, common for investors with many brokerage accounts, the tool won’t generate the transcript and will direct you to request it by mail.7Internal Revenue Service. By Mail or Phone

If you can’t use the online system, submit Form 4506-T (Request for Transcript of Tax Return) by mail or fax, checking line 8 to request the Wage and Income Transcript for the year you need.8Internal Revenue Service. Form 4506-T, Request for Transcript of Tax Return Most mailed requests are processed within 10 business days, though tax season backs that up. The automated transcript line at 800-908-9946 is another option.

If Your 1099 Is Wrong Instead of Missing

A 1099 that overstates your income is arguably worse than a missing one, because the IRS already has the inflated number on file. Contact the payer immediately and request a corrected form. Corrected 1099s have a “CORRECTED” checkbox marked at the top, which distinguishes them from the original.

If the payer won’t fix it and February ends without resolution, call the IRS at 800-829-1040 with the same information you’d provide for a missing form.3Internal Revenue Service. What to Do When a W-2 or Form 1099 Is Missing or Incorrect File your return using the correct income amount from your own records rather than the wrong figure on the 1099. If a corrected form arrives after you’ve already filed, use Form 1040-X to amend your return and attach a copy of the corrected 1099.

If April Arrives and You Still Don’t Have It

You are required to report all taxable income whether or not a 1099 shows up. File on time using your own records: bank statements, invoices, payment app history, and deposit slips all work as documentation.9Internal Revenue Service. What Kind of Records Should I Keep Self-employment income goes on Schedule C regardless of whether a 1099-NEC was issued, and you’ll owe self-employment tax on net earnings of $400 or more.

One boundary worth flagging: the IRS provides Form 4852 as a substitute for a missing W-2 or 1099-R only.10Internal Revenue Service. About Form 4852, Substitute for Form W-2, Wage and Tax Statement There is no substitute form for a missing 1099-NEC, 1099-MISC, or 1099-INT. You just report the income on the appropriate line or schedule using your records. If the actual 1099 arrives later showing different amounts, file Form 1040-X to amend.

Why Skipping It Doesn’t Work

The IRS receives a copy of every 1099 filed and runs automated matching against your return. When the numbers don’t line up, the system generates a CP2000 notice proposing changes and calculating additional tax plus interest.11Internal Revenue Service. Understanding Your CP2000 Series Notice These notices often arrive months or more than a year after you file, and interest accrues the whole time.

The IRS specifically lists failing to report 1099 income as an example of negligence. The accuracy-related penalty for negligence is 20% of the underpaid tax, on top of the tax itself and the accumulated interest.12Internal Revenue Service. Accuracy-Related Penalty Reporting the income up front, using a transcript or your own records if needed, costs you nothing extra.

One more reason to run down a missing 1099: if you didn’t give the payer a correct taxpayer ID, they may have taken 24% out as backup withholding.13Internal Revenue Service. Publication 15 (2026), (Circular E), Employer’s Tax Guide That withholding appears on your Wage and Income Transcript and can be claimed as a credit on your return. You only get that money back by filing.
