The online portal is fastest, and digital copies usually post there a few days before paper versions reach the mail. Which MassMutual 1099 You’re Looking For
The retrieval steps are the same across forms, but knowing which one you need helps when you’re talking to a representative or scanning the portal. MassMutual issues:
- Form 1099-R for distributions from annuities, pension plans, retirement accounts, or insurance contracts, including withdrawals, annuity payments, and policy surrenders.2Internal Revenue Service. - Form 1099-INT for interest income of $10 or more, such as interest on life insurance proceeds left on deposit with the company.3Internal Revenue Service. About Form 1099-INT, Interest Income
- Form 1099-LTC for long-term care benefits or accelerated death benefits paid under a life insurance contract.4Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 1099-LTC (04/2025)
A form only exists if a reportable event actually happened during the year. Holding an annuity with no distributions produces no 1099-R. Reporting is generally triggered once the amount paid reaches $10 in the calendar year.5Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 403, Interest Received
Have This Ready Before You Request
MassMutual can’t pull your records or verify you on the phone without a few basics. Gather them first:
- Full legal name as it appears on the policy or account.
- Social Security Number or Taxpayer Identification Number tied to the account.
- Contract or policy number, printed on the first page of your original policy and at the top of annual statements.
- Current mailing address. An outdated address is the most common reason a 1099 never arrives, so update it during the same call or portal session if it has changed.
Requesting on someone else’s behalf takes more paperwork. For a deceased policyholder, MassMutual generally requires a certified copy of the death certificate along with letters testamentary or letters of administration naming you as executor or personal representative.
Retrieving It Through the Online Portal
Go to massmutual.com and pick your account type on the login page.6MassMutual. Save a copy to your own computer or cloud storage while you’re there. If you need the form later for an amended return, a loan application, or an audit, you won’t be starting over.

Include your full legal name, Social Security Number, policy or contract number, the specific form and tax year you need (for example, “2025 Form 1099-R”), and the address where the duplicate should be sent. A few sentences covering those details is enough; there’s no dedicated request form for tax documents. Mail is the slowest of the three routes. Between transit both ways and internal processing, expect two to three weeks.
When Your 1099 Should Arrive
MassMutual must send your 1099-R by January 31 of the year after the tax year.1Internal Revenue Service. General Instructions for Certain Information Returns (2025) Other 1099s, including the 1099-INT, carry a furnishing deadline in early February. Paper copies are typically postmarked on or just before those dates, and actual delivery depends on the postal service in your area.
If nothing has arrived by mid-February, check the portal first, because the digital copy often posts earlier. If it isn’t there either, call to confirm MassMutual has your current address and to request a duplicate. Late February isn’t a crisis. The individual filing deadline for 2026 is April 15,9Internal Revenue Service. When to File but waiting until April to chase a missing form leaves almost no margin if anything goes wrong.
If the Form Has an Error
Sometimes the distribution amount is off, the Social Security Number has a typo, or the taxable portion is coded wrong. Don’t file a return using numbers you know are wrong; the mismatch with what MassMutual reported to the IRS is exactly what triggers follow-up notices.
The IRS advises contacting the payer directly for a corrected form.10Internal Revenue Service. What to Do When a W-2 or Form 1099 Is Missing or Incorrect Call 1-800-272-2216 and explain the specific error. If the form is wrong, MassMutual will issue a corrected 1099 with the “CORRECTED” box checked at the top and file the corrected version with the IRS so both copies match.8MassMutual. If the Form Doesn’t Come in Time
A missing 1099 doesn’t excuse the income. The IRS already has MassMutual’s copy, so the amount is in their system whether or not the paper reached your mailbox. Use your own account records — withdrawal confirmations, annual statements, online transaction history — to calculate the distribution and any tax withheld, then report the income and file on time.
