How to Get a 1099-INT From Your Bank: Online, App, or Paper Copy

You can get a 1099-INT from your bank in three ways: download it from the bank’s website, pull it through the mobile app, or ask for a paper copy by phone or at a branch. Banks are required to produce the form for any account that earned at least $10 in interest during the year, and for the 2025 tax year they must deliver or postmark it by February 2, 2026, since the usual January 31 deadline falls on a Saturday.1Internal Revenue Service. General Instructions for Certain Information Returns (2025)2eCFR. 26 CFR 1.6049-4 – Return of Information as to Interest Paid and Original Issue Discount Includible in Gross Income After December 31, 1982 Digital copies often appear in your online account a week or more before the paper version is mailed.

Check Your Account Details First

Before you go looking for the form, confirm two things with your bank: that it has your correct Social Security Number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number, and that your mailing address is current. Banks collect your taxpayer ID through Form W-9, which links your legal name to your accounts.3Internal Revenue Service. About Form W-9, Request for Taxpayer Identification Number and Certification

If your taxpayer ID is missing or incorrect, the bank must withhold 24% of your interest as backup withholding and send it to the IRS.4Internal Revenue Service. Backup Withholding Giving the bank the correct ID stops the withholding going forward. Any amount already withheld shows up in Box 4 of your 1099-INT and can be claimed as a credit when you file.

Download the 1099-INT From Online Banking

Sign in to your bank’s website with your usual credentials. Look for a menu labeled Documents, Statements, or Tax Center. Most banks put year-end tax forms in a dedicated section. Select the tax year you need and open the 1099-INT.

The form downloads as a PDF. Save it somewhere you can find it later. That digital copy is valid whether you file electronically or print your return on paper. If you hold interest-bearing accounts at more than one bank, repeat the process at each one. Every bank issues its own 1099-INT covering only its accounts, so a single household can end up with several.

Use Your Bank’s Mobile App

Mobile apps carry the same tax documents as the desktop site. Open the app and look under More, Settings, or Documents for a tax forms area, then pick the 1099-INT for the year you want.

Use the share or save icon to send the PDF to your phone’s files, to cloud storage, or straight to your tax preparer by email. Skip public Wi-Fi for this. Cellular data or a trusted home network is safer when the file contains your Social Security Number and account information.

Request a Paper Copy by Phone or in Person

If you would rather not use the digital tools, call the customer service number printed on your bank statement and ask for a duplicate 1099-INT. The representative will verify your identity and confirm your mailing address. Expect the copy to arrive within five to ten business days.

A branch visit is the fastest non-digital option. Bring a valid government-issued photo ID so staff can verify your identity and print the form on the spot. While you are there, you can update your address or switch to paperless delivery so next year’s form is waiting online.

If the Form Never Arrives or Looks Wrong

If mid-February passes and you still do not have your 1099-INT, contact the bank first and ask for a copy. If nothing arrives by the end of February, call the IRS at 800-829-1040. Have your name, address, phone number, Social Security Number, and the bank’s name and contact information ready. The IRS will contact the bank on your behalf.5Internal Revenue Service. What to Do When a W-2 or Form 1099 Is Missing or Incorrect

If the form still has not come by the April filing deadline, do not miss the deadline waiting for it. File on time using the interest total from your bank statements or year-end account summary. That protects you from late-filing penalties.

When the numbers on a 1099-INT look wrong, ask the bank for a corrected version. Corrected forms have the “Corrected” box checked at the top. If you already filed before the corrected form arrived and the new figures change what you owe, file Form 1040-X to amend your return.5Internal Revenue Service. Pull the Data From the IRS Instead

When the bank simply will not produce a form, the IRS itself keeps a record. Request a Wage and Income Transcript, which shows what banks and other payers reported to the IRS under your Social Security Number, including 1099-INT data. You can request it through your online IRS account or by mailing Form 4506-T.6Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 159, How to Get a Wage and Income Transcript One catch: transcripts for the most recent tax year may not be complete until mid-to-late spring, because payers have until late February or March to file their returns with the IRS.

You Owe Tax on the Interest Either Way

If your account earned less than $10 in interest, your bank probably will not issue a 1099-INT at all. That does not mean the interest is tax-free. You are required to report all taxable interest on your federal return whether or not you receive a form.7Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 403, Interest Received Check your December statement or online account for a year-to-date interest figure and use that number when you file. If your total taxable interest from all sources tops $1,500 for the year, you also have to complete Schedule B and list each payer.8Internal Revenue Service. The IRS gets a copy of every 1099-INT your bank issues. Leaving that interest off your return can bring an accuracy-related penalty of 20% on the resulting underpayment, plus interest on the unpaid balance.9Internal Revenue Service. Accuracy-Related Penalty Your 2025 federal return is due April 15, 2026, which gives you roughly ten weeks after the form arrives to prepare and file.10Internal Revenue Service.
