If Social Security keeps telling you “we cannot process your request at this time,” the message almost always means one of two things: the site is having a temporary problem, or something you entered doesn’t match what SSA has on file. Both are fixable, and if they aren’t fixable today, you can still file what you need by phone, by mail, or in person while you work on the online account.
Is the Problem on SSA’s End?
Before you touch anything on your side, check status.ssa.gov. The page shows current outages and scheduled maintenance in real time.1Social Security Administration. SSA Web Services Status If the site is down, no browser trick will get you in. Come back later.
If the status page is clean, rule out the easy technical causes next. Clear your browser’s cache and cookies. Old session tokens interfere with SSA’s security checks. Switch browsers if that doesn’t help. SSA supports Chrome 81+, Firefox 77+, Safari 13.7+, and Edge 81+. Internet Explorer 11 and Samsung Internet are not supported, and iPhones older than the iPhone 7 are not supported either.2Social Security Administration. Supported Browsers and Mobile Devices
Turn off any VPN. A masked location trips SSA’s security checks. Disable ad-blockers too, since they can break the scripts the verification flow depends on. If you keep hitting the error during the day, try late evening or early morning when traffic is lighter.
Fix a Mismatch Between Your Info and SSA Records
When the technical checks aren’t the problem, the system is almost certainly failing on identity verification. To create or sign into a my Social Security account, SSA checks your name, date of birth, Social Security number, and address against its own records and against third-party databases. One character off is enough to fail the check and produce the generic error.
The most common cause is a name that no longer matches SSA’s records. If you married, divorced, or changed your name and never filed the change with SSA, expect to be rejected every time. An outdated address does the same thing, because SSA cross-checks against credit bureau data. A fraud alert on your credit report will also block account creation through SSA’s direct verification, though you can get around that by using ID.me instead.3Social Security Administration. To update your name with SSA, submit Form SS-5 with supporting documents such as a marriage certificate or court order.4Social Security Administration. Social Security Forms Address changes can be made inside my Social Security once you can log in, or by phone.
If you can’t tell what’s mismatched, or you’ve been locked out after failed attempts, call 1-800-772-1213 and say “Help Desk” at the voice prompt. Login.gov and ID.me Lockouts
Your my Social Security account rides on either a Login.gov or an ID.me credential.7Social Security Administration. my Social Security The error can originate with either service rather than with SSA itself, so it helps to know which door is closed.
Login.gov
Login.gov locks accounts after too many wrong passwords, too many security code requests, or too many failed identity verification attempts. Wait 10 minutes for password and code lockouts. Identity verification lockouts are stricter: wait six hours, return through the SSA website rather than Login.gov directly, sign in with your existing email and password, and you’ll be prompted to verify again.8Login.gov. If online verification keeps failing, Login.gov offers in-person verification at participating U.S. Post Office locations. You’ll get a barcode to bring with you, and postal staff will check your ID. Expect an email within 24 hours of the visit confirming the result. Watch the barcode expiration date: if it lapses before you make it to the post office, you start over.9Login.gov. Verify in Person
ID.me
ID.me relies on a photo of your government ID plus a facial scan. If the automated scan fails, options are limited. As of early 2025, SSA requires anyone who can’t verify online to visit a local Social Security office in person.10Biometric Update. Did You Block Your Own Record?
This one catches people off guard. If you previously asked SSA to block electronic access to your Social Security record as a fraud measure, that block prevents you from using online services until you remove it. You cannot undo it online. Call 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) and request removal after proving your identity over the phone.11Social Security Administration. File Without the Website
You don’t have to wait for the website to cooperate. SSA accepts applications and other requests by phone, mail, and in person.
By phone, call 1-800-772-1213 between 8:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. local time, Monday through Friday.6Social Security Administration. Contact Social Security by Phone Calling right at 8:00 a.m. or after 5:00 p.m. usually means shorter holds.
By mail or fax, download the form you need from ssa.gov/forms, complete it offline, and send it to your local Social Security office.12Social Security Administration. Submit Forms and Upload Documents Use certified mail so you have proof of the receipt date. That date can matter more than you’d expect.
In person, SSA moved to an appointment-based model in January 2025, so call ahead to schedule. The agency has said it will not turn people away who arrive without an appointment, and office managers have instructions to provide same-day service when warranted.5Social Security Administration. Protect Your Filing Date While You Troubleshoot
This is where a website error can actually cost you money. For retirement benefits, your filing date sets when payments start and how much you receive. Past full retirement age, SSA can pay up to six months of retroactive benefits and not a day more.14Social Security Administration. Benefits Planner: Retirement – Delayed Retirement Credits Every month spent fighting the error without a filing date on record is a month you may not get back.
SSA recognizes a protective filing date. If you start an online application and complete the applicant identification screens far enough to receive an application number, that date holds as your filing date even if you can’t finish right away. If the error stops you before that point, call SSA or visit an office right away. A written statement of your intent to file, or information a representative enters into SSA’s appointment system, can also establish a protective filing date.15Social Security Administration. When an SSA Error Causes Real Harm
In limited situations SSA can grant equitable relief when a government error damages your benefit rights. It applies when an SSA employee’s mistake, misinformation, or failure to act directly hurts your enrollment or coverage, and it lets SSA backdate coverage periods and adjust premium liability to undo the damage.16Social Security Administration. The bar is specific. You need evidence that the government made an error and that the error directly harmed your rights. General hardship or “good cause” for a missed deadline is not enough on its own. But if a documented system failure blocked your enrollment during an open period, or a representative gave you wrong instructions that caused you to miss a deadline, equitable relief is the mechanism to fix it. Document everything as you go: screenshots of error messages, dates and times of failed attempts, and the names of any representatives you speak with.16Social Security Administration.
