IRS Error Code 3000 is a generic identity-validation rejection your tax software shows when the IRS can’t confirm that the personal information on your e-filed return matches its records. Three things cause almost every instance: a wrong prior-year adjusted gross income, a name or Social Security number that doesn’t match Social Security Administration files, or a missing or incorrect Identity Protection PIN. Each has a specific fix, and most filers can correct the problem and resubmit the same day.
Figure Out Which Mismatch Triggered the Rejection
Tax software packages bundle several distinct IRS reject codes under a single display error, so the first step is opening the rejection detail your software provides. The underlying codes generally fall into three buckets:
- Name or SSN mismatch, typically shown as R0000-500-01, meaning the primary taxpayer’s name or Social Security number doesn’t match IRS records.1Internal Revenue Service. Business Rule R0000-500
- Prior-year AGI mismatch, meaning the AGI you entered for identity verification doesn’t match the AGI on the return the IRS actually accepted last year.
- Missing or wrong Identity Protection PIN, which will reject a return even when every other field is correct.2Internal Revenue Service. Get an Identity Protection PIN
Similar codes exist for spouses and dependents. Once you know which field the IRS flagged, the fix follows directly.
Fix a Prior-Year AGI Mismatch
The AGI mismatch is the most common reason returns bounce. The IRS compares the prior-year AGI you enter against the AGI on the last return it accepted and processed. Being off by a single dollar triggers a rejection. For the 2026 filing season, that means the AGI on your 2025 Form 1040, line 11.3Internal Revenue Service. Validating Your Electronically Filed Tax Return
Several situations trip people up:
- You filed jointly last year but separately this year. Use the AGI from the joint return, not a split or estimated amount.
- You didn’t file last year. Enter zero.
- Your prior-year return was still being processed when you filed this year. Enter zero, because the IRS hasn’t finished recording your AGI.3Internal Revenue Service. Validating Your Electronically Filed Tax Return
- Last year’s e-file was rejected and you never resubmitted. Enter zero, since the IRS never accepted a return from you.
- You filed an amended return. Use the AGI from the original accepted return unless the IRS finished processing the amendment before you filed this year.
- Your spouse is now the primary filer. Use the AGI from the prior joint return.
The most reliable way to confirm the number is through your IRS Online Account, which shows your AGI on the Tax Records tab.3Internal Revenue Service. Fix a Name, SSN, or Date-of-Birth Mismatch
Reject code R0000-500-01 fires when the primary taxpayer’s name or SSN doesn’t match IRS records.1Internal Revenue Service. Business Rule R0000-500 Similar codes cover spouses and dependents. The data on your return has to match, character for character, what the Social Security Administration has on file.
Pull every Social Security card for every person on the return and compare it against what you typed. The common mistakes are ordinary ones: transposed digits, a missing suffix like “Jr.” or “III,” or a first name typed as a nickname instead of the legal name. Your return needs the legal name exactly as it appears on the Social Security card.5Internal Revenue Service. Name Changes and Social Security Number Matching Issues
Recent Name Changes
If you recently changed your name through marriage, divorce, or court order, the name on the return has to match what the SSA currently has on file. Filing under the new name before the SSA updates its records causes a rejection. You can still file jointly under a married filing status without changing your name at the SSA, but the return needs to show your former name until the SSA processes the update.5Internal Revenue Service. Name Changes and Social Security Number Matching Issues To update your name with the SSA, call 1-800-772-1213.
Dependents and Newborns
If a dependent’s SSN or name is the source of the rejection, the same rule applies: match the Social Security card exactly. For newborns, confirm the SSN has actually been issued and recorded by the SSA before you file. Parents often apply for a baby’s SSN at the hospital, assume it’s active, and file before the SSA has finished processing the application.
Fix an Identity Protection PIN Problem
The IP PIN is a six-digit number the IRS uses to block someone else from filing under your Social Security number. Anyone with an SSN or ITIN can opt in, and the IRS assigns them automatically to confirmed identity theft victims.2Internal Revenue Service. Get an Identity Protection PIN If the IRS has an IP PIN on file for you, the return is rejected without it, even when every other field is correct.6Internal Revenue Service. Retrieve Your Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN)
IP PINs expire each calendar year and a new one is generated annually. If you opted in through the IRS website, you won’t get a notice in the mail, so you need to log into your IRS Online Account each year to retrieve the current number. Identity theft victims receive theirs via a CP01A notice, usually in January.2Internal Revenue Service. Get an Identity Protection PIN
If you’ve lost the PIN or never received the notice, you have three ways to recover it:
- Log into your IRS Online Account and find it in the IP PIN section of your profile. This is the fastest route.
- Submit Form 15227 if you can’t create an online account and your AGI is below $84,000 (or $168,000 for joint filers). The IRS will call to verify your identity by phone.
- Schedule an appointment at a local Taxpayer Assistance Center and bring photo identification.2Internal Revenue Service. Get an Identity Protection PIN
One thing that trips up enrolled filers: an IP PIN on an e-filed return serves as your identity verification in place of prior-year AGI.7Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 255, Signing Your Return Electronically So if you’re in the program and keep hitting what looks like an AGI rejection, check that your software is actually prompting you for the IP PIN, because that’s the field the IRS is checking.
If You’re Near the Filing Deadline
A rejection doesn’t automatically extend your filing deadline, but there’s a narrow grace period. If the IRS rejects your return on or near the deadline, you have 10 calendar days from the rejection notice to either retransmit electronically or mail a paper return. As long as you meet that window, the return is treated as timely filed.8Internal Revenue Service. Age, Name, SSN Rejects, Errors, Correction Procedures
Miss the window and the failure-to-file penalty applies: 5% of the tax owed for each month or partial month the return is late, up to 25%. If the return is more than 60 days late, the minimum penalty is $525 or 100% of the tax owed, whichever is less.9Internal Revenue Service. Failure to File Penalty These penalties apply only if you owe tax. Filing late on a refund return costs you nothing but time.
When to Give Up and File on Paper
If you’ve corrected every field you can identify and the e-file system still rejects your return, paper is the fallback. Print the return from your tax software, sign it in ink (both spouses must sign a joint return), and attach copies of your W-2s and any 1099s showing tax withheld. Mail it to the IRS service center for your state; the correct address depends on where you live and whether you’re enclosing a payment.10Internal Revenue Service. Where to File Paper Tax Returns With or Without a Payment
Paper takes longer. The IRS generally processes e-filed returns within 21 days; paper returns take six weeks or more, and longer during peak filing season or if manual review is needed.11Internal Revenue Service. Processing Status for Tax Forms Any refund waits until processing is complete.
