If you wrote the wrong name, the wrong amount, or made another mistake on a money order, do not cross it out, white it out, or write over it. Any visible correction makes the money order look altered, and a bank teller will refuse to cash it. The way to fix a mistake on a money order is to cancel the original through the issuer, pay a processing fee, and either take the refund or use it to buy a new one.
Fees run roughly $5 to $21 depending on who issued the money order and how much it was worth. That is almost always cheaper than the trouble of having a payment bounce back.
Why You Cannot Just Write Over the Mistake
Under the Uniform Commercial Code, a fraudulent alteration to a negotiable instrument discharges the obligation of the party whose terms were changed.1Cornell Law Institute. Uniform Commercial Code 3-407 – Alteration In plain terms: once a money order looks tampered with, it stops being negotiable. Tellers are trained to reject them. Your correction may be completely innocent, but the document is finished the moment it looks changed.
So the fix is procedural, not cosmetic. You cancel the flawed money order, get your money back (minus a fee), and start over.
Which Mistakes Actually Require Cancellation
Not every field carries the same weight.
- Wrong payee name. Banks match the name on the money order to the recipient’s ID. Even a misspelling can get it rejected, so a replacement is almost always needed.
- Wrong dollar amount. The printed amount cannot be changed. Cancel and reissue.
- Wrong purchaser name or address (your own info). Less critical, since this field is mostly for the issuer’s records. But if you later need to file a claim, incorrect info on your end can slow things down.
When it is a close call, cancel and buy a new one. A few dollars now beats a rejected payment later.
What to Gather Before You Request a Refund
Before you contact the issuer, pull together:
- The original purchase receipt or detachable stub, which has the serial number, amount, and date.
- The uncashed money order itself, if you still have it. Some issuers process refunds faster when they can verify the physical document.
- A separate check or money order to cover the processing fee. Some issuers deduct the fee from your refund instead.

One transposed digit will delay your claim. Western Union and MoneyGram serial numbers look different but appear in the same two places.

If the Money Order Has Already Been Cashed
If you delayed and the recipient (or someone else) already cashed the money order, no refund is available. The issuer will instead send you a photocopy of the cashed money order showing the endorsement, so you can see who signed for the funds.
If the signature looks forged, or nobody was authorized to cash it, you have options beyond a refund.
