To find your SAI on the FAFSA, log in to StudentAid.gov, open the “My Activity” section of your dashboard, select your submitted FAFSA for the current award year, and choose “View FAFSA Submission Summary.” Your Student Aid Index appears at the top of the “Eligibility Overview” tab, alongside your estimated federal aid. The number only shows up once your application status reads “Processed.”1Federal Student Aid. Learn About the FAFSA Submission Summary
Your FAFSA Has To Be Fully Processed First
If the Submission Summary won’t open, or opens without an SAI, check the status label on your FAFSA card in “My Activity.” Only one label produces an SAI.2Federal Student Aid. How To Review and Correct Your FAFSA Form
- Draft — your section isn’t finished and nothing has been submitted.
- In Progress — you signed, but the form isn’t fully submitted, usually because a contributor still needs to complete their part.
- In Review — submitted and still processing. Online submissions typically take one to three days.3Federal Student Aid. 2026-27 FAFSA Form Now Available
- Action Required — a signature or consent is missing, or a correction is needed before the SAI can be calculated.
- Processed — your SAI is available on the Submission Summary.
- Closed — the form was never submitted and the federal deadline has passed.
You also need a verified FSA ID to view the Submission Summary. When you first create one, the Social Security Administration takes one to three days to confirm your identity, and until that finishes your access is limited to submitting an initial form.4Federal Student Aid. Creating and Using the FSA ID If a parent or spouse had to contribute to your FAFSA, that person also needs a verified account and a completed signature; without it, the form won’t process and no SAI will be calculated.5Federal Student Aid Handbook. Reading the SAI Once You Find It
The SAI is an index, not a bill. It ranges from -1,500 to 999,999, and a lower number signals higher financial need.6Federal Student Aid. The Student Aid Index (SAI) Explained Schools use it, together with their cost of attendance, to decide how much need-based aid you qualify for, and your state grant agency receives it as well.7Knowledge Center. Guidance for State Grant Agencies and Institutions of Higher Education
The clearest impact is on the Federal Pell Grant. For 2026–27, the maximum award is $7,395 and the minimum is $740.8Knowledge Center. 2026-27 Federal Pell Grant Maximum and Minimum Award Amounts An SAI of 0 or below qualifies for the maximum Pell Grant.9Federal Student Aid Handbook. Chapter 3 Student Aid Index (SAI) and Pell Grant Eligibility An SAI above 6,655 makes you ineligible for an SAI-calculated Pell Grant.
A negative SAI does not push your Pell Grant above the maximum. A dependent student whose parents are not required to file a federal tax return, or an independent student not required to file, is automatically assigned an SAI of -1,500, but the Pell award is the same as at 0.9Federal Student Aid Handbook. Chapter 3 Student Aid Index (SAI) and Pell Grant Eligibility Some colleges may still use a negative SAI to prioritize their own institutional grant funds.
Why the SAI Might Not Be Showing
If the Submission Summary opens but no SAI is displayed, the cause is usually one of three things.
- Missing signature or consent. If your status shows “Action Required,” a contributor probably hasn’t signed or given consent. The form won’t finish processing until every required signature is in.2Federal Student Aid. How To Review and Correct Your FAFSA Form
- Missing family size. A known FAFSA issue can block the SAI calculation when household size information wasn’t collected properly. The parent contributor should start a correction, go to the financial section, confirm the family size has changed since filing taxes, and manually enter the correct number.10Knowledge Center. - Still processing. “In Review” means the form was submitted but hasn’t finished. Give it one to three days.3Federal Student Aid. 2026-27 FAFSA Form Now Available
If the Submission Summary explicitly says “action required,” it will name the item you need to fix before eligibility can be determined.1Federal Student Aid. Learn About the FAFSA Submission Summary After you fix it, expect another one to three days for reprocessing.
If Your SAI Looks Wrong
Open the “FAFSA Form Answers” tab on your Submission Summary and read through it. Errors in reported income, household size, or tax filing status can move the SAI substantially. To correct anything that wasn’t imported directly from the IRS, log in to StudentAid.gov, select the processed FAFSA in “My Activity,” and edit the relevant section.11Federal Student Aid Handbook. Chapter 4 Verification, Updates, and Corrections
You’ll need to sign the corrected form electronically. If the change is in a contributor’s section, such as a parent’s income, that contributor has to sign again as well; if only your student section changed, the parent does not.12Federal Student Aid. Asking Your School To Adjust Your SAI
If your family’s finances have changed since the tax year on your FAFSA, the SAI on your Submission Summary may overstate what you can actually pay. In that case, ask a financial aid administrator at your school to use professional judgment to adjust it. This request cannot be made through StudentAid.gov; it has to go through the school directly.
Two categories of adjustment exist under federal law. “Special circumstances” cover financial changes that justify recalculating SAI inputs, including a change in employment or income, a change in housing status (including homelessness), private elementary or secondary tuition, uncovered medical or dental costs, child or dependent care expenses, or a severe disability in the household. “Unusual circumstances” let the administrator change your dependency status from dependent to independent, which removes parental income from the calculation and can lower your SAI sharply. Qualifying situations include parental abandonment, being a trafficking survivor, refugee or asylum status, or parental incarceration.13Federal Student Aid Handbook. Special Cases
A parent refusing to contribute money, refusing to provide FAFSA information, or not claiming you as a tax dependent does not, on its own, qualify for a dependency override.13Federal Student Aid Handbook. Special Cases Bring documentation with your request: unemployment records, medical bills, court orders, or statements from a social service agency.
Checking Your SAI Against Your Aid Offers
Every school you listed on the FAFSA receives the same data, so the SAI should be identical on each financial aid offer you get.14Federal Student Aid. Comparing School Aid Offers Many schools print the SAI near the section that shows how they calculated your need, though placement varies because aid offers aren’t standardized.15Federal Student Aid. How To Evaluate Your Aid Offers If a school’s offer shows an SAI that doesn’t match the one on your Submission Summary, call that school’s financial aid office; they may be working from your data as it existed before a correction was processed.
