How to Find Your HSA Account Number and Routing Number

Your HSA account number is on the welcome kit your custodian mailed you, on your paper or electronic statements, on IRS Forms 1099-SA and 5498-SA, inside your online portal or mobile app, and available by phone using the number on the back of your HSA debit card. It is not the 16-digit number printed on the debit card itself; that number only works at the point of sale. To find your HSA account number, start with whichever source is closest to hand.

Check Your Paperwork

The welcome packet from your HSA custodian is the fastest offline source. The enrollment confirmation page or signature card inside carries the full account number. If the welcome kit is long gone, any monthly or quarterly statement works. The number usually sits in the top-right header or in the account summary box near the opening balance.

Tax documents are the next place to look. IRS Form 1099-SA (distributions) and Form 5498-SA (contributions) both include a field labeled “Account number” that your custodian fills in to identify your account.1Internal Revenue Service. One catch. Many statements and tax forms truncate the number for security, showing only the last four digits. A redacted document won’t give you the full string. Go back to the original enrollment paperwork or use one of the methods below.

Look It Up in Your Online Portal or App

Signing in to your HSA provider’s website or app is the quickest way to pull the number in real time. After you log in, look for a section called something like Account Summary, Account Details, or Profile. The full number is usually there but hidden by default.

Find the eye icon or the “Show” button next to the masked digits and click it. Most providers require multi-factor authentication before revealing sensitive details, so have your phone ready for a text code or authenticator prompt. If you’ve never set up MFA, the provider will walk you through it as you go.

If the portal doesn’t display the full number directly, download a PDF of your most recent electronic statement. Digital statements mirror the paper versions and often show the unredacted account number. Save the PDF locally and you’ll have it next time.

Call Customer Support

When documents and the portal aren’t options, call the customer service number printed on the back of your HSA debit card or listed on the provider’s website. Expect to verify your identity first. Federal banking rules require financial institutions to confirm they’re speaking with the actual account holder.3eCFR. 31 CFR 1020.220 – Customer Identification Program Requirements for Banks

You’ll typically need your full legal name, Social Security number, date of birth, and the mailing address on file. Once verification clears, the agent can read the number to you or send it through a secure message inside your portal. If you’ve recently moved or changed your name and haven’t updated the account yet, have your old details ready so verification doesn’t stall.

If You’re Not Sure Which Company Holds Your HSA

Before you can retrieve the account number, you have to know which institution manages the account. This trips people up more often than you’d expect, especially when an employer has switched custodians or the account was opened years ago during a benefits enrollment you barely remember.

Your Pay Stub and W-2

A recent pay stub is the fastest clue. HSA contributions appear in the pre-tax deductions section, and the line item usually names the custodian. If it isn’t there, check your most recent W-2. Employer HSA contributions, including your own pre-tax payroll contributions made through a cafeteria plan, appear in Box 12 with code “W.”4Internal Revenue Service. 2026 General Instructions for Forms W-2 and W-3 The W-2 won’t name the custodian, but it confirms you have an HSA and gives you something concrete to ask HR about.

Your Benefits Portal and HR

Most companies use a benefits platform like Workday or ADP where your health plan elections list the HSA custodian by name. If that isn’t clear, your HR or benefits team keeps records of which institution administers the company’s HSA program. One email usually gets you the custodian name, website, and phone number.

You’ll Probably Need the Routing Number Too

If you’re pulling up the account number to set up a direct deposit, contribute from an outside bank, or start a transfer, you’ll need the routing number as well. The routing number identifies the financial institution; the account number identifies your specific account within it. Any electronic movement of money uses both.

The routing number lives in the same places as the account number: the account details page in your online portal, paper statements, and the welcome kit. Some HSA custodians use a routing number that differs from their general banking routing number, so don’t assume the number on the custodian’s main banking website applies to your HSA. Pull it directly from your HSA portal or ask the HSA-specific customer service line.
