The quickest way to find your AGI without a tax return in hand is to sign in to your IRS Individual Online Account and open the Records and Status tab, where your adjusted gross income appears on screen for each recent tax year.1Internal Revenue Service. Adjusted Gross Income AGI is the number on Line 11 of Form 1040, and the IRS uses it as an electronic signature every time you e-file. If the online account isn’t an option, a free tax transcript by phone or mail will get you the same figure within a couple of weeks.
Use Your IRS Online Account
The IRS Online Account shows your AGI without any download or transcript order. After signing in, pick the tax year you need under Records and Status, and the number displays on screen. From the same dashboard you can also view, print, or download full transcripts.2Internal Revenue Service. Get Your Tax Records and Transcripts
First-time users have to verify identity through ID.me, the third-party credentialing service the IRS uses across its online tools.3Internal Revenue Service. New Identity Verification Process to Access Certain IRS Online Tools and Services You’ll need a government-issued photo ID (driver’s license, state ID, or passport) and a smartphone or webcam for the selfie match. If the automated check fails, ID.me offers a live video call with an agent. Anyone who already has an ID.me account from another government service can sign in with those credentials.
One timing detail matters. If you recently filed, the new AGI won’t appear right away. Allow two to three weeks after e-filing before the updated figure shows up. If you e-filed with a balance due and paid after submitting, allow three to four weeks after the payment clears.4Internal Revenue Service. Transcript Availability
Order a Free Tax Return Transcript
A tax return transcript is a line-by-line summary of the Form 1040 you originally filed, and your AGI is on it. It costs nothing. The transcript partially masks personal information like your Social Security number while keeping financial data visible, so it’s safe to share with a lender or a financial aid office.5Internal Revenue Service. About Form 4506-T, Request for Transcript of Tax Return There are three ways to get one.
Online
If you have an Online Account, the Get Transcript tool on irs.gov generates a downloadable document immediately. Check Your Software or Preparer’s Records
If you used commercial tax software, your old returns are almost certainly still in your account. Log in, open your prior-year filing, and look for Line 11 on the stored Form 1040. Most major platforms keep digital copies for several years.
If a paid preparer or CPA handled the return, federal law requires them to keep a copy (or at least a list with your name and taxpayer ID) for three years after the end of the return period.8Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 6107 – Tax Return Preparer Must Furnish Copy of Return to Taxpayer and Must Retain a Copy or List Call the office, verify your identity through their security process, and ask for the AGI from the year you need. Some firms charge an administrative fee to pull archived records, so ask upfront. This gives you the exact figure from the return you originally signed, not a government summary.
Why You Need the AGI: Fixing a Rejected E-File
Most people search for their AGI because their return got kicked back. When you e-file, the IRS checks the prior-year AGI you enter against its records as an electronic signature. If the numbers don’t match, the return bounces with a rejection code like IND-031-04 (primary taxpayer mismatch) or IND-032-04 (spouse mismatch).9Internal Revenue Service. Validating Your Electronically Filed Tax Return A handful of common mistakes cause most rejections.
- Using the wrong year. You need last year’s AGI. For a 2026 return, enter the AGI from your 2025 Form 1040, Line 11.
- Using an amended AGI. Enter the AGI from the original return you filed, not from any amendment.
- Splitting joint AGI. If you and your spouse filed jointly last year, each of you enters the full joint amount. Don’t divide it.
- Rounding. Enter the exact dollar amount shown on the return.
A few situations call for entering $0 as your prior-year AGI: you’re a first-time filer over age 16, you mailed a paper return last year that still hasn’t been processed, or you switched from an ITIN to a Social Security number since your last filing.9Internal Revenue Service. You May Not Need Your AGI at All
The IRS also accepts the five-digit self-select PIN you chose when signing last year’s e-filed return. If you remember it, enter that instead of your AGI and the return should go through.10Internal Revenue Service. Self-Select PIN Method for Forms 1040 and 4868 Modernized e-File
If the IRS has issued you an Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN), enter it when the software prompts you. The IP PIN acts as your identity verification and effectively replaces the AGI check.10Internal Revenue Service. Self-Select PIN Method for Forms 1040 and 4868 Modernized e-File A new IP PIN is generated every year, so use the current one. You can retrieve it through your IRS Online Account if you’ve lost the CP01A notice the IRS mailed.11Internal Revenue Service. When a Transcript Isn’t Enough
A transcript covers most needs, including e-file verification, mortgage applications, and financial aid. If a court, agency, or lender specifically requires a photocopy of your original Form 1040 with all attachments, that’s a different request: Form 4506, not 4506-T. The IRS charges $30 per return and processing takes up to 75 calendar days, so this route is not for retrieving your AGI to e-file.12Internal Revenue Service. Form 4506, Request for Copy of Tax Return
