To find out if you filed taxes with the IRS, log into your Individual Online Account at irs.gov, open Tax Records, and check whether a Return Transcript exists for the year in question. If one is there, the IRS received and processed a return for you. If it isn’t, either no return was filed or the IRS hasn’t finished processing one yet. Phone requests, mailed forms, and your own bank and software records can confirm the same thing when the online account isn’t an option.
Check Your IRS Online Account First
The Individual Online Account on irs.gov gives you the fastest answer. Creating an account or signing in runs through ID.me, which asks for a photo of a government-issued ID (driver’s license, state ID, or passport) and a selfie taken with a smartphone or webcam.1Internal Revenue Service. Once you’re in, click Tax Records and open the transcript section. Several transcript types will appear for different years. The Return Transcript is the one that directly answers your question: its presence means the IRS processed a return for that year.1Internal Revenue Service. Which Transcript Actually Answers the Question
The transcripts are not interchangeable, and picking the wrong one can send you off on a false trail.
The Return Transcript shows most line items from your original Form 1040 as filed. It doesn’t reflect any later changes, so it’s essentially a snapshot of what you submitted.5Internal Revenue Service. Transcript Types for Individuals and Ways to Order Them If this exists for the year, you filed.
The Account Transcript shows filing status, taxable income, payment types, and any activity on the account after the original return posted, including penalties, amended-return adjustments, and payments applied.5Internal Revenue Service. The Verification of Non-filing Letter is formal proof that the IRS has no record of a processed return for a specified year. Lenders and financial aid offices sometimes require it.
If You Can’t Use the Online Portal
Call the IRS automated transcript line at 800-908-9946. Check Your Own Records Before You Wait on the IRS
Some quick self-checks can settle the question before any transcript arrives.
Look at your bank statements for the year in question. If you owed and paid electronically, the withdrawal usually shows up as “IRS USA Tax Payment” or similar wording.9Internal Revenue Service. Pay Taxes by Electronic Funds Withdrawal A direct-deposited refund typically appears as “IRS TREAS 310” with a code like “TAX REF.”10Taxpayer Advocate Service. TAS Tax Tip: Got a Direct Deposit from the IRS, But Not Sure What It Is For? A refund check from the Treasury, or a cancelled check made out to the U.S. Treasury, works too.
If you used tax software, log back into that account. Most programs store copies of filed returns and keep the electronic acceptance confirmation from the IRS, which includes a 20-digit Submission ID assigned by the e-file system.11Internal Revenue Service. MeF Submission Composition Guide For a paper return sent by certified mail, the USPS receipt with a postmark counts as evidence the return was delivered.12Internal Revenue Service. 26 CFR Part 301 – Timely Mailing Treated as Timely Filing/Electronic Postmark
A Missing Transcript Doesn’t Always Mean You Didn’t File
Paper returns take significantly longer to process than e-filed ones, and no transcript appears until processing is complete. This is especially common from February through May and during backlog periods. If you have a certified mail receipt or an e-file acceptance confirmation, give the IRS additional time before assuming something went wrong.
What to Do If You Confirm You Didn’t File
If the check confirms no return was filed for one or more years, you can still file late. Prepare the past-due return the same way you would an on-time one. Prior-year forms and instructions are available at irs.gov or by calling 800-829-3676.13Internal Revenue Service. If the IRS has sent you a notice about the unfiled year, mail the completed return to the address on that notice rather than the general filing address. And if you’re owed a refund, act fast: you generally have three years from the original due date to claim it, and after that the money is forfeited permanently.14Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 U.S. Code 6511 – Limitations on Credit or Refund
If you keep not filing and the IRS has income information under your Social Security number, it can eventually prepare a Substitute for Return on your behalf. That version won’t include deductions or credits you’d normally claim, so the tax bill is almost always higher than what you’d owe if you filed yourself. You can still file your own return afterward to replace the substitute and claim those deductions.15Internal Revenue Service. 4.12.1 Nonfiled Returns
Expect penalties to accompany late filing when tax is owed. The failure-to-file penalty is 5% of the unpaid tax per month or partial month, capped at 25%, with a minimum penalty for returns more than 60 days late.16Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 6651 – Failure to File Tax Return or to Pay Tax17Internal Revenue Service. What to Do If You Find a Return You Didn’t File
Sometimes a transcript check turns up a return you don’t recognize. That’s tax-related identity theft. If the IRS has sent you a notice about it, call the number on the notice right away.20Internal Revenue Service. Reporting Identity Theft
To formally report the problem and flag your account, submit Form 14039 (Identity Theft Affidavit) online, by mail, or by fax. The IRS identity theft line at 800-908-4490 can also help resolve account issues caused by the fraudulent filing.20Internal Revenue Service. Reporting Identity Theft
To keep it from happening again, enroll in the Identity Protection PIN program. An IP PIN is a six-digit number assigned to your account; no return can be filed under your Social Security number without it. Anyone with an SSN or ITIN can enroll through their online account. If online verification doesn’t work, apply on Form 15227 (available if adjusted gross income is below $84,000 for single filers or $168,000 for joint filers) or schedule an in-person appointment at a Taxpayer Assistance Center.21Internal Revenue Service. Get an Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN) A new IP PIN is issued each year, typically starting in mid-January, and you’ll need to retrieve it annually.
State Returns Are a Separate Check
Everything above concerns federal returns. If you live in a state with an income tax, verifying your state filing status runs through that state’s department of revenue, usually through its own online portal, and some agencies charge a small fee for copies. State penalty rules for non-filing generally track the federal structure but vary. If you’re unsure about both, check each one independently.
