The Earned Income Credit appears on Form 1040 Line 27, and the dollar amount specifically goes on Line 27a in the Payments section near the bottom of page 2.1Internal Revenue Service. Publication 596, Earned Income Credit (EIC) It sits with your withholding and estimated payments rather than with your other credits because the EIC is refundable: it can generate a refund even when you owe no federal income tax.2Internal Revenue Service. What Each Part of Line 27 Does
Line 27 has three parts, and only one of them carries a number. Line 27a holds the credit amount your return calculates. That figure feeds directly into the payments total that determines your refund or balance due. If your software computed a $4,328 credit, $4,328 is what shows up on Line 27a.1Internal Revenue Service. Publication 596, Earned Income Credit (EIC)
Line 27b is a narrow checkbox for clergy members who file Schedule SE for self-employment tax on ministerial earnings. Most filers leave it blank. Line 27c is a checkbox the IRS uses to flag situations where the credit should not be allowed, such as when the filer lacks a valid Social Security number, was a nonresident alien for part of the year, or qualifies as another taxpayer’s dependent.1Internal Revenue Service. Pulling Up Line 27a After You’ve Filed
If you e-filed, open the finished return in your tax software. Most programs let you view or download a PDF of the Form 1040 exactly as it was transmitted, and Line 27a is right there in the Payments section. Paper filers can look at their retained copy in the same spot near the bottom of page 2.
For a prior-year return, or when you want to see the figure the IRS actually has on file, request a tax return transcript through your IRS Online Account at IRS.gov. The transcript mirrors your filed return and shows the Line 27a amount.3Internal Revenue Service. Get Your Tax Records and Transcripts That’s the version to rely on if you need proof of the credit for a loan application or if you suspect your software calculated something incorrectly.
Schedule EIC: The Attachment Behind Line 27a
When you claim the credit with one or more qualifying children, Line 27a isn’t the whole picture. You also complete Schedule EIC and attach it to your Form 1040. The schedule collects the details the IRS uses to verify each child.4Internal Revenue Service. About Schedule EIC (Form 1040 or 1040-SR), Earned Income Credit For each qualifying child you enter their full legal name, Social Security number, birth year, relationship to you, and whether they lived with you for more than half the year.
The name and SSN on Schedule EIC have to match Social Security Administration records. If they don’t, the IRS will either reject an electronically filed return or send a math error notice reducing or removing the credit on Line 27a.5Internal Revenue Service. Handling Processing Errors So if the number on Line 27a looks wrong after processing, Schedule EIC is the first place to check.
Workers claiming the credit without qualifying children don’t file Schedule EIC. Their credit is calculated using the worksheet in the Form 1040 instructions and entered directly on Line 27a.
Why Line 27 Is in the Payments Section
The placement matters. Nonrefundable credits reduce your tax bill to zero and stop there. Refundable credits like the EIC keep going, generating a payment to you.2Internal Revenue Service. Earned Income Tax Credit That’s why the credit lives with withholding and estimated payments rather than with items like the Child and Dependent Care Credit.
Here’s how the arithmetic actually runs. The amount on Line 27a is added to your federal withholding and any estimated payments you made. That total is compared against your tax liability. If the payments-plus-credits number is larger, the difference lands on Line 35a as your refund. Someone who owes $800 in federal tax and qualifies for a $4,328 credit doesn’t just zero out the bill; the remaining $3,528 comes back as a refund. Line 27a is the input that drives that result.
What the Numbers on Line 27a Can Be
The figure on Line 27a is capped by how many qualifying children you claim and by your income. For tax year 2025 (returns filed in 2026), the credit ranges from $649 for workers with no qualifying children up to $8,046 for families with three or more qualifying children.6Internal Revenue Service. Earned Income and Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) Tables The intermediate maximums are $4,328 with one qualifying child and $7,152 with two. If the amount on your Line 27a is above those ceilings for your family size, something has gone wrong in the calculation.
Investment income also acts as a hard cutoff. If yours exceeds $11,950 for tax year 2025, Line 27a should be zero regardless of your wages or self-employment earnings.6Internal Revenue Service. Earned Income and Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) Tables
The Mid-February Refund Hold
One thing to know about any return with a number on Line 27a: the refund gets held. By law, the IRS cannot release a refund on a return claiming the EIC or the Additional Child Tax Credit before mid-February, even if you filed on the first day the IRS opened the season in January.7Internal Revenue Service. When to Expect Your Refund if You Claimed the Earned Income Tax Credit or Additional Child Tax Credit The hold applies to the entire refund, not just the portion attributable to the credit.
The extra weeks give the IRS time to match income on your return against W-2 and 1099 forms from employers, which aren’t due until January 31. Most EIC refunds arrive by late February or early March for e-filers using direct deposit, assuming nothing else on the return needs a second look.
If the Line 27a Amount Is Zero or Missing
If you expected a credit but Line 27a is blank or zero, work backward through the qualifiers. Confirm you had earned income (wages, salary, tips, or net self-employment earnings) rather than investment income alone. Confirm your filing status: married couples generally have to file jointly to claim the credit, with narrow exceptions for certain separated spouses. If you have no qualifying children, confirm you were at least 25 and under 65 at year-end and that no one else can claim you as a dependent.8Internal Revenue Service. Who Qualifies for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) You also have to be a U.S. citizen or resident alien for the entire tax year. A miss on any one of those is enough to zero out Line 27a.
