To track an amended tax return, use the IRS “Where’s My Amended Return?” tool at IRS.gov starting about three weeks after you file Form 1040-X. Processing generally runs 8 to 12 weeks, and can stretch to 16 weeks in some cases.1Internal Revenue Service. Where’s My Amended Return?
What You Need to Log Into the IRS Tool
The online tracker asks for three pieces of information before it will show you anything:1Internal Revenue Service. Where’s My Amended Return?
- Your Social Security number, the nine digits at the top of your original Form 1040.
- Your date of birth, entered as month, day, and year.
- The zip code from the mailing address on your most recently filed return.
Enter each field without dashes or special characters. Every detail has to match IRS records exactly, so pull the numbers off your filed return rather than working from memory. If you moved after filing, use the old zip code. A mismatch returns an error instead of a status. The information you submit is protected under the federal law that prohibits unauthorized disclosure of return information.2Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 6103 – Confidentiality and Disclosure of Returns and Return Information
What Received, Adjusted, and Completed Mean
Once you’re in, the tool places your return in one of three stages:3Internal Revenue Service. Amended Returns and Form 1040-X 3
- Received. The IRS has your Form 1040-X but hasn’t started reviewing it. It’s in the queue. Nothing to do but wait.
- Adjusted. A reviewer has processed your amendment and changed your tax account. The result may be a refund, a balance owed, or no change.
- Completed. Processing is finished and the IRS has mailed a notice explaining the outcome. Any refund is on its way.
Allow 8 to 12 weeks as the normal window. Up to 16 weeks is the outer edge, not the norm.1Internal Revenue Service. Where’s My Amended Return?
E-Filing Speeds Up Tracking
Paper amendments still work, but e-filing removes the mail transit that adds a week or two on each end.4Internal Revenue Service. E-filing also unlocks direct deposit. For amendments to tax year 2021 or later that are filed electronically, you can have the refund sent straight to your bank. Paper amendments always produce a paper check, which adds waiting time on top of slower processing.6Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 1040-X
Common Reasons Tracking Shows No Movement
The biggest single cause of stalled amendments is a mismatch in Column A of Form 1040-X. Column A should reflect the figures the IRS has on file, which are not always the numbers you originally submitted if the IRS previously made an adjustment. Pulling a tax account transcript before filing lets you verify those figures.7Taxpayer Advocate Service. Amending a Tax Return
Two other problems block processing: forgetting to attach the forms and schedules you’re changing, and mailing multiple tax years in one envelope. Each year needs its own Form 1040-X, mailed on its own. These aren’t just delays. They can stop the IRS from processing the amendment at all.
When It’s Been Longer Than 16 Weeks
If the tool still shows “Received” past the 16-week mark, check it once more before calling. The status message will tell you if the IRS is waiting on additional information from you. IRS backlogs occasionally push processing beyond the standard window.
When you’ve waited well past the expected timeframe and normal channels aren’t producing an answer, the Taxpayer Advocate Service can help. Using a Transcript to Confirm the Amendment Posted
The online tracker tells you where the return is in the pipeline. A transcript tells you what the IRS did to your account. Both are free, and lenders and agencies usually accept transcripts in place of a full return copy.
The fastest way to get one is the “Get Transcript” tool on IRS.gov, which lets you view or download the document after online identity verification. You can also mail or fax Form 4506-T and receive the transcript by mail, typically within 10 business days.8Internal Revenue Service. Form 4506-T, Request for Transcript of Tax Return
Pick the right type. A tax return transcript shows the return as originally filed and won’t reflect amendments. To see the changes from your amendment, request a tax account transcript, which shows adjustments made after the original filing. A record of account transcript combines both.9Internal Revenue Service. Transcript Types for Individuals and Ways to Order Them For proof to a lender or agency that the amendment went through, the tax account transcript or record of account transcript is the one to ask for.
Don’t Miss the Deadline to File in the First Place
Tracking only matters if the amendment was filed in time. To claim a refund or credit, you must file by the later of two dates: three years from when you filed the original return, or two years from when you paid the tax.10Internal Revenue Service. Time You Can Claim a Credit or Refund If you filed the original before the April due date, the IRS treats it as filed on the due date for this purpose.
The timing also caps the refund. File within three years of the original return, and the refund is limited to what you paid during those three years plus any filing extensions. File under the two-year-from-payment window, and the refund is limited to what you paid in that two-year period. Miss both deadlines and the IRS keeps the overpayment.10Internal Revenue Service.
