To fill out a Wells Fargo wire transfer request, sign in to Wells Fargo Online, open the Transfer & Pay tab, choose Wire Money, and work through the form: add the recipient’s name, address, bank name, account number, and wire routing number; pick the Wells Fargo account funding the wire; enter the amount; review the summary and the fee; authenticate with a one-time code; and submit. Branch and phone requests ask for the same information on paper or by voice.
Information to Gather Before You Open the Form
The form will not let you proceed without complete recipient details, and a single wrong digit can send your money to a stranger’s account. Wires are difficult or impossible to reverse once processed, so pull these details from a recent bank statement rather than relying on memory.
For a domestic wire, you need:
- The recipient’s full legal name, exactly as it appears on their bank account.
- The recipient’s physical address tied to the account.
- The full name of the receiving bank.
- The recipient’s account number at that bank.
- The nine-digit wire routing number (ABA transit number) for the receiving bank’s wire department. This is often different from the routing number printed on checks, so confirm the wire-specific number with the recipient’s bank.
For an international wire, you also need the receiving bank’s SWIFT code, also called a BIC, which is the international standard identifier for the institution.1Swift. Business Identifier Code Many countries also require an IBAN, a standardized cross-border account number. The recipient or their bank can provide both codes. Depending on the destination country, Wells Fargo may also ask for an intermediary bank name or a purpose-of-payment code.
Filling Out the Request Online
Sign in to Wells Fargo Online, go to the Transfer & Pay tab, and select Wire Money.2Wells Fargo. Wire Transfers – Wells Fargo Online The form walks through a fixed sequence.
Add the recipient. Enter the name, address, bank details, and account number you gathered. For an international wire, the form adds fields for the SWIFT code and, where required, the IBAN.
Choose the funding account. Select which Wells Fargo account the money will come from. The form checks the available balance against the amount you enter later.
Enter the amount. Type the dollar amount you want to send. On an international wire, the form displays the exchange rate and the estimated amount the recipient will receive after conversion.
Review and confirm. A summary screen displays every field along with the fee. Read each line. The account number and routing or SWIFT code are the two fields most worth re-reading, because the bank cannot recover a wire sent to a valid but wrong account.
Authenticate. Wells Fargo uses multi-factor authentication on wires. You will receive a one-time code by text or through an authentication app and enter it to authorize the request.
Submit. After authentication, click to send. A confirmation page appears with a reference number. Save or screenshot it. That page is your proof of the transaction and holds details you may need later if you have to trace the wire.
Filling Out the Request at a Branch or by Phone
If you would rather do this in person, bring the recipient’s banking details and a valid government-issued photo ID such as a driver’s license or passport to any Wells Fargo branch. A banker enters the wire details into the bank’s system, then hands you the authorization to review and sign. The branch fee is $40 rather than the $25 digital fee, and the trade-off is that a banker double-checks your entries before the wire is released.2Wells Fargo. Wire Transfers – Wells Fargo Online
Phone requests use the same fields, delivered by voice. Call Wells Fargo’s wire line at 877-499-6920 and be ready to verify your identity through a series of security questions.3Wells Fargo. Digital Wires FAQs The representative walks through the transaction details with you before processing. Phone wires may need to be set up through a branch or online first, depending on your account history.
The Fee on the Request
Wells Fargo charges $25 for a digital wire submitted through Wells Fargo Online or the mobile app and $40 for a wire initiated at a branch, for both domestic and international outgoing wires.2Wells Fargo. Wire Transfers – Wells Fargo Online Some premium account packages, including Portfolio by Wells Fargo, waive wire fees.
On international wires, intermediary banks that relay the transfer may deduct their own fees from the amount in transit, so the recipient could receive slightly less than you sent. The pre-transfer disclosure Wells Fargo shows before you authorize an international wire lists the estimated amount the recipient will receive after exchange rate conversion and known fees.4Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Cutoff Times That Decide Whether Your Wire Goes Out Today
Submitting the form is not the same as the wire being sent. Same-day processing depends on when you submit relative to Wells Fargo’s cutoffs for digital wires:3Wells Fargo. Digital Wires FAQs
- Domestic wires: 3:00 PM Pacific Time.
- International wires: 2:20 PM Pacific Time.
- Wells Fargo to Wells Fargo: 4:30 PM Pacific Time.
Submit after the cutoff and the wire goes out on the next business day. Domestic wires typically reach the receiving bank the same day they are sent, though the recipient’s bank controls when the funds become available. International wires generally take one to five business days depending on the destination country, the intermediary banks involved, and the receiving bank.
Limits Shown on the Form
Wells Fargo caps digital wire amounts with both a daily limit and a rolling 30-day limit. There is no single published dollar figure; your limit depends on your account type, how long you have been a customer, the specific recipient, and your recent transaction history.2Wells Fargo. Wire Transfers – Wells Fargo Online When you start the digital wire, the system tells you your current available limit before you enter an amount. Wells Fargo can adjust these limits at any time.
If the amount you need to send exceeds your digital limit, a branch wire may accommodate it, since a banker can verify your identity in person.
After You Submit: Confirmation, Tracking, and Canceling
Wells Fargo sends a confirmation to your registered email or through the secure message center once the wire is dispatched. Keep it. It carries the date, amount, fees, and recipient details you will need if a dispute arises.
Check the wire’s progress in the Activity section of the Wire Money page. Each wire carries one of these statuses:3Wells Fargo. Digital Wires FAQs
- Scheduled: the wire has not started processing, and you can still cancel it.
- Pending: the wire is being processed; you can no longer cancel through self-service.
- Completed: the wire has been sent successfully.
- Failed: Wells Fargo could not send the wire, and the funds are returned to your account.
- Returned: the recipient’s bank rejected the wire, and the funds are returned to your account.
- Under review: the wire is undergoing additional security verification, and you may still be able to cancel by calling 877-499-6920.
- Canceled: the wire will not be sent.
While the status shows Scheduled, cancel from the Wire Money activity page or by calling 877-499-6920.3Wells Fargo. Digital Wires FAQs Once the status moves to Pending or Completed, self-service cancellation is no longer available. You can still ask Wells Fargo to attempt a recall, but success depends entirely on whether the receiving bank is willing and able to return the funds. There is no guarantee. Act fast if you spot an error; the first hour matters more than anything after.
The 30-Minute Cancellation Right on International Wires
Federal law adds a protection for international remittance transfers. Under Regulation E, you have the right to cancel an international wire within 30 minutes of paying for it, provided the funds have not already been picked up or deposited by the recipient.5Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Regulation E – Section 1005.34 Procedures for Cancellation and Refund of Remittance Transfers Your cancellation request must include enough information for the bank to identify you and the specific transfer. If you cancel within that window, Wells Fargo must refund the full amount, including the wire fee, within three business days at no cost to you.
Double-Check the Form to Avoid Fraud Losses
The account number and the routing or SWIFT code are the two entries most worth re-reading before you authenticate. Wire fraud often works by getting a legitimate sender to type numbers the scammer supplied.
A common pattern is business email compromise: a fraudster impersonates a vendor, a boss, or a real estate agent and sends “updated” wire instructions. Always verify changed payment details by calling a known phone number, not one taken from the email. Romance and emergency scams push wires to strangers’ personal accounts under time pressure. Overpayment scams send you a check for more than the price and ask you to wire back the difference, and the check bounces days after your wire is gone.
If you realize you have been scammed, call Wells Fargo’s fraud department immediately and ask them to attempt a recall. File a report with the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center at ic3.gov; a report within 72 hours can support efforts to freeze and recover funds. Also file a local police report for your records. Recovery chances drop steeply after the first 24 to 48 hours.
