The Citizens Bank direct deposit form is a one-page authorization you give your employer so your pay lands in your Citizens account electronically instead of arriving as a paper check. Download the PDF from the bank’s Forms and Documents page, fill in your state’s routing number, your account number, and your signature, then hand it to your payroll department.1Citizens Bank. Forms and Documents Deposits typically start within one to two pay cycles, and once they do, you’re automatically enrolled in Citizens Paid Early, which can release funds up to two days before payday.2Citizens Bank. Where to Get the Form
On the Citizens Bank website, open the Customer Service tab and select Forms and Documents. The direct deposit authorization is available there as a printable PDF.1Citizens Bank. Forms and Documents Any Citizens branch can also hand you a paper copy if you’d rather fill it out by hand.
The Two Numbers You Need Before You Start
Have your routing number and account number in front of you before you write anything. One wrong digit sends your paycheck to the wrong place.
The routing number is a nine-digit code tied to the state where you opened your account, not where you live now. Citizens uses a different routing number in each of the 11 states it serves:3Citizens Bank. How to Find Your Citizens Routing Number and Account Number

Filling Out Each Section
Personal Information
Write your full legal name exactly as it appears on the Citizens account. If the name on the form doesn’t match the name on the account, the automated clearing house can reject the deposit. Under that, fill in your mailing address, phone number, and Social Security number. Your employer uses the Social Security number to tie the deposit to your payroll record.5Citizens Bank. How to Set Up Direct Deposit
New Authorization or a Change
Check the box that describes what you’re doing. If you’re moving your pay from another bank over to Citizens, mark it as a change so payroll replaces the old instructions instead of adding a second destination.
Account and Routing Details
Enter the routing number for your state from the table above, then your account number. Indicate whether the account is checking, savings, or money market. Read every digit back to yourself before moving on. If your employer also asks for a voided check or a bank letter as backup, attach it.5Citizens Bank. How to Set Up Direct Deposit
To split your pay between two accounts, use the special instructions or the additional account fields. You can send a flat dollar amount to one and the remainder to another. Some employers have their own split-deposit form, so check with payroll about the format they accept.
Employer, Date, and Signature
Fill in your employer’s company name and address. Date the form and sign it. Federal law requires your written authorization before anyone can set up a recurring electronic transfer into or out of your account, so the signature is not optional.6Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1693e Make a copy for yourself before you turn it in.
Turning It In
Give the completed form to your employer’s HR or payroll department. Some accept it through an internal portal; others want the physical paper. Ask whether they also want a voided check for verification. Once payroll processes it, the switch from paper checks to electronic deposits usually takes one to two pay cycles.2Citizens Bank. Citizens Paid Early During that window, watch both your mailbox and your account, because a final paper check may still arrive.
When the first electronic deposit lands, compare the amount to your expected net pay. If something looks off, call your payroll department first to rule out a data-entry mistake on their side.
Getting Paid Up to Two Days Early
Once direct deposit is running on a Citizens personal checking, savings, or money market account, you’re enrolled in Citizens Paid Early automatically. There’s no sign-up and no fee. When Citizens receives advance notification from your employer’s payroll system, it releases the funds up to two days before your scheduled payday.2Citizens Bank. Citizens Paid Early
The two-day head start isn’t guaranteed every pay period. Depending on when your employer transmits the deposit and what type of deposit it is, you might get paid two days early, one day early, or right on schedule. Bank-to-bank transfers and some payroll glitches won’t trigger early access. Tax refunds sent by direct deposit do qualify. Expect one to two pay periods after setup before the early availability starts showing up.2Citizens Bank. Citizens Paid Early
Mistakes That Send Your Paycheck to the Wrong Place
Using the Wrong State’s Routing Number
Because Citizens uses different routing numbers across its 11-state footprint, this is the most common error. A Connecticut routing number on a Massachusetts account sends the deposit through the wrong processing center. Match the routing number to the state where you opened the account, not where you live now, and pull the number from online banking rather than an old check if you’re unsure.3Citizens Bank. Depositing Into a Closed Account
If you close a Citizens account before updating direct deposit with your employer, the incoming deposit bounces. Returning the funds to the sender takes roughly five to ten business days, and then your employer has to reissue payment, often as a paper check. When you switch banks, get direct deposit active at the new one and confirm a live deposit lands before you close the old account.
Payroll Diversion Scams
A common scam involves someone impersonating an employee by email and asking payroll to change their bank account. The message often uses urgent language and comes from an address that looks nearly identical to the real one. If payroll ever contacts you to confirm a change you didn’t request, call them back using a phone number you already have, not a number in the email.
What About Social Security, VA, and IRS Payments
The same Citizens account and routing numbers work for federal payments, but you enroll through the paying agency instead of using this employer form. For Social Security, update your account through my Social Security at ssa.gov, by calling 800-772-1213 (Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.), or by asking Citizens to submit your information through the SSA’s Automated Enrollment process.7Social Security Administration.
