How to Fill Out Step 3 on W-4: Dependents, Limits, and Filing

Step 3 of the 2026 Form W-4 reduces your federal withholding based on the dependents you support. To fill it out, multiply each qualifying child under 17 by $2,200, multiply each other dependent by $500, add any other credits you expect to claim, and enter the total on Line 3. Only one W-4 in your household should carry these amounts, even if you and a spouse both work.

Sort Your Dependents Into Two Columns First

The form treats dependents differently because the tax code does. A qualifying child is under age 17 at the end of the tax year, lives with you for more than half the year, and does not provide more than half of their own support. Each one is worth a $2,200 credit for 2026.1Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 24 – Child Tax Credit

Other dependents include children age 17 or older, college students you support, elderly parents living with you, and other qualifying relatives. Each is worth $500.1Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 24 – Child Tax Credit Putting a 17-year-old in the $2,200 column instead of the $500 column overstates your credit by $1,700 per child, and you will owe it back at filing time.

Check the Identification Numbers Before You Write Anything Down

Each qualifying child you count for the $2,200 credit needs a Social Security number valid for employment, issued before the due date of your return. An ITIN does not qualify for the child tax credit.2Internal Revenue Service. Child Tax Credit

For the $500 other-dependent credit, the rules are looser: a Social Security number, an ITIN, or an Adoption Taxpayer Identification Number will all work.2Internal Revenue Service. Child Tax Credit If the IRS cannot match the number on your return to the dependent, the credit gets denied no matter what your W-4 showed.

Filling Out Line 3(a), Line 3(b), and the Total

Step 3 has two labeled lines and one combined total.3IRS.gov. Employee’s Withholding Certificate

  • Line 3(a): count your qualifying children under 17 and multiply by $2,200. Two qualifying children is $4,400.
  • Line 3(b): count your other dependents and multiply by $500. One elderly parent you support is $500.
  • Line 3 total: add 3(a) and 3(b), plus any additional credits you expect to claim, such as the child and dependent care credit or an education credit. Write the combined figure on Line 3.

Your employer’s payroll system uses the Line 3 total to reduce your federal withholding each pay period. Two qualifying children plus one supported parent produces $4,900 before any other credits are added in.

The form’s instructions do invite you to fold in other credits.3IRS.gov. Employee’s Withholding Certificate If you pay for childcare so you can work, the child and dependent care credit may apply.4Internal Revenue Service. Child and Dependent Care Credit Information Estimating those extras by hand is the point where most people should switch tools.

Watch the Income Limits

Step 3 tells you to claim these credits only if your total income will be $200,000 or less, or $400,000 or less if married filing jointly.3IRS.gov. Employee’s Withholding Certificate Above those thresholds, the credit phases out by $50 for every $1,000 over the limit.1Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 24 – Child Tax Credit

A married couple with two qualifying children earning $420,000 loses $1,000 of their $4,400 credit ($20,000 over the threshold, divided by $1,000, times $50). Near the phase-out, either lower your Line 3 total by hand or run the IRS estimator to get an exact figure.

Only One W-4 in the Household Gets Step 3

This is where two-earner families most often trip up. If you and your spouse both work, or if you hold more than one job, fill out Step 3 on the W-4 for the highest-paying job only. Leave Steps 3 through 4(b) blank on every other W-4.3IRS.gov. Employee’s Withholding Certificate

Claiming the same dependents on two W-4s doubles the withholding reduction. The couple ends the year under-withheld by the full amount of the duplicated credit, and chronic under-withholding can prompt the IRS to send your employer a lock-in letter that overrides the W-4 you filed.5Internal Revenue Service. When to Use the IRS Withholding Estimator Instead

If you have other credits to add, income near the phase-out, or two working spouses, the IRS Tax Withholding Estimator will do the arithmetic more reliably than you will.6Internal Revenue Service. Tax Withholding Estimator Enter your income, filing status, dependents, and expected credits, and the tool produces a pre-filled W-4 you can hand to payroll. It takes about 15 minutes and settles Line 3 without guesswork.

Submitting the Form and Seeing the Change

Sign the form and give it to payroll or HR. Many employers accept W-4 changes through a digital portal; if yours doesn’t, hand-deliver or mail a copy and keep one for your records.

Your employer must apply the new W-4 no later than the start of the first payroll period ending on or after the 30th day after they receive it.5Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 753, Form W-4, Employees Withholding Certificate Most employees see the change within one or two pay periods. Check your next couple of pay stubs to confirm federal withholding moved in the right direction, and call payroll now if it doesn’t rather than waiting until filing season.

Updating Step 3 When Life Changes

Your dependent count can shift mid-year. A new baby adds $2,200. A child turning 17 drops from $2,200 to $500. A divorce that reassigns who claims a dependent can wipe the credit out entirely. The IRS recommends filing a new W-4 whenever your personal or financial situation changes.7Internal Revenue Service. About Form W-4, Employee’s Withholding Certificate

When the change reduces the credits you can claim, you have to give your employer a new W-4 within 10 days.8Internal Revenue Service. Publication 505 (2025), Tax Withholding and Estimated Tax When a change increases them, there’s no deadline, but filing sooner means the larger paycheck starts sooner instead of arriving as a refund the following spring.

One general rule when you’re unsure: claim a little less on Line 3 than you think you’re entitled to. A smaller refund is a better outcome than a balance due with an underpayment penalty attached.9Internal Revenue Service. Underpayment of Estimated Tax by Individuals Penalty
