How to Fill Out IRS Form 8936 Schedule A: Vehicle and Credit Details

To fill out IRS Form 8936 Schedule A, pull out the seller report your dealer gave you at the time of sale and complete one Schedule A for each qualifying vehicle you placed in service during the year. Nearly every entry on the form (VIN, placed-in-service date, tentative credit amount, and whether you transferred the credit to the dealer) comes directly from that report. Once Schedule A is done, the credit amount flows to Form 8936, and both forms attach to your Form 1040.1Internal Revenue Service. Schedule A (Form 8936) – Clean Vehicle Credit Amount

What You Need in Front of You

The seller report (IRS Form 15400) is the document the form is built around. Your dealer submitted it through IRS Energy Credits Online and was required to give you a copy within three calendar days of submission.2Internal Revenue Service. The report contains the VIN, model year, battery capacity, placed-in-service date, dealer name and EIN, sales price, the certified tentative credit amount, and whether you elected to transfer the credit at the point of sale.4Internal Revenue Service. Part I: Vehicle Details

Everything in Part I is copied straight from the seller report.

Lines 1a through 1c. Model year, make, and model.

Line 2. The full 17-character VIN. Check every character twice. A single wrong digit will cause the IRS to reject the credit, because the VIN you enter is matched against what the dealer filed electronically.

Line 3. The date the vehicle was placed in service, in MM/DD/YYYY format. For most buyers this is the day you took delivery.

Line 4a. Whether you transferred the credit to the dealer at the time of sale. If yes, enter the transferred amount shown on the seller report.

Lines 5, 6, and 7. These route you to the correct part of the form based on the credit type. A new clean vehicle gets a “Yes” on line 5 and sends you to Part II. Line 6 is for previously owned clean vehicles (Part IV), and line 7 is for commercial clean vehicles.1Internal Revenue Service. Schedule A (Form 8936) – Clean Vehicle Credit Amount

Parts II and III: New Clean Vehicle Credit

Part II is a short string of yes/no eligibility questions followed by the tentative credit entry. Most individual buyers use their vehicle entirely for personal purposes, which means Part II mainly funnels the credit through to Part III.

Line 8a. Did you resell the vehicle within 30 days of the placed-in-service date? If yes, the credit is disallowed. The same rule applies to a vehicle returned within 30 days, and a returned vehicle is treated as previously placed in service, so no future buyer can claim the new clean vehicle credit on it either.6Internal Revenue Service. Frequently Asked Questions About Transfer of New Clean Vehicle Credit and Previously Owned Clean Vehicles Credit This line is easy to breeze past, but it is the trap most likely to cost you the credit if it applies.

Lines 8b through 8d. Whether you are filing an individual return and whether your MAGI exceeds the income limits for your filing status. The form points you to the chart on Form 8936 itself for the thresholds. Remember that you qualify as long as your MAGI falls below the limit in either the purchase year or the year before.

Line 8e. Whether you acquired the vehicle for use or lease and not for resale.

Line 9. The tentative credit amount from the seller report. This is the number the manufacturer certified and the dealer transmitted. You do not recalculate it, and you do not adjust it for battery sourcing yourself.

Line 10. The business or investment use percentage. If the vehicle is 100% personal, enter zero.

Part III then calculates the personal-use portion by subtracting any business-use credit from the tentative credit on line 9. If the vehicle is entirely personal, the full tentative credit flows through.1Internal Revenue Service. Schedule A (Form 8936) – Clean Vehicle Credit Amount

If You Transferred the Credit at the Dealership

You still file Schedule A and Form 8936 even if the dealer applied the credit to your purchase price upfront. When You Have to Repay a Transferred Credit

If you transferred the credit and your MAGI turns out to exceed the income limits in both the purchase year and the prior year, you must repay the full transferred amount. The repayment is added to your tax for the year the vehicle was placed in service, reported on Schedule 2 (Form 1040), line 1b, with Form 8936 and Schedule A attached to show the details.8Internal Revenue Service. 2025 Schedule 2 (Form 1040) If your income sat near the threshold when you bought the car, do the MAGI calculation carefully before you file.

Carrying the Credit to Form 8936 and Filing

The credit amount from Part III of Schedule A carries over to Form 8936, which aggregates totals from all your Schedule A forms and applies the tax liability limits. Form 8936 includes a MAGI chart by filing status where you confirm income eligibility one last time.
