How to Fill Out Form W-4P for Pension Withholding

To fill out Form W-4P, enter your name, address, Social Security Number, and filing status in Step 1, then work through Steps 2 through 4 only if they apply to your situation, sign and date Step 5, and send the completed form to the company that pays your pension or annuity. The form tells that payer how much federal income tax to withhold from each periodic payment. If you never submit one, the payer must withhold as though you are single with no adjustments, which is often more than you actually owe.1Internal Revenue Service. Make Sure W-4P Is the Right Form

W-4P covers periodic payments only: installments paid at regular intervals over more than a year, such as monthly pension checks or recurring annuity distributions.1Internal Revenue Service. Form W-4P – Withholding Certificate for Periodic Pension or Annuity Payments

A one-time lump sum, any nonperiodic payment, or an eligible rollover distribution uses Form W-4R instead.2Internal Revenue Service. About Form W-4R, Withholding Certificate for Nonperiodic Payments and Eligible Rollover Distributions IRA distributions payable on demand are treated as nonperiodic and also use W-4R. Nonresident aliens and foreign estates cannot use W-4P at all; separate rules in IRS Publications 515 and 519 apply.1Internal Revenue Service. What to Have in Front of You

Before you start writing on the form, pull together:

  • Your full legal name, current mailing address, and Social Security Number.
  • The filing status you expect to use on your return: Single or Married Filing Separately, Married Filing Jointly or Qualifying Surviving Spouse, or Head of Household.
  • Annual amounts for any other income sources: a spouse’s wages, another pension, interest, dividends, or capital gains.
  • An estimate of itemized deductions, if you plan to itemize.
  • The number and ages of any dependents you plan to claim credits for.

Filing status drives which standard deduction the payer builds into its withholding math. For 2026 the amounts are $32,200 for Married Filing Jointly or Qualifying Surviving Spouse, $24,150 for Head of Household, and $16,100 for Single or Married Filing Separately.3Internal Revenue Service. IRS Releases Tax Inflation Adjustments for Tax Year 2026, Including Amendments From the One, Big, Beautiful Bill Those figures matter later in Step 4(b).

Step 1: Your Information and Filing Status

Enter your name and address in Step 1(a) and your Social Security Number in Step 1(b). In Step 1(c), check the box for the filing status you will use on your return. This single choice sets the tax brackets and standard deduction the payer applies to every payment.1Internal Revenue Service. Form W-4P – Withholding Certificate for Periodic Pension or Annuity Payments Picking the wrong status can throw your withholding off by a meaningful amount over a full year, so if you marry, divorce, or lose a spouse, submit a new W-4P promptly.

If your pension is your only income, you take the standard deduction, and you have no dependents to claim, you can stop here, jump to Step 5, and sign.

Step 2: More Than One Income Source

Step 2 applies when your household has more than one stream of taxable income: two pensions, or a pension plus a job held by you or your spouse.

If you or your spouse also work a job, do not complete Steps 3 through 4(b) on this W-4P. Instead, complete those steps on the Form W-4 for the job.1Internal Revenue Service. Form W-4P – Withholding Certificate for Periodic Pension or Annuity Payments

If nobody is working and you draw multiple pensions, complete Steps 3 through 4(b) only on the W-4P for the pension that pays the most each year. Leave those steps blank on the W-4P for every other pension.1Internal Revenue Service. Form W-4P – Withholding Certificate for Periodic Pension or Annuity Payments

The easiest way to handle Step 2 itself is to check the box indicating multiple income sources, which tells the payer to use higher withholding rate schedules and prevents each payer from treating its own payment as your only income. Step 3: Credits for Dependents

Step 3 lowers the tax withheld to reflect credits for the dependents you plan to claim. You can use this step if your total annual income will be $200,000 or less, or $400,000 or less if married filing jointly.5Internal Revenue Service. Child Tax Credit Multiply the number of qualifying children under 17 by $2,200, multiply the number of other dependents by $500, and put the total on line 3.1Internal Revenue Service. Above those income thresholds, the credit phases out; leave the line blank or reduce the amount accordingly. And remember the rule from Step 2: if you or your spouse also holds a job, claim these credits on that job’s W-4, not here.

Step 4: Fine-Tuning

Step 4 has three optional lines. Skip any that do not apply.

4(a) Other income. Enter the annual total of income you expect that will not have tax withheld, such as interest, dividends, or capital gains. This raises withholding on your pension enough to cover the tax on that outside income.

4(b) Deductions. If you plan to itemize and your itemized deductions will exceed the standard deduction for your filing status, put the difference here. A joint filer expecting $40,000 in itemized deductions would enter $7,800, because the 2026 standard deduction for that status is $32,200.3Internal Revenue Service. IRS Releases Tax Inflation Adjustments for Tax Year 2026, Including Amendments From the One, Big, Beautiful Bill This line reduces withholding.

4(c) Extra withholding. Enter a specific dollar amount you want withheld from every payment on top of what the rest of the form produces. This is the simplest lever if you consistently owe at tax time and want to close the gap.

Step 5: Sign and Date

Sign and date the form. Without a signature the W-4P is invalid, and the payer must keep withholding at the default rate for a single filer with no other entries. The same default kicks in if you leave off your Social Security Number or the IRS tells the payer your SSN is wrong.1Internal Revenue Service. If You Want No Federal Tax Withheld

Federal law lets you opt out of income tax withholding on periodic pension payments.6Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 3405 – Special Rules for Pensions, Annuities, and Certain Other Deferred Income To do it, check the “No withholding” box, complete Steps 1(a), 1(b), and 5, and leave the rest blank.7Internal Revenue Service. a href=”https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/fw4p.pdf” target=”_blank” rel=”noopener”>Form W-4P – Withholding Certificate for Periodic Pension or Annuity Payments The election stays in place until you submit a new form to revoke it.

Where to Send the Form

Do not mail it to the IRS; the agency does not process withholding certificates for private payers.1Internal Revenue Service.
