To fill out Form 8936, complete a separate Schedule A for each qualifying clean vehicle (entering the VIN, the date placed in service, and any credit you transferred to the dealer), then carry those figures to the matching Part of the main form: Part I checks your modified adjusted gross income, Parts II and III handle the new clean vehicle credit split between business and personal use, Part IV handles the used vehicle credit, and Part V handles the commercial credit. The final credit amounts flow to Schedule 3 of your Form 1040.1Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 8936 – Clean Vehicle Credits
File the form even if you already received the credit as a price reduction from the dealer. The return is where the IRS reconciles what you got against what you were actually entitled to, and getting the entries right is what keeps you from owing part of it back.
What to Gather Before You Open the Form
Every line on Schedule A traces back to a specific document. Pull these together first:
- The 17-character Vehicle Identification Number from the driver’s side dashboard or your registration. You’ll enter it character by character, and the IRS matches it against dealer records.
- The seller’s report (Form 15400) the dealer gave you when you took possession. It confirms eligibility, shows the credit amount your vehicle qualifies for, and shows any amount you transferred to the dealer at purchase.2Internal Revenue Service. Clean Vehicle Credit Seller or Dealer Requirements
- The date you actually took possession, not the date you signed paperwork. That is the “placed in service” date.
- The purchase agreement or bill of sale. For a used vehicle, the sale price drives the credit calculation (the credit is the lesser of $4,000 or 30% of the sale price).1Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 8936 – Clean Vehicle Credits
- Your modified adjusted gross income from both the current tax year and the prior year. The IRS uses whichever is lower against the threshold for your filing status.
If you’re missing the seller’s report, contact the dealer before filing. Without it you cannot confirm the credit amount, and a mismatch between your entry and what the dealer transmitted to the IRS is one of the quicker ways to prompt correspondence.
Filling Out Schedule A
You complete one Schedule A per qualifying vehicle. This is where the per-vehicle math happens before the numbers move to the main form.3Internal Revenue Service. About Form 8936, Clean Vehicle Credit
Part I: Vehicle Details
Enter the year, make, and model. Line 2 takes the VIN. Line 3 takes the date placed in service. Line 4 asks whether you made a credit transfer election at the dealer; if you did, enter the transferred amount from the seller’s report.4Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 8936
Parts II Through V: The Credit Calculation
Only one section applies to most filers, and which one depends on the vehicle and how you use it:
- Part II calculates the business or investment use portion of a new clean vehicle credit.
- Part III calculates the personal use portion of a new clean vehicle credit.
- Part IV calculates the previously owned clean vehicle credit.
- Part V calculates the qualified commercial clean vehicle credit.
If you use a new vehicle partly for business and partly for personal driving, you complete both Part II and Part III, entering the business-use percentage on Line 10.1Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 8936 – Clean Vehicle Credits The seller’s report tells you the maximum credit your vehicle qualifies for (either $3,750 or the full $7,500 for a new vehicle), so you don’t have to work out the critical minerals and battery component split yourself.
Filling Out the Main Form 8936
The main form aggregates the Schedule A results and applies the income and tax liability limits. The numbering trips people up because Part I isn’t a credit calculation.
Part I: Modified Adjusted Gross Income
Part I is where the income test happens. Enter your MAGI for the current year and the prior year; the smaller of the two is compared to the threshold for your filing status. If that figure exceeds the limit, the credit zeros out on the relevant lines regardless of what Schedule A calculated.1Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 8936 – Clean Vehicle Credits The new vehicle thresholds are $300,000 (married filing jointly or surviving spouse), $225,000 (head of household), and $150,000 (all other filers). Used vehicle thresholds are $150,000, $112,500, and $75,000.5Internal Revenue Service. Topic B – Frequently Asked Questions About Income and Price Limitations for the New Clean Vehicle Credit
Part II: Business or Investment Use (New Vehicles)
The business/investment portion is treated as a general business credit, which means you also need to file Form 3800 to claim it.6Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 3800 and Schedule A If this portion exceeds your current year tax liability, the general business credit rules let you carry it forward, unlike the personal use portion.
Part III: Personal Use (New Vehicles)
Even a vehicle used 100% for personal driving requires you to work through Part II first before Part III.1Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 8936 – Clean Vehicle Credits Part III walks through comparing your credit against other credits and your total tax. The final personal use amount goes to Schedule 3 (Form 1040), Line 6f.7Internal Revenue Service. Form 8936 – Clean Vehicle Credits
Part IV: Previously Owned Clean Vehicle Credit
The used vehicle credit calculation lives here. The result flows to Schedule 3 (Form 1040), Line 6m.7Internal Revenue Service. Form 8936 – Clean Vehicle Credits
Part V: Qualified Commercial Clean Vehicle Credit
Part V handles the commercial credit, but note the cutoff: this credit is not available for any vehicle acquired after September 30, 2025.8Internal Revenue Service. Commercial Clean Vehicle Credit A qualifying vehicle acquired on or before that date can still be claimed on a 2026 return.
If You Transferred the Credit to the Dealer
Since 2024, buyers of new and used clean vehicles have been able to transfer the credit to a registered dealer at the time of sale, receiving the benefit as a price reduction. You still file Form 8936 with your return for the year the vehicle was placed in service; the form reconciles the advance you received against your actual eligibility.4Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 8936
On Schedule A, Line 4 is where you check that you made a transfer election and enter the dollar amount transferred, taken directly from the seller’s report. If the form’s math shows you weren’t fully eligible (usually because MAGI in Part I of the main form exceeded the threshold), the instructions direct you to report the excess on Schedule 2 (Form 1040), Line 1b. That excess becomes additional tax owed for the year.1Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 8936 – Clean Vehicle Credits
Transferring the credit also reduces the tax basis of the vehicle by the transferred amount, which affects future depreciation for a business vehicle and any gain calculation if you later sell it.
What Limits What You Actually Receive
The personal use portion of both the new and used clean vehicle credits is nonrefundable. It can reduce your federal income tax to zero but cannot generate a refund beyond that. A $7,500 credit against a $3,000 tax liability gives you $3,000; the remaining $4,500 is not refunded and does not carry forward.9Internal Revenue Service. Topic A – Frequently Asked Questions About Eligibility Rules for the New Clean Vehicle Credit The business use portion is more forgiving because it moves through Form 3800 and follows general business credit carryforward rules.
One additional trap for used vehicles: if you resell the vehicle within 30 days of placing it in service, you cannot claim the credit, and any transferred amount must be repaid.10eCFR. 26 CFR 1.25E-2 – Special Rules
Filing and Recordkeeping
Attach Form 8936 and every Schedule A to your Form 1040. Electronic filing through approved tax software is the cleanest path; the software prompts you for the vehicle details and produces the forms. If you file on paper, place Form 8936 in the sequence specified by the return instructions, generally after the main return and its schedules.7Internal Revenue Service. Form 8936 – Clean Vehicle Credits
E-filers generally receive confirmation within 24 to 48 hours. Paper returns can take six to eight weeks during peak season. After receipt, the IRS matches the VIN and seller report data to your entries. Any discrepancy is a common trigger for a notice.
Keep the completed Form 8936, every Schedule A, and the original seller’s report for at least three years from the date you filed.11Internal Revenue Service.
