How to Fill Out and Submit Your SSI Redetermination Form

To fill out an SSI redetermination form, gather your recent pay stubs, bank statements showing the balance on the first of each month, and proof of what you pay for housing, then enter your gross monthly income, current countable resources, and household details on the SSA-8202-BK or SSA-8203-BK the agency mailed you, sign it, and return it within 30 days. Missing that 30-day window can lead to suspended payments.1Social Security Administration. Understanding Supplemental Security Income Redeterminations The redetermination looks at income, resources, and living arrangements only. Whether you still qualify as disabled or blind is reviewed separately.2Social Security Administration. 20 CFR 416.204 – Redeterminations of SSI Eligibility

Gather Your Documents Before You Start

The form asks about three things: what you earn, what you own, and where and how you live. Pull the paperwork for all three before you write anything, because a missing document triggers a follow-up that delays the review and can put payments at risk.

Income Records

Recent pay stubs covering the period the notice specifies. If you receive a pension, child support, or another government benefit, have documentation for those amounts too. Self-employed recipients need records of gross business income and allowable deductions so they can report net earnings rather than the total that came in.3Social Security Administration. If You Are Self-Employed

Bank and Financial Statements

Statements for every checking, savings, and investment account you hold. SSA uses the balance as of the first moment of the first day of each month to decide your resources, so the statement needs to show that specific figure.4Social Security Administration. SI 01110.600 – First-of-the-Month Rule for Making Resource Determinations If a balance spiked mid-month and dropped before the next first, keep the records showing the timeline in case a reviewer asks.

Resource Documentation

Titles or registration for household vehicles, deeds for any real estate you own besides your primary home, and details on any life insurance policies with cash value. The SSI resource limit is $2,000 for an individual and $3,000 for a couple.5Social Security Administration. Who Can Get SSI

Living Arrangement Proof

Lease, mortgage statement, rent receipts, and utility bills. If you share a home, you will need to show how much of the shelter costs you personally cover. This is where accuracy matters most, because it determines whether SSA applies the one-third reduction to your benefit.

What You Do Not Need to Report as a Resource

Several major assets are excluded entirely from the $2,000 or $3,000 limit, so you do not need to list them:

  • The home you live in and the land it sits on.
  • One vehicle, regardless of value, used by you or a household member for transportation.
  • Household goods and personal items, including wedding and engagement rings.
  • Life insurance policies with a combined face value of $1,500 or less.
  • Burial funds up to $1,500 each for you and your spouse, plus burial spaces for immediate family.
  • Property you or your spouse use in a trade or business.
  • Money set aside under a Plan to Achieve Self-Support (PASS) if you are blind or disabled.
  • Up to $100,000 in an ABLE account.6Social Security Administration. SI 01130.740 – Achieving a Better Life Experience (ABLE) Accounts

If an ABLE balance exceeds $100,000, the excess combines with your other countable resources. When the total goes past the resource limit, SSI payments are suspended until you spend down.7Social Security Administration. Understanding Supplemental Security Income SSI Resources

Filling Out the Income Section

Enter your gross monthly earnings, meaning the amount before taxes, insurance, or any other deductions. If your pay has changed since the last review because of a raise, reduced hours, or a new job, report the current figures, not the old ones. Discrepancies between what you write and what SSA finds in its own wage records trigger follow-up inquiries that can freeze your account while the agency sorts things out.

Self-employed recipients report net earnings: gross business income minus allowable deductions and depreciation. Do not include dividends from stock, interest on personal bonds, rental income from real estate (unless you are a real estate dealer), or income from a limited partnership.3Social Security Administration. If You Are Self-Employed If you and your spouse run a business together, each of you reports your own share separately.

Filling Out the Resources Section

List every countable asset with its current market value. Enter bank account numbers and balances exactly as they appear on your most recent statements, using the first-of-the-month figure rather than whatever the account happens to show today.4Social Security Administration. SI 01110.600 – First-of-the-Month Rule for Making Resource Determinations For a second vehicle or non-primary real estate, use the fair market value. You do not need to list excluded resources like your primary home or your one household vehicle, though keeping the documentation handy is wise in case a reviewer asks.

Filling Out the Living Arrangements Section

List the name and age of every person living in your household. Note anyone who has moved in or out since your last review. The form asks how much you personally contribute toward shelter expenses: rent, mortgage, utilities, and similar costs.

This section drives the one-third reduction, which is where many recipients lose money they did not expect to lose. The reduction applies when you live in someone else’s home and pay less than your fair share of shelter costs, or when you live in your own home but someone else covers part of your housing bills.8Social Security Administration. Living Arrangements – Supplemental Security Income In 2026, the federal SSI benefit rate is $994 per month for an individual,9Social Security Administration. How Much You Could Get From SSI so the reduction cuts roughly $331 from a monthly payment. It does not apply if you live alone and pay all your own shelter costs, or if you live only with your spouse and minor children and no one outside the household pays for your shelter. As of September 2024, food is no longer counted as in-kind support and maintenance, so someone buying your groceries does not reduce your SSI.

Sign and date every place the form requires. An unsigned form is incomplete, and SSA will send it back.

How to Submit the Form

You have three ways to return it, and the 30-day clock runs from the date on your redetermination notice regardless of which you pick.

  • By mail, using the postage-paid envelope that came with the form. Simple, but you have no proof of receipt unless you add tracking at the post office. If the deadline is tight, mail is not your best option.
  • In person at your local Social Security field office. You will need an appointment; walk-ins are no longer standard. Ask the staff to date-stamp a copy for your records. SSA’s office locator at ssa.gov shows the nearest location.10Social Security Administration. Contact Social Security
  • By telephone interview. A representative walks through your income, bank accounts, household composition, and shelter costs while you use the form as a worksheet. These calls usually take under an hour.

If you cannot make the 30-day deadline or are struggling with the form, call SSA before the deadline and ask for more time. If you do not respond, SSA follows up by phone or a second written request, and then suspends payments if you still do not respond.11Social Security Administration. After You Submit

An eligibility specialist checks your form and documents for consistency. A bank balance that does not match a statement, a missing document, or an unexplained change in household members will prompt a follow-up. Answering those requests quickly keeps the review moving.

When the review closes, SSA sends a notice. If your benefit stays the same, it is a confirmation letter. If SSA plans to reduce, suspend, or terminate payments, you receive Form SSA-L8155, the Notice of Planned Action, which explains the reason and lays out your appeal rights.12Social Security Administration. NL 00803.015 – SSA-L8155-U2, SSI Notice of Planned Action Your benefit can also go up if your income dropped or your circumstances changed favorably. Keep every notice; you will need the dates and reference numbers if you appeal.

If You Disagree With the Decision

You have 60 days from the date you receive the notice to file a Request for Reconsideration using Form SSA-561-U2. SSA assumes you received the notice five days after the date printed on it.14Social Security Administration. Understanding Supplemental Security Income Appeals Process
The detail worth knowing: file within 10 days of receiving the notice and your benefits continue at the current amount while SSA reviews. Wait longer than 10 days, even if you are still inside the 60-day window, and your payments drop to the reduced amount or stop entirely while the appeal is pending.

If the appeal goes against you, the continued payments become an overpayment SSA will recover, so there is a calculated risk.
