When to Renew
A standard Georgia license expires on your birthday in the eighth year after it was issued.3Justia. Georgia Code 40-5-32 – Expiration and Renewal of Licenses You can renew as early as 150 days before that date. If the license has already lapsed, you still have two years to renew without retesting.
Miss that two-year window and the process resets. Without a valid out-of-state license to fall back on, you’ll take a road sign test, a road rules written test, an actual driving test, and an eye exam, essentially the full battery from your original application.4Georgia Department of Driver Services. What You Need Before You Start
Check the upper right corner of your current license. A black or gold star means it’s already REAL ID-compliant. Federal REAL ID enforcement began May 7, 2025, so a compliant license is now required for boarding domestic flights and entering certain federal buildings.5Transportation Security Administration. If your license already has the star and your name and address haven’t changed, you don’t need extra documents; your current license is enough.6Georgia Department of Driver Services. - Proof of identity and date of birth: a certified birth certificate, valid U.S. passport, or certificate of naturalization.
- Proof of Social Security number: your Social Security card, a W-2, or an SSA-1099 showing the full number.
- Two documents proving Georgia residency: for example, a utility bill, bank statement, mortgage document, or lease agreement showing your current Georgia address.
- Name change documentation if applicable: a certified marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order tying your birth name to your current legal name.

Vision Screening at 64 and Older
Georgia law requires a vision screening at every renewal for drivers age 64 or older. The minimum standard is 20/60 acuity in at least one eye (with or without corrective lenses) and a horizontal field of vision of at least 140 degrees.8Georgia Department of Driver Services. Renewing Online or Through the DDS 2 GO App
Online is the fastest option and saves you $5, but it’s only available if your current license is already REAL ID-compliant.1Georgia.gov. Renew a Georgia Driver’s License Without the star, you have to visit a service center to submit REAL ID documents in person.
Log into the DDS Online Services Portal or the DDS 2 GO mobile app and complete the license application electronically.2Georgia Department of Driver Services. Renewing in Person
Visit any DDS Customer Service Center if you’re submitting REAL ID documents for the first time, processing a name change, or simply prefer handling it face to face. Before arriving, complete the license application through the DDS Online Services Portal or mobile app. Service centers no longer accept a standalone paper application.
Bring your current license and any documents from the checklist above. A clerk verifies your paperwork, takes a new photo, and processes payment. Renewing by Mail
Mail-in renewal is restricted to U.S. citizens who can’t renew in person or online because they’re living out of state. Three groups qualify:
- Military members and their dependents stationed outside Georgia.
- Students attending school out of state and their dependents, limited to one mail-in renewal.

Renewal Fees

After You Submit
Whether the renewal happens in person or online, DDS issues an interim license that’s valid while the permanent card is manufactured and mailed. Allow up to 45 days for the permanent license to arrive at the address on file.6Georgia Department of Driver Services. Military Grace Period
Active-duty service members stationed outside Georgia get a six-month grace period after their license expires. During that window, the expired Georgia license remains valid for driving within the state, and the grace period runs from the date you’re discharged or reassigned back to Georgia rather than from the expiration date.12Georgia Department of Driver Services. Military, Veterans, and National Guard Service members are also exempt from citations for an expired license during this period, though you may need to show military orders or a signed verification from a commanding officer if stopped. Military members and their dependents also have unlimited access to mail-in renewal, unlike students and out-of-state workers.
Driving on an Expired License
Don’t drive on it. Under O.C.G.A. § 40-5-121, a first offense is a misdemeanor punishable by two days to twelve months in jail and a fine between $500 and $1,000.13Justia.
