A GEICO annual mileage verification is a short request to confirm your current odometer reading so the company can check that your actual driving matches the mileage estimate your premium is based on. You can respond in a few minutes through the GEICO Mobile app, by phone, or by mailing back the form if you received one. Doing it on time keeps any low-mileage discount on your policy intact.
What to Have Ready Before You Start
Three things make the submission quick:
- Your current odometer reading. Turn the ignition to the accessory or “on” position so the number is visible on the instrument cluster.
- A clear photo of the dashboard showing that reading. Shoot straight-on, in good light, with no windshield glare, and make sure the digits are legible.
- Your Vehicle Identification Number. The 17-character code is stamped on the lower-left corner of the dashboard (visible through the windshield) and on the inside of the driver-side doorjamb. The GEICO Mobile app can scan the barcode in either spot.1GEICO. VIN
Having all three ready before you open the app or the form prevents the back-and-forth that slows processing.
Submitting Through the GEICO Mobile App
The app is the fastest route. After logging in, look for the verification notice in your documents or policy service area. The app prompts you to enter the odometer reading and upload a dashboard photo, and a built-in camera lets you take the picture without leaving the app.
Check that the number you type matches the number in the photo. A mismatch is the most common reason GEICO sends a follow-up request. Once you submit, the app shows a confirmation message you can keep as proof.
Submitting by Phone or Mail
If you’d rather not use the app, call GEICO customer service at (800) 861-8380 and report the reading to a representative, who can note it in your policy record.2GEICO. Obtaining Proof of Insurance and Insurance ID Cards
Some notices arrive as a physical mailer with a return form. Fill in your policy number, VIN, and current odometer reading, then send it to the address printed on the notice itself. GEICO’s mailing addresses vary by state and by subject, so use the one on the form rather than a general corporate address.3GEICO. Contact Us By Mail Keep a copy or a phone photo of the completed form before you drop it in the mail.
What Happens After You Submit
If your reported mileage still falls inside the range that qualifies for your current discount, nothing changes and your rate holds through the next policy period.
If you’ve driven more than your original estimate, GEICO recalculates your premium to match the higher mileage, and the adjustment shows up on your next billing cycle. The size of the increase depends on the gap between estimated and actual miles, your coverage, and your location, so there isn’t a single dollar figure that applies to everyone. You can also update your estimated annual mileage anytime from your online account to keep the rate aligned with how you’re actually driving.4GEICO. How Your Vehicles Are Used
What Happens If You Ignore the Request
The request doesn’t go away on its own. Without a confirmed reading, GEICO loses the basis for any low-mileage discount on your policy, and the vehicle typically gets reassigned to a standard mileage category, raising the premium. Changes in applicable discounts are one of the factors GEICO lists as reasons a rate can go up.5GEICO. Don’t Shave the Number
Reporting a lower reading than the one on the dash is a bad trade. If you’re later in an accident and GEICO finds a significant gap between what you reported and the actual mileage, the company can deny the claim on the grounds that the policy was rated on inaccurate information. In more serious cases an insurer can cancel or rescind coverage altogether, which follows you into future applications. Knowingly false statements to an insurer can also be treated as a criminal offense under state law, with penalties that scale with the dollar amounts involved. The savings from a few thousand shaved miles aren’t close to worth it.
