The Coursera financial aid application is a short online form you fill out directly on an individual course page. You describe your financial situation and career goals in two essays of at least 150 words each, submit, and wait up to 16 days for a decision. Approval gives you a discount on the course fee and 180 days to complete the coursework and earn a verified certificate.1Coursera. Apply for financial aid
Where to Find the Application
Financial aid isn’t offered on every course, and the link isn’t prominent. Open the course description page before enrolling and scroll to the FAQ section near the bottom. If aid is available, you’ll see it listed under the “More questions?” area to the right of the FAQs. Click “Learn more” next to “Financial aid available,” then “Continue to application” to open the form.1Coursera. Apply for financial aid
One boundary to know before you start: Coursera does not offer financial aid on Specializations as a bundle. If you want to complete a Specialization this way, you apply separately for each individual course inside it, moving on to the next application once a course is finished.1Coursera. What the Form Asks For
The application collects information on your educational background, employment situation, income, and career goals.1Coursera. Apply for financial aid Community forum posts describe an annual income field with a currency selector next to it. If you earn income in a currency other than U.S. dollars, use that dropdown; missing it is one of the most common reasons the “Next” button stays greyed out.2Coursera Support. You don’t upload tax returns, pay stubs, or any other supporting documents. Everything you enter is self-reported. You do agree to the Honor Code and Code of Conduct as part of applying, and Coursera’s Terms of Use require the information you provide to be accurate and complete. Violating those terms can lead to suspension or termination of your account.3Coursera. Coursera Terms of Use
You can hold up to 11 pending financial aid applications at once. As pending applications are approved, you can submit new ones.4Coursera Support. Financial Aid: Is there a limit to financial aid approvals? There is no reported cap on annual approvals.
Writing the Two Essays
The essays are where the case gets made. Each response must be at least 150 words, typed directly into the browser. There’s no option to upload a document.1Coursera. Apply for financial aid
The first prompt asks about your financial circumstances and why you need help. Be specific. Rather than writing generally about not being able to afford the fee, describe what actually makes it hard right now — if most of your income goes to rent and essentials, say so; if you’re a student without steady work, spell that out.
The second prompt asks how the course connects to your career goals. Tie the specific skills the course teaches to something concrete you’re trying to do: a particular job you want, a promotion you’re working toward, a field you’re moving into. Avoid generic language about self-improvement and stay with the real professional outcome.
Both responses need to be your own writing. Submitting plagiarized or AI-generated content violates the Honor Code you agree to when applying. The 150-word minimum is low, so there’s no reason to pad.
Submitting and What to Avoid While You Wait
Once all fields are filled and both essays meet the word minimum, submit. Coursera takes up to 16 days to review, and the application sits in pending status during that window.1Coursera. Apply for financial aid
Do not start a Coursera free trial while your application is under review. Starting a free trial cancels the pending financial aid request entirely. If you’ve already started one and still want aid, cancel the trial first, then reapply once it ends. A canceled application can’t be recovered; you fill out the form and rewrite the essays from scratch.1Coursera. Apply for financial aid
You can audit the course while you wait. Auditing gives you access to lectures and some materials without payment, and your progress is saved. Once aid is approved, you pick up where you left off. If suggested deadlines slip past during the waiting period, Coursera lets you reset them.5Coursera Support. Auditing a course after applying for a financial aid
What Happens After the Decision
Coursera emails you the decision. Approval gives you a discount on the course cost, access to all graded assignments, and the ability to earn a verified certificate on completion.1Coursera. Apply for financial aid
If your application is denied, the email explains why. You can fill out a new application and try again, with no cap on reapplications. If the denial pointed to a weak essay or missing information, address that directly in the next attempt.1Coursera. Apply for financial aid
Approval is course-specific. It applies only to the single course you applied for. For a second course, you submit a second application.1Coursera. Apply for financial aid
The 180-Day Deadline to Finish
Once approved, you have 180 days to complete the course, starting from the approval date rather than from the date you first open a lesson.1Coursera. Apply for financial aid
There’s no formal extension if you run out of time. To keep going after the window closes, you submit a new financial aid application for the same course and go through review again. Starting a course and letting it lapse means repeating the entire application and the waiting period, so it’s worth planning around other commitments before you begin.1Coursera. Fixing Common Problems
The most frequently reported issue is the “Next” button staying greyed out after every field appears filled. Usually a required selection was missed, most often the currency dropdown next to income. Some users have resolved it by switching browsers or devices.2Coursera Support. Coursera Financial Aid Application Form
Another common misstep is applying from a Specialization page instead of an individual course page. Aid isn’t offered at the Specialization level, so navigate into the specific course you want and start the application from there.1Coursera. Apply for financial aid
If a free trial canceled your pending application, cancel the trial, wait for it to end, and submit a fresh application. Your prior form and essays can’t be restored.
