How to Fill Out and Submit the WVU Change of Major Form

To complete a WVU change of major, the path depends on where you are in your enrollment. Currently enrolled students work with their academic adviser, who initiates an Academic Status Update on their behalf. Admitted students who haven’t started classes yet submit a Change of Major Request through the MyWVU Portal. There is no single form every student fills out, and each college sets its own GPA floor for admission into the new program.1West Virginia University Undergraduate Admissions. Change of Major

If You’re Currently Enrolled

Start by telling your current academic adviser you want to switch. Your adviser initiates an Academic Status Update to reflect the new major.2West Virginia University. FAQs The Registrar’s Office makes the ASU available as both a downloadable PDF and an online request form.3West Virginia University. Forms

School of Medicine undergraduate tracks handle this differently. Students email Timmy Eads at timothy.eads@hsc.wvu.edu with their WVU ID number and intended major, and the academic record is reviewed to determine direct-entry eligibility.4West Virginia University. WVU Change of Major

Before your adviser submits anything, confirm you meet the target major’s admissions requirements. Requests will not be processed if you’re ineligible.1West Virginia University Undergraduate Admissions. Change of Major

If You’ve Been Admitted but Haven’t Started Classes

Sign in at mywvu.wvu.edu and find the Change of Major Request option in the top right-hand corner of the portal homepage. Submit at least one week before your New Student Orientation and academic advising appointment so the change processes in time for course registration.1West Virginia University Undergraduate Admissions. Conditionally admitted students are not eligible to submit a change request at all.1West Virginia University Undergraduate Admissions. Change of Major

Switching between a WVU Online program and an on-campus program requires you to work with your WVU Admissions Counselor first. That kind of change affects course delivery format and tuition structure, so the admissions office wants to walk you through the implications before you submit through the portal.1West Virginia University Undergraduate Admissions. GPA and Eligibility by College

The university catalog is direct: admission to WVU does not guarantee admission into a specific college, school, program, or major.5West Virginia University. Requirements vary widely. Current WVU students switching into a Chambers College of Business and Economics major need at least a 2.25 GPA and must be able to take MATH 124. Once declared, upper-level coursework in most business majors requires a 2.5 overall GPA, though Entrepreneurship and Innovation, General Business, and Hospitality and Tourism drop that to 2.0.6John Chambers College of Business and Economics. Admissions School of Medicine undergraduate programs run higher: Communication Sciences and Disorders requires 2.8, Exercise Physiology 2.75, and Immunology and Medical Microbiology 3.0 with progress toward specific biology and chemistry courses.4West Virginia University. Check your target program’s admissions page before starting the process. A request that falls short of the GPA threshold won’t move forward, and you’ll have spent the time for nothing.

Scholarships and Tuition

Scholarship consequences are where a major change catches students off guard. Some college-specific awards for incoming students are tied to staying within designated colleges. The Innovators Scholarship, for instance, is canceled if you change to a major outside the Statler College, Davis College, Chambers College, or Reed College.7WVU Hub. Other Impacts to Scholarship Renewal Institutional scholarship renewal separately requires at least a 2.75 overall GPA and 30 credit hours during the academic year.8WVU Hub. Institutional Scholarship Renewal Requirements A switch doesn’t violate those thresholds by itself, but a move into harder coursework that pulls your GPA down can put renewal at risk.

Tuition can also change. Additional fees may apply depending on the major, and each college carries its own tuition component on top of base university tuition.9West Virginia University. Tuition If you hold any scholarship, contact the WVU Hub financial aid office before finalizing the change. Learning about a canceled award beforehand is easier than seeing it on your next billing statement.

Confirming the Change Went Through

After the change processes, your updated requirements appear in DegreeWorks, accessed through the WVU Portal. DegreeWorks shows every course and objective needed for graduation, including major requirements, electives, capstone, and General Education Foundations requirements.10West Virginia University. DegreeWorks This is where you’ll see which courses from your old major still count and which new requirements you’ve picked up.

STAR, WVU’s academic records system, also reflects the new major and is available through the WVU Portal.11West Virginia University. Access to STAR for Former Students Check both systems after the change. If DegreeWorks still shows old requirements or your adviser assignment hasn’t updated, contact the Registrar’s Office rather than waiting for it to fix itself.

Minors, International Status, and Athletic Eligibility

If you carry a minor, a new major that overlaps with it can force you to drop it, because minors at WVU may not be earned in the same field as the major. Each minor requires at least 15 credit hours, with a minimum of 9 at the 300 level or above, and must include at least 9 credit hours distinct from all other academic credentials. To add, change, or confirm a minor, complete an ASU with your adviser, then also indicate the minor on your Application for Graduation. A minor declared on the ASU but omitted from the graduation application will not appear on your transcript. Music, women’s studies, leadership studies, and ROTC minors require working directly with advisers for those programs.12West Virginia University. Minors

F-1 students have a federal deadline layered on top of the university process. A Designated School Official must update any change to the primary field of study within 21 days so it flows into SEVIS and onto a new Form I-20.13Department of Homeland Security. Program Information Your I-20 states your institution, program of study, and eligibility dates, so an outdated field of study creates a mismatch between your record and your actual enrollment.14West Virginia University International Students and Scholars Services. F-1 Students After the change is finalized, contact WVU’s International Students and Scholars Services office so the DSO can issue an updated I-20. A mismatched I-20 can create problems at the border and may affect OPT eligibility later.

Student-athletes should coordinate with the athletic compliance office before initiating the change. NCAA progress-toward-degree rules require athletes to stay on track toward a specific degree program to keep intercollegiate eligibility. WVU’s internal NCAA certification process accounts for mid-semester changes, but compliance needs to verify the new program doesn’t disrupt the progress timeline.15NCAA.org. Staying on Track to Graduate Talk to your compliance adviser before you meet with your academic adviser. Getting clearance after the fact is harder than getting it beforehand.

If Your Request Is Denied

A denial is usually a GPA problem. Students admitted to the Undergraduate Studies program but denied entry into a particular major don’t need to file a formal appeal. Work on raising your GPA or improving the deficient prerequisite, then coordinate with your admissions representative to update your file to the target major once you meet the threshold.16West Virginia University. Admissions Decision Appeal For enrolled students, the same logic holds: your adviser can point to the specific GPA benchmark or prerequisite course blocking the change, and you can resubmit the ASU once the gap is closed.
