How to Fill Out and Submit the UBA Account Opening Form: Tiers and Channels

To complete the UBA account opening form, pick the account type you want, confirm which KYC tier matches the documents you can provide, then submit the form through one of four channels: UBA’s online portal at aop.ubagroup.com, the UBA mobile app, the Leo chatbot on WhatsApp, or a UBA branch.1UBA Group. Instant Account Opening The information you enter is the same across all four channels. What changes with your choices is how much documentation you upload and how high your transaction limits will be once the account is active.

Pick Your Account Type First

The form’s first real decision is savings or current.2UBA Group. UBA Personal Banking Accounts Savings earns interest and suits money you set aside; current suits frequent business or payment activity. Within savings, UBA offers a few products with different opening balance requirements:3UBA Group. Savings Account – UBA Nigeria

  • UBA Savings Lite (Tier 1): zero opening balance.
  • UBA Savings Account (Tier 3): ₦2,000 minimum.
  • UBA Target Account: ₦50,000 minimum, built for goal-based saving.

If you live outside Nigeria, there is a separate diaspora product with a zero opening balance, covered further down.

Know Your KYC Tier Before You Start

The Central Bank of Nigeria runs a tiered Know Your Customer system that decides both how much paperwork you give the bank and how much money you can move through the account. Your tier is set by how far you take your identity verification, not by which product you pick.4Central Bank of Nigeria. Circular on Tiered KYC Requirements

  • Tier 1 (Basic): daily transactions capped at ₦30,000; cumulative balance capped at ₦300,000.
  • Tier 2 (Standard): daily transactions capped at ₦500,000; cumulative balance capped at ₦500,000.
  • Tier 3 (Enhanced): no transaction or balance limits.

Tier 1 gets you banking fast with the lightest paperwork, but the ₦300,000 ceiling fills quickly once a salary or any small business income starts moving through. If you plan to use the account for anything beyond occasional transfers, aim for Tier 3 from the start, or at least plan to upgrade soon after opening.

Documents to Have Ready

Gather these before you open the form so you aren’t stopping mid-application to find a utility bill.

Tier 1

A passport photograph, your full name, date of birth, gender, and residential address. You also need at least one of two identifiers: a Bank Verification Number or a National Identification Number. Under the CBN’s December 2023 circular, Tier 1 accounts and wallets must carry one of them.5Central Bank of Nigeria. Bank Verification Number

Tier 2

Everything required for Tier 1, plus a government-issued identity card. A national ID card, voter’s card, or driver’s license is accepted.4Central Bank of Nigeria. Circular on Tiered KYC Requirements

Tier 3

Full KYC. A valid ID such as an international passport, driver’s license, or national identity card; a utility bill no older than three months as proof of address; passport photographs; and a BVN linked to your account.4Central Bank of Nigeria. Circular on Tiered KYC Requirements Under the updated CBN guidelines, both BVN and NIN are required for Tier 2 and Tier 3 accounts.5Central Bank of Nigeria. Bank Verification Number

The BVN is an 11-digit number unique to you across the entire Nigerian banking system. If you don’t have one, you can enroll at any bank branch. Without a valid BVN on a Tier 2 or Tier 3 account, the CBN treats your KYC as incomplete, which can mean restrictions on your transactions.5Central Bank of Nigeria. Bank Verification Number

Filling Out the Form by Channel

Online Portal

Go to aop.ubagroup.com, pick your country from the dropdown, and click Get Started.1UBA Group. Instant Account Opening The portal moves through personal details, contact information, account type, and document uploads in sequence. When uploading an ID or utility bill, make sure the image is legible and all four corners of the document are visible. Blurry or cropped scans are a common reason applications stall in review.

UBA Mobile App

Open the UBA mobile app, tap the menu in the top-left corner, and select Open an Account. Pick your account type, fill in your details, and the account number arrives by SMS. Finish the signup inside the app to start transacting.6Google Play. UBA Mobile App

Leo on WhatsApp, Facebook, or Instagram

UBA’s AI assistant Leo can walk you through the opening by chat. In Nigeria, message +234 903 001 0007 on WhatsApp, or reach Leo through Facebook Messenger or Instagram. Send “Hi” and follow the prompts.7UBA Group. Chat with Leo – UBA Nigeria Leo handles basic account types smoothly. For a Tier 3 account with multiple document uploads, the portal or a branch tends to go more cleanly.

Branch Visit

Walk into any UBA branch with original documents and photocopies. A customer service officer hands you the paper form and helps you fill it in, and will compare your original ID against the copies. This is the safest route if you’re uncertain about any field or need to enroll for a BVN at the same time.

What to Enter in the Main Fields

Whatever channel you choose, the form asks for the same core information. Your full legal name has to match your government-issued ID exactly, middle names and spelling included. A mismatch between the form and your ID is one of the fastest ways to get kicked into manual review.

Enter your date of birth, gender, nationality, and current residential address. If you’re going for Tier 3, the address on the form should match the utility bill you upload. The form also asks for your occupation, a working mobile phone number, and an email. UBA uses both for confirmation messages, OTPs, and alerts, so use a number and address you actively check.

At the account type section, pick savings or current, then the specific product (Savings Lite for Tier 1, standard Savings Account for Tier 3, and so on).3UBA Group. Savings Account – UBA Nigeria Expected monthly turnover and source of income fields usually appear for Tier 3 and current accounts. Answer honestly. Inflating expected turnover has no upside and can trigger extra due diligence.

Submitting and Activation

On the portal or app, review every field, confirm your uploads, and submit. In a branch, hand the completed form and copies to the officer. Digital submissions trigger automated checks that cross-reference your BVN and personal data against national databases, and you’ll see a confirmation page or a reference number.

Watch your registered phone and email after submission. The confirmation message usually includes a reference number for checking status. If a name doesn’t line up, a document scan is unreadable, or your BVN can’t be verified, the bank reaches out through the contact details you provided to fix it.

Once verification clears, your account number comes by SMS or email, and the account is active and ready for an initial deposit. The mobile app often produces a number almost immediately. Portal and branch applications can take longer depending on how clean your documents are.

If You Live Outside Nigeria

UBA’s diaspora account is for Nigerians and other Africans living abroad. You have to be at least 18 and living legitimately in a foreign country.8UBA Group. Diaspora Account – UBA Nigeria The opening balance is zero, and you start at aop.ubagroup.com.

The documents are different from a domestic account:

  • Identification: a valid Nigerian international passport, driver’s license, residence permit, or work permit. Alternatively, a foreign passport showing Nigeria as place of birth or country of origin, supported by any Nigerian ID, even if expired.
  • Proof of address: a notarized utility bill from the last two months, or a bank statement from the last six months.
  • Proof of source of funds: a recent pay stub, work ID, reference letter from your current bank, or business registration documents if you’re self-employed.
  • Photograph: one recent passport photo per signatory.

Note the notarization requirement on the utility bill. Domestic applicants submit a plain copy; diaspora applicants must have theirs notarized.9UBA America. Diaspora Account Email completed forms and documents to diasporasupport@ubagroup.com.8UBA Group. Diaspora Account – UBA Nigeria You can also enroll for a BVN from abroad through the diaspora banking team.

After the Account Opens

A new account doesn’t come with a debit card automatically. For a domestic account, visit your branch or contact customer service to request one. For a diaspora account, complete the debit card and indemnity form and email it to diasporasupport@ubagroup.com. A naira debit card costs ₦1,075 inclusive of VAT, with a quarterly maintenance fee of ₦53.75. A dollar card costs ₦1,075 or the dollar equivalent, with a $10 annual maintenance fee. Hardware tokens are ₦2,500.9UBA America. Diaspora Account

If you opened at Tier 1 to move quickly, you can upgrade later through UBA’s self-service portal or at a branch. The upgrade is really just submitting the additional documents the higher tier requires. Moving from Tier 1 to Tier 3 means a government-issued ID, a recent utility bill, and both BVN and NIN linked to the account.4Central Bank of Nigeria. Circular on Tiered KYC Requirements Once the bank verifies the new documents, the limits lift.

If You Are a US Person

US citizens, green card holders, and US tax residents who hold a UBA account have federal reporting obligations that sit outside anything the bank asks for on the form. Two separate rules apply, and they go to different agencies.

You must file an FBAR (FinCEN Form 114) if the combined value of all your foreign financial accounts, including the UBA account, exceeded $10,000 at any point during the calendar year. It’s filed electronically through FinCEN’s BSA E-Filing System, not with your tax return. The due date is April 15, with an automatic extension to October 15 that requires no separate request.10IRS. Report of Foreign Bank and Financial Accounts (FBAR) The $10,000 threshold is aggregate across all your foreign accounts, not per account.

Under FATCA, you may also need to attach Form 8938 to your tax return. For US persons living abroad filing single or married filing separately, the thresholds are foreign financial assets above $200,000 at year-end or $300,000 at any point in the year. For married filing jointly abroad, the thresholds are $400,000 at year-end or $600,000 at any point. US-based filers face lower thresholds. Penalties for missing either filing are steep, so track your UBA balance across the year.
