How to Fill Out and Submit the Target Credit Card Application

You can submit a Target credit card application online at target.com/circlecard, inside the Target app, or at the guest services desk of any Target store. The card is issued by TD Bank, USA, N.A., and most applicants get an automated decision within seconds. When you apply, TD Bank first considers you for the Target Circle Mastercard; if your credit profile doesn’t clear that bar, you’re automatically considered for the store-only Target Circle Credit Card instead.1Target. Which Version You’ll Get

You don’t pick between the two credit cards. TD Bank decides based on your creditworthiness. The Mastercard works anywhere Mastercard is accepted and allows cash advances at a 29.40% variable APR. The store-only card works only at Target stores and on target.com and doesn’t offer cash advances.2Target. Target Circle Card: Credit Rates and Fees Both versions carry the same 5% everyday discount on Target purchases.

One boundary worth flagging: Target also offers a Circle Debit Card that links to your checking account and a Circle Reloadable prepaid Visa. Neither involves a credit check, and neither is what this application produces. If you want the debit card and not a credit line, apply for that product separately.

Who Qualifies

You need to be at least 18, have a valid Social Security number, and live at a U.S. residential address. Target doesn’t publish an income floor, but TD Bank weighs your income against your existing debts when deciding whether to approve you and what limit to extend.

Credit Score

Target doesn’t publish a minimum score either. Applicants with fair credit — roughly a FICO score around 640 and up — tend to have reasonable odds on the store-only card. The Mastercard version generally calls for a stronger profile. Recent bankruptcies, collections, or missed payments make denial more likely regardless of where your score lands.

The application triggers a hard inquiry, which typically drops most scores by a few points and falls off scoring models after 12 months. A stack of recent inquiries from other card applications can work against you.

If You’re Under 21

The CARD Act prohibits issuing a credit card to anyone under 21 unless the applicant either shows an independent ability to repay or has a cosigner aged 21 or older who accepts joint liability.3Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1637 – Open End Consumer Credit Plans In practice, that means younger applicants need enough personal income from a job or similar source to support the credit line. Money from parents generally doesn’t count unless it flows into an account you control.

What to Have Ready

Whether you apply online or in-store, pull this together first:

  • Full legal name and date of birth, matching your government-issued ID.
  • Social Security number.
  • A physical U.S. street address. A P.O. box alone won’t work.
  • Annual gross income from all sources you can reasonably draw on to make payments: wages, freelance income, investments, retirement distributions.
  • Your monthly rent or mortgage payment. TD Bank uses this to gauge your debt-to-income ratio.
  • A phone number and email address for account notices and, if approved, a temporary card number.

The Three Ways to Apply

Online

Go to target.com/circlecard and choose the credit card option.1Target. Target Circle Card: Save 5% at Target Check your income and housing figures before submitting. Transposed numbers or an inflated income figure can lead to denial or a verification request that stalls the decision. The automated review usually returns a result in a minute or two.

In the Target App

Open the app, go to the Target Circle Card section, and follow the same flow. Fields are identical to the website, and if you’re logged in, some contact information may pre-populate.

At Guest Services

Ask at the guest services desk or at a checkout lane. The associate walks you through the application on their terminal and scans your ID. Timing and decision speed match the online process.

After You Submit

Most applicants see an approval or denial within seconds. If you’re approved, Target emails a temporary shopping pass with your new account number so you can use the 5% discount right away, in-store or online. Your physical card arrives by mail, typically within a couple of weeks, though Target doesn’t publish a specific delivery window.

Some applications go into pending status for manual review, which can take up to two weeks. You can’t use the account during that window. Target sends the final decision by mail or email.

If You’re Denied

Federal law requires the lender to send an adverse action notice explaining the specific reasons for a credit-based denial: too many recent inquiries, insufficient credit history, high debt-to-income ratio, and the like. The notice identifies the credit bureau that supplied your report, and you’re entitled to a free copy from that bureau within 60 days.

If you think the denial rested on incorrect information — either something you mis-entered or an error on your credit report — call Target’s credit card customer service at 1-800-424-6888 to request reconsideration.4Target. A general “please take another look” rarely changes the answer.

If the denial stands, work the reasons in the adverse action notice before trying again. Paying down balances, letting recent inquiries age, and correcting credit report errors all improve your odds. Waiting at least six months between applications keeps hard inquiries from piling up.

Rates and Fees Worth Knowing Before You Apply

Both the store-only card and the Mastercard currently carry a variable purchase APR of 28.20%, which moves with the prime rate.2Target. Target Circle Card: Credit Rates and Fees Paying your statement balance in full each month avoids interest entirely.
