To submit a Reddit appeal, use the appeal link inside the ban message Reddit sent to your account inbox, or go directly to reddit.com/appeal if you didn’t get a message. There is no downloadable Reddit appeal form. The process is a web page with a text box where you explain, in your own words, why you believe the suspension or ban was a mistake, plus an option to attach screenshots or documents.1Reddit Help. Where to Find the Form
The path depends on what kind of restriction you received.
If your account was suspended for a policy violation, Reddit sends an inbox message naming the rule you broke and including a direct appeal link.2Reddit Help. Account status overview Open the message and click that link. This is the primary route and the one Reddit prefers, because the link ties your appeal to the specific enforcement action on your account.
If you didn’t get a message but suspect your account is restricted — for example, a suspected shadow ban where your posts are invisible to logged-out users — go to reddit.com/appeal. Content-blocking browser extensions sometimes interfere with the login step, so disable them if the page won’t load.
If your ban was for spam, bot activity, or ban evasion, Reddit may not have sent an inbox notification. In that case, submit a request through the Help Center and choose the category matching your issue rather than using the general appeal link.1Reddit Help. Submit a request
What the Form Asks For
The form is short. You’ll be asked to describe, in detail, why you believe Reddit made the wrong decision, and you can attach any documents or screenshots that support what you’re saying.1Reddit Help. Submit a request There are no checkboxes to categorize your defense and no forced fields beyond the explanation itself. That means the text you write is essentially the whole appeal.
Before you start typing, have a few things ready:
- The username on the restricted account.
- The email address associated with the account, since responses may go there rather than to your Reddit inbox.
- The exact rule Reddit cited in your ban message, if you got one.
- The specific post or comment that was flagged, with the date if you can find it.
- Screenshots of the content in context, if you think the surrounding conversation matters.
What to Write in the Text Box
The explanation is the only part of the process where what you do changes the outcome, so it’s worth writing carefully. Admins and moderators read a large volume of these, and the appeals that get a second look tend to share the same qualities.
Be specific about what happened. Name the post or comment that was flagged, include the date if you remember it, and quote the content when you can. A reviewer who can locate the flagged material quickly and compare it to your explanation is more likely to take a real second look. Vague statements along the lines of “I didn’t do anything wrong” give the reviewer nothing to check.
Address the rule Reddit cited. If the ban message said you violated the harassment rule, write about that specifically rather than defending your account in general. If you believe an automated system misread you, explain what you were actually doing. If sarcasm was read as a threat, say so plainly. If you did break the rule but didn’t mean to, acknowledging the mistake and explaining the context tends to land better than a flat denial.
Keep it to one short paragraph. State what you were banned for, why you think it was an error or a misunderstanding, and — if it’s honest — what you’ll do differently if the account is restored. A focused three-to-five sentence message gets read more carefully than a multi-paragraph defense.
Leave frustration out of it. Complaints about unfairness, criticism of the moderator, or general anger at Reddit take up space that would be better used explaining the facts.
If You Were Banned From a Single Subreddit
A subreddit ban is not a Reddit appeal in the same sense. Volunteer moderators run individual communities, and they can ban you from their subreddit without any involvement from Reddit staff. Your account still works everywhere else on the platform.
When a moderator bans you, you receive a notification through Reddit’s messaging system. To appeal, reply directly to that ban notification through Modmail. That reply goes to the subreddit’s moderator team, not to Reddit admins. Reference the specific community rule at issue, keep the message short, and don’t send a second one if you don’t hear back. Reddit admins generally won’t override a moderator’s decision unless the moderator themselves broke a site-wide rule.
Do not create a new account to get around any ban, whether from a single subreddit or the whole site. Reddit treats that as ban evasion and can extend the suspension to every account involved.3Reddit Help. What is ban evasion?
If You Think You’ve Been Shadow Banned
Shadow bans don’t come with a notification. Your account looks normal to you, but your posts and comments are hidden from everyone else. To test it, open one of your recent comments in a private browser window where you aren’t logged in. If it doesn’t appear, the account is likely shadow banned.
Submit the appeal through reddit.com/appeal. If that page won’t load, file a request through the Help Center under account issues instead. Automated responses sometimes claim the restriction has been lifted when it hasn’t, so verify by checking your profile logged out after you get a reply. If your posts are still invisible, submit another appeal. You can do this once every 24 hours until the restriction is genuinely gone.
After You Submit
Reddit doesn’t publish a response-time guarantee, and there’s no status page for a pending appeal. Some people hear back within a few days; others wait weeks. Replies come through your Reddit inbox or the email tied to the account, so watch both.
If the appeal is granted, the restriction is lifted and the account returns to normal. If it’s denied, the suspension stays in place, but you aren’t necessarily finished. You can file a follow-up through the Help Center by choosing “account status” and then the option indicating your account was wrongly suspended. That routes the case through a different support channel that may produce a second review. A response to this secondary request can take a month or longer.
