There is no downloadable Experian credit freeze form for adults. To freeze your own Experian file, you use one of three channels: an online request through a free Experian account at experian.com/help/credit-freeze, a phone request to 1-888-397-3742, or a written letter you prepare yourself and mail in with copies of your ID and proof of address. The only printable freeze form Experian actually generates is the one used to freeze a minor child’s credit file, which must go in by mail.1Experian. What to Have Ready Before You Submit
The information Experian asks for is the same whether you submit online, by phone, or on paper. Pull it together first so you are not hunting for it mid-request:
- Your full legal name, including middle initial and any suffix (Jr., Sr., II, III)
- Your Social Security number
- Your date of birth
- Every address where you have lived during the past two years
Experian also requires documents that prove who you are and where you live.3Annual Credit Report.com. Security Freeze Basics For identity, a copy of a driver’s license, state ID card, or U.S. passport. For address, a copy of a utility bill, bank statement, insurance statement, pay stub, or tax form showing your current name and address.
If you are mailing in your request, send copies only. Never mail original documents. The online process verifies you through security questions tied to your credit history, so you may not need to upload anything unless Experian cannot confirm your identity electronically.1Experian. Submitting the Freeze Online
The online path is the fastest. Go to experian.com/help/credit-freeze and either sign in or create a free Experian account. Once you are logged in, place the freeze from the security freeze section; it activates in real time.4Experian. Freeze or Unfreeze Your Credit File for Free
Your account also becomes the control panel for every freeze action afterward. Experian no longer issues a PIN to manage freezes. The login credentials replace it, so there is no separate number to store or lose — just keep the account password secure.5Experian. Replacing a Lost Security Freeze PIN Number
Submitting the Freeze by Mail
If you would rather not open an online account, write a letter. There is no Experian template to download; you draft it yourself. The letter should state clearly that you are requesting a security freeze on your credit file, and it should include everything from the checklist above: your full name, Social Security number, date of birth, and two years of addresses.6Experian. Certified mail with a return receipt is worth the small extra cost. You are putting your Social Security number and a copy of your ID in an envelope, and a return receipt gives you both proof of delivery and a timestamp. Experian must process a mailed freeze within three business days of receiving it.
Submitting the Freeze by Phone
Call 1-888-397-3742. Be ready to answer security questions to verify your identity. A phone request follows the same federal timeline as an online request: Experian must act within one business day.
The One Form You Actually Print: Freezing a Child’s File
A parent or legal guardian can freeze a minor child’s credit file at Experian, and this is the one situation where a printable form is part of the process. It must be submitted by mail; there is no online option for minors.7Experian. How to Request a Security Freeze for a Minor Childs Credit Report
Go to Experian’s child identity theft protection page, open the tab for adding a security freeze for a minor, and fill in the online fields. Then click Print Form to generate the hard copy. Mail the printed form together with copies of:
- Your government-issued ID
- A piece of mail showing your current address (utility bill, bank statement, or insurance statement)
- The child’s birth certificate
- The child’s Social Security card
Send it to P.O. Box 9554, Allen, TX 75013, or by overnight delivery to Experian, 701 Experian Parkway, Allen, TX 75013. The freeze goes on within three business days of Experian receiving the packet.
What Happens After You Submit
Online and phone requests are processed within one business day, and in practice the freeze usually activates almost immediately. Mailed requests are processed within three business days of receipt.8Experian. Credit Freeze and Credit Lock: Whats The Difference? Once the freeze is on, it stays on until you remove it. There is no expiration date, and it does not affect your credit score.9Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. What Is a Credit Freeze or Security Freeze on My Credit Report?
Thawing and Lifting the Freeze
When you apply for a loan, a credit card, an apartment, or anything else that triggers a credit pull, the lender will not be able to see your Experian file until you lift the freeze. Log in to your account and choose one of two options:4Experian. Freeze or Unfreeze Your Credit File for Free
- Full removal, which permanently lifts the freeze. You can place a new one any time.
- Scheduled thaw, where you pick a start and end date. The freeze lifts during that window and reactivates on its own afterward, which is useful when you are shopping for a car loan or mortgage over a known period.
Online and phone thaws must be processed within one hour under federal law.10USAGov. How to Place or Lift a Security Freeze on Your Credit Report Mailed thaw requests can take up to three business days, so for time-sensitive applications, do it online or by phone.
One common snag: people forget the freeze is on, apply for credit, and hear back that the lender cannot pull the file. If that happens, log in, schedule a short thaw covering the next few days, and tell the lender when to try again.
What a Freeze Does Not Block
A freeze stops most new inquiries but not all access. Your existing creditors can still review your file for account management, certain government agencies retain access (child support enforcement, for example), any credit monitoring service you have authorized can still see the file, and you can always pull your own report.9Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. What Is a Credit Freeze or Security Freeze on My Credit Report?
The federal freeze right also does not extend to every use of credit data. Employment screening, tenant screening, and insurance underwriting requests are handled differently, and you may need to lift the freeze or provide written authorization if a potential employer or landlord wants to run a credit check.
Cover the Other Two Bureaus
Freezing at Experian only protects your Experian file. Many lenders pull from Equifax or TransUnion, so a single-bureau freeze leaves gaps. Place a freeze at each of the other two as well:
- Equifax: online at equifax.com or by mail to Equifax Security Freeze, P.O. Box 105788, Atlanta, GA 30348-5788.
- TransUnion: online at transunion.com or by mail to TransUnion, P.O. Box 2000, Chester, PA 19016.3Annual Credit Report.com. Security Freeze Basics
Each bureau manages its freeze independently, with its own account and its own thaw requests. The same federal rules apply at all three: free to place, free to lift, and the same processing timelines.
