You can complete the Empower direct deposit form online at empowermyretirement.com, through the Empower mobile app, or on a paper form supplied by your plan. Whichever route you use, you supply the same core details — your name, Social Security number, plan number, and your bank’s routing and account numbers — and then wait for Empower to verify the account with your bank, a step that can take up to 15 business days.1Empower. What to Have Ready Before You Start
Pull these together before you open the form:
- Your full legal name and Social Security number, exactly as they appear in the Empower system.
- Your plan number, printed on quarterly statements and shown on the dashboard after you log in.
- Your bank’s nine-digit routing number, found on the bottom-left of a personal check.2Social Security Administration. Where Can I Find My Account Information?
- Your account number, which is the second set of digits on the bottom of the check.2Social Security Administration. Where Can I Find My Account Information?
No checks? Log into your bank’s online portal or call the bank. Avoid pulling the routing number off a deposit slip, because deposit-slip routing numbers sometimes differ from the one used for ACH transfers. Double-check every digit before you submit. One wrong number can bounce the transfer or send money to the wrong account.
Empower’s direct deposit uses ACH transfers, which work with U.S. bank accounts. If you bank outside the United States, Empower’s materials don’t address that situation and you should contact Empower directly to ask what’s available.
Setting It Up Online
The online route is the fastest and requires nothing printed or mailed. Log in to empowermyretirement.com or open the Empower mobile app, then:1Empower. Empower Direct Deposit Form
- Click Account in the top menu.
- Choose Manage bank accounts on the right.
- Click Add bank account.
- Enter your routing number and account number.
- Follow the remaining prompts to confirm the ACH information.
After you submit, Empower sends the information to your bank for verification. Empower notifies you when verification completes, and from that point your account is ready to receive distributions.1Empower. Empower Direct Deposit Form
Submitting the Paper Form
Some employer plans still use a paper direct deposit or ACH authorization form, and some participants prefer one. The form for your specific plan is usually in the documents or forms library inside the participant portal. If you can’t find it, call Empower participant services and ask them to send a copy:3Empower. Contact Us
- Corporate 401(k) plans: (877) 694-4015
- Government, healthcare, education, and faith-based plans: (800) 695-4952
Fill it in clearly and in ink. The paper form asks for the same information as the online version. If it asks whether your account is checking or savings, mark the correct box, because routing numbers can differ between account types at the same bank. Some plans require a voided check or a bank letter confirming the account; read the form’s instructions before mailing it without that backup.
You can send the completed form back through Empower’s secure document upload inside the portal.4Empower Personal Dashboard Support. Uploading a Document for Empower Personal Cash to Your Document Vault You can also fax it to 1-866-633-5212, or mail it to Empower’s processing center. Mailing addresses vary by plan, so confirm the correct address through your plan materials or participant services before mailing anything. If the processing team can’t read a digit, the form comes back.
How Long Verification Takes
Once Empower has your banking details, it forwards them to your bank to confirm the account exists and belongs to you. That step can take up to 15 business days, though actual timing depends on your bank.1Empower. Empower Direct Deposit Form
A zero-dollar test transaction, called a prenote, is often sent through the ACH network to validate the routing and account details before any real money moves. If the prenote fails because a digit was wrong, the account is closed, or the names don’t match, Empower notifies you and you’ll need to resubmit corrected information. After verification clears, future distributions land in your bank account about one to two business days after the plan releases the funds.1Empower. Empower Direct Deposit Form
Because of this window, set up your banking information well before you plan to request a distribution. Participants who wait until the day they need the money often sit through a frustrating delay.
Spousal Consent Can Apply
Some retirement plans, particularly pension-style defined benefit plans and certain 401(k) plans, require your spouse to sign a consent waiver before certain distributions can be processed. The requirement comes from ERISA and attaches to the distribution election itself, not to the act of adding bank account information.5Internal Revenue Service. Fixing Common Plan Mistakes – Failure to Obtain Spousal Consent Many plans combine the direct deposit form with the distribution request, so if your form has a spousal consent section, it may need to be notarized or witnessed by an authorized plan representative before Empower will process it. Leaving that section blank when it applies is one of the quickest ways to have the form rejected.
Taxes Still Come Out of the Deposit
Direct deposit controls where the money goes, not how much. Federal tax withholding on retirement plan distributions is governed by 26 U.S.C. § 3405, and the headline rules are:6Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 3405 – Special Rules for Pensions, Annuities, and Certain Other Deferred Income
- Eligible rollover distributions paid to you (rather than rolled directly into another plan or IRA) have 20% withheld for federal taxes automatically, and you cannot opt out.7Internal Revenue Service. 401(k) Resource Guide – Plan Participants – General Distribution Rules
- Nonperiodic distributions that aren’t eligible rollovers carry a 10% default withholding, which you can adjust or elect out of.6Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 3405 – Special Rules for Pensions, Annuities, and Certain Other Deferred Income
- Periodic payments, such as monthly installments, are withheld as if they were regular wages.6Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 3405 – Special Rules for Pensions, Annuities, and Certain Other Deferred Income
To avoid the mandatory 20% on a rollover-eligible distribution, ask Empower to transfer the funds directly to another qualified plan or IRA. In a direct rollover, nothing is withheld.7Internal Revenue Service. 401(k) Resource Guide – Plan Participants – General Distribution Rules What hits your bank account is always the after-withholding figure, so plan around the net amount if you need the money for a specific expense.
Mistakes That Get Forms Rejected
Most direct deposit problems trace back to a short list of preventable errors:
- Transposed digits in the routing or account number. Check each digit against your bank’s records at least twice.
- Using a deposit slip for the routing number. Deposit slips can show a different routing number than the one used for ACH. Pull the number from a check, the bank’s online portal, or a phone call to the bank.
- Submitting a closed or inactive account. If you recently switched banks, confirm the new account is fully open before submitting.
- Waiting too long. The verification window is up to 15 business days, so last-minute setup causes delays.
- Missing attachments. If your plan requires a voided check or bank verification letter, a submission without it will come back.
Changing Bank Accounts Later
If you switch banks, log back into empowermyretirement.com, go to Manage bank accounts, and add the new account. The same up-to-15-business-day verification window applies. Keep the old account open until the new one is verified, so you don’t end up with a gap where no account is active for deposits.
