The Edward Jones rollover form authorizes your old retirement plan to move money into an IRA at Edward Jones. To use it, you first open the receiving IRA, then get the correct form from an Edward Jones financial advisor, fill in the old plan’s details along with your rollover election, sign it, and return it with any supporting documents the old plan requires. Edward Jones does not offer a fully self-service rollover workflow; the firm routes the process through its advisors.1Edward Jones. 401(k) Rollover: How It Works and Options
Open the Receiving IRA First
The form needs a destination account number, so the IRA has to exist before you can complete it. Edward Jones offers both Traditional and Roth IRAs for incoming rollovers. A traditional 401(k) or 403(b) typically rolls into a Traditional IRA. A Roth 401(k) must roll into a Roth IRA, and if nontaxable amounts are involved, the transfer has to move directly between trustees rather than passing through your hands.2Internal Revenue Service. Contact an Edward Jones financial advisor to open the account and get the paperwork that matches your situation. If you already have an Edward Jones account, ask whether you can access the form through the online client portal.
What the Form Asks For
Pull your most recent statement from the plan you’re leaving before you start. The form will ask for:
- The full legal name of the financial institution or plan administrator holding your current retirement account, the plan or account number, and the administrator’s mailing address.
- Your Edward Jones IRA account number and account type (Traditional or Roth).
- The dollar amount or percentage you want to move. You can roll over all or part of the balance.
- Whether you want a direct rollover (money moves straight to Edward Jones) or an indirect rollover (money comes to you first, then you redeposit it).
- The type of plan you’re leaving: traditional 401(k), Roth 401(k), 403(b), 457(b), or another qualified plan. Mixing up a traditional account with a Roth account can trigger taxes or hold up the transfer.
Direct or Indirect: The One Choice That Costs Money If You Get It Wrong
In a direct rollover, your old plan sends the funds straight to Edward Jones. No taxes are withheld, and the IRS treats it as a nontaxable event.3Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 413, Rollovers From Retirement Plans The old plan may cut a check, but it will be payable to your new custodian rather than to you.4Internal Revenue Service. Rollovers of Retirement Plan and IRA Distributions
In an indirect rollover, the old plan pays you. From an employer plan, the administrator withholds 20% for federal income tax off the top.3Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 413, Rollovers From Retirement Plans You then have 60 days to deposit the full original amount, including the withheld portion, into your Edward Jones IRA. Say you received $80,000 after withholding on a $100,000 distribution; you have to come up with the missing $20,000 from other funds and deposit the full $100,000. Any shortfall becomes a taxable distribution, and if you’re under 59½ you may owe a 10% early withdrawal penalty on the unrolled amount.4Internal Revenue Service. Rollovers of Retirement Plan and IRA Distributions
For most people, direct is the right box to check. The indirect route only makes sense if you have a specific reason to hold the cash briefly and are confident you can redeposit the full amount in time.
Ask for a Letter of Acceptance Early
Many employer plans won’t release funds until they receive a letter of acceptance from the receiving institution confirming that an IRA is open in your name and ready to accept the rollover. Your Edward Jones advisor can prepare this letter. Request it when you request the form, not after the old plan asks for it. If the old plan requires the letter, the rollover will not process without it no matter how cleanly the rest of your paperwork was filled out.
Signature and Medallion Guarantee
Sign the form using the legal name on file with your old custodian. Some plan administrators also require a medallion signature guarantee, which is a stamp from a participating bank or brokerage that verifies your identity. It’s more common on large transfers and on transfers of securities rather than cash, and you have to get it in person. Ask your old plan administrator whether one is required before you submit, because a missing medallion will bounce the form back and cost weeks.
How to Submit the Form
Once the form is complete and signed, you can hand it to your Edward Jones financial advisor at a branch, mail it to the processing address your advisor provides, or ask about uploading it through the online client portal. Handing it to your advisor is the quickest way to catch errors before the form reaches processing.
What Happens After You Submit
Edward Jones coordinates with your old plan administrator to initiate the transfer once the form is in. Timing depends mostly on the old plan. Some process requests in a few business days; others take several weeks, especially when a letter of acceptance or medallion guarantee is in the mix. Track progress through the Edward Jones online portal or through your advisor. The rollover is complete when the assets show up in your Edward Jones IRA balance.
Deadlines and Limits to Watch
The 60-Day Rule
If you elected an indirect rollover, the 60-day clock starts the moment you receive the distribution. Miss the deadline by a day and the entire amount becomes taxable income for the year, plus a possible 10% penalty if you’re under 59½.4Internal Revenue Service. Rollovers of Retirement Plan and IRA Distributions The IRS can waive the 60-day requirement in limited hardship cases, but that isn’t something to plan around.
The One-Rollover-Per-Year Rule
The IRS limits you to one indirect IRA-to-IRA rollover in any 12-month period.2Internal Revenue Service. Rollover Chart It does not apply to direct rollovers or to rollovers from a 401(k) or other employer plan into an IRA, so if you’re moving a 401(k) to your Edward Jones IRA by direct rollover, this limit isn’t a concern.
Outstanding 401(k) Loans
If you have an unpaid loan against your 401(k), sort it out before starting the rollover. When the plan reduces your balance by the unpaid loan (a plan loan offset), the offset is treated as a distribution, but you can roll it over to an eligible retirement plan to keep it from being taxed.5Internal Revenue Service. Retirement Plans FAQs Regarding Loans Check your loan status with the plan administrator before you start the rollover so nothing shows up on your tax return that you didn’t expect.
Tax Forms You’ll Receive Afterward
Your old plan will issue a Form 1099-R reporting the gross distribution. For a direct rollover, the distribution code in Box 7 will be G and Box 2a (taxable amount) will show zero, which tells the IRS the transfer wasn’t taxable.6Internal Revenue Service. 2025 Instructions for Forms 1099-R and 5498 Expect it by January 31 of the year after your rollover.7Internal Revenue Service. General Instructions for Certain Information Returns
Edward Jones, as receiving custodian, files Form 5498 to confirm the rollover contribution landed in a qualified account, with the amount shown in Box 2.8Internal Revenue Service. Form 5498 – IRA Contribution Information This one doesn’t arrive until May 31 of the following year, well after tax season. The IRS matches the 1099-R against the 5498 to confirm the money reached another retirement account.
If you did an indirect rollover, you still report the distribution on your tax return and indicate that it was rolled over. Confirming the full amount was redeposited within 60 days is what keeps the IRS treating it as a nontaxable rollover rather than a withdrawal.
