How to Fill Out and Submit the Computershare Direct Deposit Form

To set up direct deposit with Computershare, log in to Investor Center at computershare.com/Investor and update your banking details under “Banking & Payments.” Computershare now handles banking updates almost exclusively through the online portal and mobile app, though a printable Computershare direct deposit form is still available for certain stock issuers through the Investor Center forms library.1Computershare. Manage Banking Details Once your account information is on file, dividend payments and sale proceeds land in your bank account instead of arriving as paper checks.

What You Need Before You Start

Gather these items before logging in or printing the form. Missing any of them will stall the process.

  • Your Holder Account Number, which begins with the letter “C” followed by 10 digits. You can find it on your Statement of Holdings or a recent dividend check stub.2Computershare. Account Statements
  • Your bank’s nine-digit routing number, printed at the bottom left of a personal check or shown in your bank’s online portal.3U.S. Bank. U.S. Bank Routing Number
  • Your bank account number, plus the account type. You need to know whether it’s checking or savings, because the ACH network routes payments differently depending on the type.
  • A certified W-9 already on file. Without one, backup withholding of 24% comes out of every dividend or sale payment before it reaches you.4Internal Revenue Service. Backup Withholding

Check every digit of your routing and account numbers twice. A single transposed number can send your payment to the wrong account or trigger a rejection that reverts the payment back to a paper check.

Setting Up Direct Deposit in Investor Center

If you already have an Investor Center login, the process takes a few minutes.1Computershare. Manage Banking Details

  • Log in at computershare.com/Investor.
  • Navigate to “Banking & Payments.”
  • Select the option to edit or add your bank account information.
  • Enter your routing number, account number, and account type.
  • Review the confirmation screen and save your changes.

If you haven’t registered for Investor Center yet, you need your Holder Account Number to create the login before you can reach the banking section. Computershare may also verify your identity during certain transactions, which can include uploading a photo of a government-issued ID along with a selfie.5Computershare. Improving the Shareholder Experience With Enhanced Digital Transfer Service After the change is saved, Computershare sends a confirmation letter or email as a security notice.

Routine banking updates through Investor Center don’t typically require a Medallion Signature Guarantee. That requirement usually comes up when selling or transferring securities, not when changing where a dividend is deposited.6Computershare. What Is a Medallion Guarantee

Using the Paper Form Instead

Some stock issuers still offer a downloadable PDF authorization through the Investor Center forms library. Log in, select your holding, and look under “Other forms & program information” for the form labeled “Direct Deposit for Dividend Payments.” It asks for the same information you would enter online, plus your signature.

Mail the completed form to:

Computershare
PO Box 43078
Providence, RI 02940-3078

Certified mail gives you a tracking number and proof of delivery. Keep a copy for your records. Paper submissions take noticeably longer than online changes because staff have to verify and enter the information manually, so leave more lead time if a dividend payment date is approaching.

If Your Bank Account Is Outside the United States

The standard direct deposit form isn’t used for international payments. When your issuer supports it, Computershare offers InvestorPay, a foreign currency payment service powered by Hyperwallet. You receive an email from Hyperwallet asking you to activate an account, choose your local currency, and enter your bank details through that platform.7Computershare. International shareholders who haven’t submitted a Form W-8BEN face a default 30% withholding rate on dividends. A valid W-8BEN may reduce that rate if a tax treaty exists between the United States and your country of residence.

W-9 and Backup Withholding

Computershare applies backup withholding to dividends and sale proceeds for any U.S. shareholder who hasn’t certified a Taxpayer Identification Number on a Form W-9.8Computershare. Understanding My US Tax Forms The rate is 24%, so nearly a quarter of every payment goes to the IRS before it reaches you.4Internal Revenue Service. Backup Withholding

The same withholding applies if you provided an incorrect TIN or the IRS notified Computershare that you underreported interest and dividend income on a previous return.4Internal Revenue Service. Backup Withholding Setting up direct deposit does not fix a missing W-9. You have to submit the W-9 separately through Investor Center or by mail to stop the withholding.

Timing It Right for Your Next Dividend

Each dividend has a record date set by the company’s board. Only shareholders on the books as of that date receive the upcoming payment, which is issued later on the payment date. For direct deposit to work on a given dividend, your banking instructions need to be fully active in Computershare’s system before that payment date. If the update is still pending, the payment defaults to whatever method was previously on file, which usually means a paper check.

Online updates go through relatively quickly, though the exact timing depends on the issuer. Paper forms take longer because of mail transit and manual entry. Submit your changes as early as you can rather than cutting it close to a payment date.

Why Direct Deposit Is Worth Setting Up

Paper dividend checks that go uncashed create a real problem. After a dormancy period that varies by state, uncashed checks and inactive accounts are classified as unclaimed property, and Computershare is legally required to turn those funds over to the state treasury through a process called escheatment.9Computershare. Escheatment and Unclaimed Property Getting your money back after that means filing a claim with the state, which can take months.

States require a due diligence mailing 30 to 45 days before escheating property, but if your mailing address is outdated, you may never see the notice. Direct deposit removes the uncashed-check risk entirely. Having a distribution credited to a bank account counts as account activity that resets the dormancy clock.9Computershare. Escheatment and Unclaimed Property If you hold dividend-paying stock through Computershare, direct deposit is the simplest way to make sure the money keeps arriving and your account stays active.
