To cancel a Clipper card and get a refund, download the Card Cancellation Form from clippercard.com/forms, fill it out, and mail it with your physical card to Clipper Customer Service at PO Box 318, Concord, CA 94522-0318. Clipper charges a $5 processing fee, paid by credit card on the form or by certified money order, and sends a refund check for your remaining cash value within about 30 days.1Clipper. Clipper Card Cancellation Form A few things can disqualify the refund or slow it down, so check those before you print anything.
Check These Before You Print the Form
Pre-Tax Transit Benefits Disqualify the Card
If your employer ever loaded funds onto the card through a pre-tax transit benefit program, the entire card becomes ineligible for a cash refund, even if you also added personal money separately. This is the single biggest surprise people run into. Any pre-tax value on the card at any point means Clipper will not process the cancellation refund.2Clipper. You Need at Least $5 on the Card
The balance has to be at least $5 in cash value. Below that, Clipper won’t process the refund or charge the fee; the form simply comes back.1Clipper. Clipper Card Cancellation Form
Turn Off Autoload First
If Autoload is on, your bank or credit card can be charged again while the cancellation is still in the mail. Log in to your Clipper account, find the card, and select Manage Autoload from the More Options menu. After you cancel, tap the card at a reader so the change syncs.4Clipper. Automatic Reloading
Lost or Stolen? Block the Card Now
Don’t wait for the mail-in form to protect a missing card. Log in and select Report Lost or Stolen under More Options, or call 877.878.8883, where the automated system handles lost-card reports around the clock for registered cardholders.2Clipper. Account Management Once blocked, Clipper preserves the balance as of the moment you reported it, so any later unauthorized taps won’t reduce your refund.5Clipper. Customer Agreement
Filling Out the Cancellation Form
The form is one page with four numbered steps. It lives on the Clipper forms page under Forms for Cardholder Requests as the Card Cancellation Form.6Clipper. Forms Print it, fill it out by hand, and keep your writing legible. An unreadable entry can hold up processing.
Step 1: Card Serial Number
Write the 10-digit serial number from the back of the card, including any leading zeros. If the card is damaged and part of the number is unreadable, write what you can and add a note.1Clipper. Clipper Card Cancellation Form
Step 2: Your Contact Information
Fill in your full name, billing address, daytime and evening phone, and email. If your mailing address differs from your billing address, enter both. The refund check goes to the mailing address; the billing address must match the credit card in Step 4.1Clipper. Clipper Card Cancellation Form
Step 3: Reason for Cancellation
Check one of the pre-printed reasons or write your own under Other:
- Moving out of the area
- New job
- Change in transportation needs
- Bad service/transit operator
- Not satisfied with Clipper program
- Other
Your choice doesn’t affect the refund. Pick whichever fits.1Clipper. Clipper Card Cancellation Form
Step 4: Pay the $5 Processing Fee
The $5 fee is not deducted from your card balance. You pay it separately on the form by entering a credit card number (Visa, Mastercard, Discover, or American Express), expiration date, and security code, then signing and dating the authorization. The billing address in Step 2 must match this card.1Clipper. Clipper Card Cancellation Form
If you’d rather not send credit card details through the mail, include a certified money order for $5 made out to Cubic Transportation Systems instead.1Clipper. Clipper Card Cancellation Form
Mailing the Form and Card

The form specifically requires the card in the same envelope. A form without the card may not be processed.1Clipper. Clipper Card Cancellation Form If you’re paying by money order, add it to the envelope too.
Use a tracked mail service. You’re sending credit card details and a card that may have real money on it, so delivery confirmation protects you both ways. Photograph or photocopy the completed form before you seal the envelope.
What Happens Next
Clipper processes refunds within 30 days of receiving your package. During that time, the service center verifies your balance, charges the $5 fee to the card you listed (or applies your money order), and mails a check for the remaining cash value.1Clipper. Clipper Card Cancellation Form The check goes to the mailing address on your form, so make sure it’s current. If you move during the 30-day window, call Customer Service to update it.
Transit Passes Follow Different Rules
The cancellation form handles cash value. Refunds for transit passes and stored rides depend on the policies of whichever agency issued them (BART, Muni, AC Transit, and so on), not Clipper.5Clipper. Customer Agreement If you have an active monthly pass on the card, call 877.878.8883 before mailing the form to find out whether that pass is refundable and what the operator needs from you.
When to Call Instead of Mailing
Clipper’s customer agreement notes that refund requests can also come through clippercard.com, the mobile app, or the Customer Service Center.5Clipper. Customer Agreement Calling or visiting is worth it for anything complicated: a card that mixes personal funds and employer benefits, a balance you’re unsure of, or a damaged card with an unreadable serial number.
