To set up direct deposit at Chase, you complete a one-page Chase direct deposit form that lists your name, address, Chase routing number, and account number, then hand it to your employer or other payer so they can send funds electronically through the ACH network on each payday.1Chase. What Are the Benefits of Direct Deposit You can generate a pre-filled version in about two minutes through the Chase app or website, or download a blank PDF and fill it in yourself.
How to Get the Form
Chase gives you two ways to produce the authorization form. The faster path pulls your account details automatically, so the only things left to add are your employer’s information and your signature.
Pre-Filled Form Through the Chase App or Website
- Sign in to chase.com or the Chase Mobile app.
- Select the account where you want deposits to land (checking or savings).
- Open “Account services” by scrolling up in the app or using the drop-down menu on the website.
- Tap “Set up direct deposit form.”
- Download, print, or email the form to your employer.
The pre-filled version already contains your name, account number, and routing number, which removes the most error-prone step.2Chase. Set Up Direct Deposit
Blank PDF
If you’d rather fill everything in by hand, Chase hosts a downloadable PDF on its direct deposit page. The blank form asks for your name, address, city, state, ZIP code, account number, routing number, the name of the business paying you, your signature, and the date.3Chase. Direct Deposit Request Form A checkbox lets you indicate whether the deposit should go into a checking account or a savings/money market account.
What the Form Asks For
Whichever version you use, your employer needs four pieces of information from you: your full legal name as it appears on your Chase account, the account type (checking or savings), your account number, and your routing number.1Chase. What Are the Benefits of Direct Deposit You’ll also supply your employer’s or depositor’s name and address, along with any employee ID your payroll system assigns.2Chase. Set Up Direct Deposit
Sign and date the bottom. Some employers also require your Social Security number or employee ID on the form itself; check with HR before submitting if those fields aren’t obvious. If your employer uses a self-service payroll portal instead of accepting the PDF, you’ll type the same details directly into the system: routing number, account number, and account type.
If payroll asks for a voided check along with the form, write “VOID” across the face of a blank check in large letters. The voided check gives the payroll team a second way to confirm the numbers you wrote match the account.4Nacha. Direct Deposit Without a Voided Check? Absolutely!
Finding Your Routing and Account Numbers
The two numbers that matter most are your nine-digit routing number (which identifies Chase as the receiving bank) and your account number (which points to your specific account). A single wrong digit can send your paycheck to the wrong place or bounce the transfer entirely.
In the Chase App
After signing in, tap the tile for the account you want, then tap “Show details.” Your account and routing numbers appear in the dropdown.5Chase. How to Find Account and Routing Numbers This is the most reliable method if you don’t have paper checks.
On a Check
Look at the bottom of any personal check. The routing number is the first nine-digit string on the left, your account number sits in the middle, and the check number is on the right.
Chase Routing Numbers by State
Chase uses different routing numbers depending on where your account was opened. Common ones:
- California, Nevada: 322271627
- Florida: 267084131
- Illinois: 071000013
- New York (downstate), Massachusetts: 021000021
- New York (upstate): 022300173
- New Jersey: 021202337
- Ohio, Virginia, Maryland, D.C.: 044000037
- Texas: 111000614
- Washington, Oregon: 325070760
- Arizona: 122100024
- Michigan, North Carolina, South Carolina: 072000326
- Colorado, Montana, New Mexico, Wyoming: 102001017
- Indiana: 074000010
- Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa: 075000019
Don’t guess based on where you live now. If you opened your Chase account in Ohio and later moved to Texas, your routing number is still the Ohio number (044000037). The app always shows the correct one for your specific account.5Chase. How to Find Account and Routing Numbers
Splitting Pay Across Accounts
Chase lets you divide a single paycheck across multiple accounts, for example 80 percent to checking for bills and 20 percent to savings. The split is set up during the direct deposit process, where you choose how much goes to each account.6Chase. Direct Deposit: Getting Started You can allocate by fixed dollar amount or by percentage of net pay, though the specific options depend on your employer’s payroll system. Some payroll systems let you name a “primary” account that catches any remainder; others require percentages that add up to exactly 100.
If you want to split deposits, you typically fill out a separate authorization line or a second form for each account. Each entry needs its own account number. The routing number stays the same as long as both accounts are at Chase.
Where to Submit the Form
Hand the completed form (and voided check, if requested) to your employer’s payroll or HR department. Many companies now use self-service portals where you upload a scan or photo of the form or type the details directly into the system. Either path works.
For non-payroll deposits, the Chase form itself isn’t what the payer uses. Instead:

- For federal tax refunds, enter your Chase routing and account numbers when you file your return, whether through tax software, a preparer, or on paper. You can split a refund across up to three accounts.8Internal Revenue Service. Get Your Refund Faster: Tell IRS to Direct Deposit Your Refund to One, Two, or Three Accounts

Federal law requires nearly all government payments to be made electronically rather than by paper check.9eCFR. 31 CFR 208.3 – Payment by Electronic Funds Transfer
When the First Deposit Lands
Expect the first direct deposit to take one to two pay cycles to begin. Your employer’s payroll provider needs to verify the account information with Chase through the ACH network, and that coordination doesn’t happen instantly. During the gap, you may receive a paper check or see a small test deposit (often under a dollar) hit your account. Watch your Chase app to confirm when the first real deposit lands.
Once your direct deposit is active, Chase can make funds available up to two business days before the scheduled payday.10Chase. Secure Banking Benefits and Tools There’s no separate enrollment; the timing depends on when your employer submits the payroll file. Account alerts in the Chase app will notify you the moment the deposit is available.
Changing or Stopping Direct Deposit
To switch your direct deposit to a different bank or a different Chase account, submit a new authorization form to your employer with the updated routing and account numbers. The old deposit instructions get replaced once the new ones take effect. Give payroll at least one full pay cycle of lead time so you don’t end up with a gap where neither account receives your pay.
To stop direct deposit entirely and go back to paper checks, notify your payroll department in writing. There’s no federal law requiring a specific number of days’ notice, but most employers need at least one payroll cycle to make the change. Keep your old Chase account open until you’ve confirmed the final direct deposit has cleared. Closing it too soon can cause the transfer to bounce back to your employer and delay your pay by days or weeks.
If a Deposit Goes Missing or Posts Incorrectly
Start by checking your Chase transaction history. If your employer shows the deposit as sent but it hasn’t appeared after two business days, call Chase customer service and your employer’s payroll department. A single wrong digit on the routing or account number is the most common cause: the money either bounced back to your employer or landed in the wrong account.
Under Regulation E, you have 60 days from the date Chase sends a statement reflecting the error to report the problem.11Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. 1005.11 Procedures for Resolving Errors Once you notify Chase, the bank generally has 10 business days to investigate and resolve the issue. If the investigation needs more time, Chase must provide provisional credit while the review continues, and that extended investigation can run up to 45 calendar days for established accounts. Reporting past the 60-day window means the bank isn’t required to follow these error-resolution procedures at all.
Your Right to Choose Your Bank
Federal law prohibits any employer from requiring you to deposit your wages at a specific bank. Under 15 U.S.C. ยง 1693k, no one can force you to open an account at a particular financial institution as a condition of employment or receipt of a government benefit.12Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1693k – Compulsory Use of Electronic Fund Transfers Your employer can require direct deposit as the payment method in general, but you choose which bank receives the money. If an employer insists you use a specific bank, that’s a violation of federal law.
Many states add further protections. Some require your written consent before an employer can pay you by direct deposit at all, and that consent must be revocable. If you withdraw it, your employer has to pay you by check or another acceptable method.
