To set up direct deposit with Charles Schwab, download the Charles Schwab Bank direct deposit form from schwab.com/resource/schwab-bank-direct-deposit-form, enter your name along with the routing and account numbers for your Schwab Bank Investor Checking account, sign it, and hand it to your employer’s payroll department.1Charles Schwab. Schwab Bank Direct Deposit Form The form is short. The part that trips people up is using the wrong routing or account number, so start there.
Finding Your Routing and Account Numbers
The form asks for two numbers. Both are published on a dedicated Schwab reference page, and both appear in your online account dashboard once you log in.2Charles Schwab. How to Find Your Routing Numbers and Direct Deposit Information
The routing number is nine digits and is specific to Schwab Bank Investor Checking. It is not the same as the routing number used for Schwab brokerage wire transfers, so confirm you are copying the checking-account version.
Your account number is eight digits. To find it, log in at schwab.com, open the Accounts section, and click the account name. The full number appears in the account details at the top of the screen. As of recent app versions, the Schwab mobile app does not display the full eight-digit account number, so use the desktop site if you need it.
If you would rather not look up either number yourself, Schwab publishes a printable reference sheet at schwab.com/resource/find-your-routing-numbers-and-direct-deposit-information that pre-fills both numbers for your account.3Charles Schwab. Find Your Routing Numbers and Direct Deposit Information
Filling Out the Form
Work through the fields in order and double-check every digit before signing.
- Account holder’s name. Use your full legal name exactly as it appears on your Schwab account. A nickname or shortened name can cause the deposit to bounce.
- Bank name and address. The form typically pre-prints “Charles Schwab Bank” and the bank’s address. Verify it matches rather than writing in a branch address of your own.
- Routing number. The nine-digit Schwab Bank checking routing number. Not a brokerage or wire-transfer number.
- Account number. Your eight-digit Investor Checking account number.
- Account type. Select Checking. The Schwab Bank Investor Checking account is a checking account for ACH purposes, even though it is bundled with a brokerage account. Selecting Savings will likely cause the transaction to be returned.
- Deposit amount. Most forms let you choose between depositing your entire paycheck or a fixed dollar amount with the remainder going elsewhere. If this is your only bank account, choose the full amount.
- Signature and date. Your signature authorizes the payer to initiate electronic credits to the account. Payroll departments will not process the form without it.
A single transposed digit in the routing or account field either sends your pay to the wrong place or triggers a return, which can delay your first deposit by a full pay cycle or more.
Submitting the Form to Your Employer
Give the completed form to your payroll or HR department. Many employers now skip the paper form entirely and ask you to type the routing and account numbers into an online payroll portal. The information is identical either way, so keep the Schwab PDF next to you as a reference while you fill in the portal.
Some employers also accept a voided check as proof of your banking details. Schwab’s Investor Checking account comes with checks, but if you do not have any on hand, the printable routing-and-account reference sheet from Schwab’s website often works as a substitute. Ask payroll what they will accept before assuming.
When Your First Deposit Will Arrive
Most employers do not flip the switch on your first electronic deposit immediately. Payroll systems typically send a prenote, which is a zero-dollar test transaction through the ACH network, to verify that the routing and account numbers are valid before sending real money. Under ACH rules, a prenote must go through at least three banking days before the first live deposit can follow.4Hillcrest Bank. Quick Guide – Automated Clearing House (ACH) Rules In practice, many employers wait a full pay cycle or two before switching over completely, and you may receive one final paper check during this window.
Once the first real deposit lands, you will see it as a cleared credit in your Schwab account, usually appearing on or before the scheduled pay date. Log in to the Schwab dashboard or the mobile app to confirm the amount matches your expected pay. If the deposit does not appear on the expected date, give it one additional business day before contacting payroll, since ACH processing windows vary by employer.
If the Deposit Is for Federal Benefits
Social Security, Supplemental Security Income, Veterans Affairs benefits, and other federal payments do not use the Schwab employer form. Federal benefit payments must arrive electronically, and the U.S. government stopped issuing paper checks for most federal benefits after September 30, 2025, except in limited cases.5Go Direct. Go Direct – Home You have three ways to route these payments to Schwab:
- My Social Security online. Log in at ssa.gov and update your direct deposit information with your Schwab routing and account numbers. This is the fastest method for Social Security and SSI recipients.
- Go Direct. The Treasury Department’s program at godirect.gov lets you enroll in or change direct deposit for federal benefits. You can also call 1-877-874-6347 to set it up by phone.
- SF-1199A form. For other federal payments, the SF-1199A Direct Deposit Sign-Up Form is the standard paper form. Fill out Section 1 with your name, account type (checking), and Schwab account number, then take the form to a Schwab branch or contact Schwab to have Section 3 completed and certified. The bank representative must provide an original ink signature, since digital or typed signatures get rejected. Mail the completed form to the paying federal agency.6General Services Administration. If You Only Want a Tax Refund Deposited
You do not need the Schwab direct deposit form to receive an IRS tax refund electronically. Enter your Schwab Bank routing number and checking account number directly on your federal tax return. Tax software prompts you for both; paper filers use the direct deposit line on Form 1040.8Internal Revenue Service. Tell IRS to Direct Deposit Your Refund to One, Two, or Three Accounts
To split your refund between your Schwab checking account and another account, file IRS Form 8888, Allocation of Refund. It lets you direct portions of your refund to up to three different accounts at U.S. financial institutions, including brokerage firms.9Internal Revenue Service. About Form 8888, Allocation of Refund
If a Deposit Doesn’t Show Up
A missing deposit usually comes down to one of three things: a wrong routing or account number, a prenote that has not cleared yet, or a timing delay at the originator’s end. Work through them in that order.
- Verify the numbers you gave payroll against what shows up when you log in to schwab.com. A single wrong digit is the most common cause of failed deposits.
- Check with payroll on whether the prenote was accepted and whether the first live deposit has actually been initiated. Some departments wait longer than expected before switching from paper checks.
- Request an ACH trace. If payroll confirms the payment was sent, ask for the ACH trace number, a 15-digit identifier assigned to every ACH transaction. Give that number to Schwab and either the sending or receiving bank can track where the payment is in the network.
- For a missing federal benefit payment, contact the paying agency directly. For Social Security, call 1-800-772-1213. The agency can initiate a trace through the Treasury Department.
ACH transfers generally process in one to three business days, so a deposit that is one day late is not unusual. If three or more business days pass with no deposit and no returned funds, that is when escalating to a trace makes sense. Keep your Schwab account information current with every payer; outdated banking details after an account change are a common reason benefits get suspended or paychecks get returned.
