The ATB direct deposit form is a one-page authorization that gives an employer, government agency, or other payor the account details they need to send money electronically to your ATB Financial account. It stands in for a voided cheque. You can fill out a blank copy by hand, or generate a version already filled with your account details through ATB’s online banking site or the ATB Personal mobile app.1ATB Financial. Three numbers do the work on the form:
- Your transit number, five digits, identifying the ATB branch where the account was opened.
- The institution number, which is always 219 for ATB Financial.
- Your account number.
They appear on the form in that order: transit, institution, account.2ATB Financial. ATB Financial Direct Deposit Form
Getting a Pre-Populated Form
The fastest route is to let ATB fill in the numbers for you.
From ATB Online Banking
Sign in to ATB Personal, click More in the main navigation, then Account services. Open the Direct deposit/debit form tab, pick the account you want deposits to go to, and click View and print form. ATB generates a PDF with your transit, institution, and account numbers already filled in.3ATB Financial. How to Download a Direct Deposit/Debit Form on ATB Personal
From the ATB Personal App
Open the app, tap the account you want to use, then Account details, then View direct deposit/debit details. Tap View pre-populated form for a filled-in PDF, or View blank form if you’d rather complete it yourself. From there you can share, print, or save it.4ATB Financial. If You’d Rather Read the Numbers Off a Cheque
The MICR line at the bottom of an ATB cheque shows the same three numbers, printed left to right: the five-digit transit, then 219, then your account number.5ATB Financial. How to Find Your Account and Transit Number
Filling Out a Blank Form
If you’re completing a blank copy, work through it top to bottom:
- Name on account. Use the name ATB has on file, not a nickname or the shortened version your employer might use.
- Address, city, province, postal code. Your current mailing address.
- Transit / Institution / Account number. Five-digit transit, 219, then your account number, in the labelled boxes.5ATB Financial. How to Find Your Account and Transit Number
- Direct deposit or direct debit. Tick Direct deposit for incoming payments such as payroll. Direct debit is for pre-authorized withdrawals like recurring bill payments, which is a different arrangement.
- Company name. The employer or organization that will send the deposits.
- Signature and date. Your signature authorizes the payor to credit your account electronically.
The form itself states that it stands in for a voided cheque, so most employers and agencies will accept it on its own.1ATB Financial. ATB Financial Direct Deposit Form Check every digit before you hand it over. A single transposed number can send your pay to someone else’s account, and untangling a misdirected deposit involves both ATB and the sender.
Giving the Form to Your Employer
Submit the completed form to payroll or HR. Many employers accept the PDF through a secure HR or payroll portal, so you may not need to print it. Processing typically takes one to two pay cycles before the first electronic deposit lands, though some payroll systems finish setup in one to three business days. Keep your previous payment method active until you’ve seen the first deposit clear.
If you’re switching from one ATB account to another, get the new form to payroll well before your next payday. Most payroll teams need the change several business days ahead of a pay run to catch that cycle.
Government Benefits Usually Don’t Need This Form
For payments from the Canada Revenue Agency or Service Canada, you generally enrol online rather than sending in the ATB form.
For CRA payments such as tax refunds, GST/HST credits, and the Canada Child Benefit, sign in to CRA My Account, open your individual profile, choose Direct deposit under the Profile section, and enter your ATB details. The CRA updates your banking information the next business day.6Canada.ca. Direct Deposit for Individuals – Payments the CRA Sends You
For Canada Pension Plan, Old Age Security, and Employment Insurance, enrol through My Service Canada Account or at a Service Canada office. You’ll need your social insurance number, the institution name (ATB Financial), your transit number, and your account number.7Canada.ca. Direct Deposit for Service Canada If you don’t have a cheque, pull those numbers from ATB online banking or the app.
Changing or Cancelling Direct Deposit Later
When you switch accounts (or banks), you’ll need to send an updated form or update your details with every organization that pays you. Your employer, the CRA, and Service Canada each hold your banking information separately, so a change with one doesn’t reach the others. Leave the old account open and funded until you’ve confirmed each payor is depositing into the new one. Closing too early can bounce deposits back to the sender, delaying your payment by days or weeks depending on how the sender reprocesses returned payments.
To stop direct deposit and go back to cheques, tell payroll in writing. For CRA payments, change the setting in My Account. For Service Canada benefits, call or visit a Service Canada office.
