DAF Form 1288, the Application for Ready Reserve Assignment, is how Air Force and Space Force members request a move into or between positions in the Air Reserve Component. You fill out Section I yourself, your losing commander signs Section II, and the gaining unit completes Sections III and IV before a recruiter, RIO Detachment, Military Personnel Section, or Force Support Squadron sends the package to the Air Reserve Personnel Center through myPers. Pull the current version from the Department of the Air Force e-Publishing site or myFSS — the latest edition asks for a DoD ID number rather than a Social Security number, and ARPC may bounce a package built on a superseded form.
When to Use the Form
DAF Form 1288 covers several reserve-side career moves. The most common are the two Palace programs for active-duty airmen:
- Palace Chase is a voluntary early-release program for active-duty airmen who have completed at least half their initial service commitment (two-thirds for officers). You leave active duty early in exchange for a longer reserve obligation.1Air Force Accessions Center. PALACE CHASE / FRONT Brochure
- Palace Front is for active-duty members within six months of their approved Date of Separation who want a seamless transfer into a Selected Reserve position. It does not shorten your active-duty commitment; it lines up a reserve slot so there’s no gap in service.1Air Force Accessions Center. PALACE CHASE / FRONT Brochure
- Members in the Individual Ready Reserve who find a vacant position in a drilling unit use the form to request that assignment.
- Individual Reservists moving between positions — inside the same wing or across commands — use it to document losing and gaining approval.
If a Palace Chase or Palace Front assignment isn’t projected before separation and the member ends up in the IRR or a temporary holding code, the servicing recruiter or gaining organization can still submit the request to ARPC using the DAF Form 1288 and AF Form 100 as source documents.2Air Reserve Personnel Center. Air Force Instruction 36-2629 – Individual Reservist Management AFI 36-2115 imposes a six-month wait on voluntary assignment requests for Individual Reservists, so you generally cannot submit a new transfer within six months of arriving at your current position.
Gather These Documents First
Assembling the supporting package before you open the form keeps you from stalling halfway through. For an Individual Reservist assignment, the standard package includes a signed DAF Form 1288, a resume, and your three most recent Officer Performance Reports or Enlisted Performance Reports. Individual positions may require more — check the Reserve Management Vacancy System listing or contact the point of contact for that unit.4Headquarters RIO. IR Assignment Process
Have the following on hand:
- AF Form 422 (Physical Profile Serial Report), current within twelve months, certifying your PULHES profile.
- Your last fitness assessment date. Air Reserve Component members test every twelve months.5Department of the Air Force. DAFMAN 36-2905 – Air Force Physical Fitness Readiness Program
- Security clearance level and date. You’ll enter both in Section I (fields 13–14).6Department of the Air Force. DAF Form 1288 – Application for Ready Reserve Assignment
- Your Primary, Secondary, and Tertiary AFSCs (field 9), plus the duty AFSC for the position you’re seeking (field 12).6Department of the Air Force. DAF Form 1288 – Application for Ready Reserve Assignment
- Unit identifiers: full designation, MAJCOM or Field Command, and location for both your current assignment (field 10) and the unit you want to join (field 11).
How to Fill Out Section I
Section I is the only section the applicant completes. The printed instructions on the form assign the applicant to Section I, the losing commander to Section II, the gaining Force Support unit to Section III, and the gaining organization commander to Section IV.6Department of the Air Force. DAF Form 1288 – Application for Ready Reserve Assignment
Start with identification: full legal name (last, first, middle), grade, DoD ID number, primary phone, mailing address, military email, and a personal email. If you know your future address — for example, you’re relocating after leaving active duty — enter both current and future addresses in field 5.6Department of the Air Force. DAF Form 1288 – Application for Ready Reserve Assignment
Below the identification block, the form asks for your current member status, AFSCs, unit information, and security clearance. Field 15 asks rated officers whether flight hours and instrument data have been provided. Field 16 asks whether you’re currently receiving a bonus. Answer field 16 honestly; it drives a financial review covered further down. Field 17 wants your last fitness assessment date.
The bottom of Section I is a stack of certification statements you affirm by signing. They cover Medical Evaluation Board status, physical conditions, Government Travel Card standing, disciplinary history, civilian employment status, outstanding service commitments, readiness standards, retraining requirements, VA compensation status, responsibility for travel costs, and whether you’ve notified your civilian employer.6Department of the Air Force. DAF Form 1288 – Application for Ready Reserve Assignment Read each one before signing. Misrepresenting any of these can stall or kill the transfer.
What the Losing and Gaining Units Add
You don’t fill out Sections II through IV, but knowing what each requires helps you anticipate questions and keep the package moving.
Section II — Losing Organization
Your current commander, RIO Detachment commander, or recruiter certifies whether your records are accurate, confirms you’re in good standing with no pending adverse actions, verifies your health and fitness status, and recommends (or declines to recommend) your release.6Department of the Air Force. DAF Form 1288 – Application for Ready Reserve Assignment A losing commander who won’t sign is often the single biggest obstacle to a transfer. If you expect resistance, have a candid conversation with leadership before the form reaches their desk. Field 26 gives them a remarks block for context, and Host Aviation Resource Management signs separately when applicable.
Section III — Gaining Support Unit or RIO Detachment
The gaining unit’s MPF, Force Support Squadron, AFELM, or RIO Detachment enters the position details: authorized grade, duty AFSC or Space Force Specialty Code, position number, PAS codes, security clearance required, whether retraining is needed, and any grade or overage waivers.6Department of the Air Force. DAF Form 1288 – Application for Ready Reserve Assignment This is administrative coding that feeds the Military Personnel Data System.
Section IV — Gaining Organization Commander
The gaining commander or designee makes the selection decision: selected, not selected (with a required justification in field 64), or selected as an overage, overgrade, or undergrade.6Department of the Air Force. Submitting the Package
Once all four sections are signed, the completed package goes to ARPC’s Assignments section (ARPC/DPAA) through myPers. ARPC accepts submissions from RIO Detachments, recruiters, MPSs, or Force Support Squadrons. Individual members cannot submit their own packages.7Air Reserve Personnel Center. Individual Reservist Assignment Processing Confirmation usually arrives as official orders or an updated personnel record showing your new duty start date. Stay in contact with the submitting office throughout. Waiting quietly for 60 days is how requests get closed without action.
Watch the Bonus Question
Field 16 asks whether you’re currently receiving a bonus. If you are, transferring units or changing reserve categories can trigger recoupment: you may owe back part or all of an enlistment, affiliation, or retention bonus. The FY2026 Air Force Reserve Incentive Guide assigns the Wing Talent Management Consultant, working with Finance Management, to monitor bonus eligibility and initiate any termination or recoupment.8Air Force Reserve Command. Air Force Reserve FY2026 Officer/Enlisted Incentive Program
Under DoD Financial Management Regulation Volume 7A, Chapter 56, a member who receives a Selected Reserve bonus and then fails to complete the service term or does not satisfactorily participate for the full obligation must repay the unearned portion under 37 U.S.C. § 373.9Department of Defense. Financial Management Regulation Volume 7A, Chapter 56 That covers enlistment, affiliation, selective retention, and transfer bonuses alike. Before signing, ask your Wing Talent Management Consultant what you’d owe. A lateral move between drilling units in the same component may not trigger recoupment; moving from a bonus-eligible position to one that isn’t, or from the Selected Reserve to the IRR, almost certainly will.
Extra Step for Officers
Regular commissioned officers moving from active duty to a reserve officer status need Secretary of Defense approval. The member and a recruiter must submit a nomination to be placed on a scroll for SECDEF approval, and that approval must come through before the separation date.10Air Reserve Personnel Center. Accessions Start early. Rated officers should also confirm their flying records are current before the package ships; a missing flight-hours entry against field 15 is exactly the kind of gap that puts a package in ARPC’s 60-day limbo.
Mistakes That Delay Processing
Most packages that stall do so for preventable reasons. The form references a completion guide hosted on myFSS — search “DAF Form 1288” within the portal to pull it up.6Department of the Air Force. DAF Form 1288 – Application for Ready Reserve Assignment Watch for these:
- Using an outdated version. Older editions asked for a Social Security number; the current form asks for a DoD ID number. ARPC may reject a package built on a superseded form.
- Missing endorsements. All four sections must be signed in order. A package arriving without the losing commander’s signature in Section II or the gaining commander’s decision in Section IV goes into the incomplete pile.
- Incomplete certification statements. The Section I certification block covers more than a dozen topics. Any unanswered item gives the reviewer a reason to bounce the package.
- Answering the bonus question wrong. Marking “No” on field 16 when you’re actually drawing a bonus does not make recoupment go away. It creates a debt you didn’t plan for and a credibility problem in your file.
- Submitting directly to ARPC. The submission has to come from a RIO Detachment, recruiter, MPS, or FSS.7Air Reserve Personnel Center. Individual Reservist Assignment Processing
Track the package through whoever submitted it. If ARPC hasn’t acted within 14 business days, something needs attention.
