How to Fill Out and Submit a Citibank Account Closure Form

To close a personal account by mail, submit a signed Citibank account closure form or a signed written request to Citibank Client Services, P.O. Box 769004, San Antonio, TX 78245-9989. You can ask Citibank to mail you the form by calling 1-888-CITIBANK, or you can write your own closure letter that includes the same information. Either document works, as long as it carries the signatures the bank needs and tells them where to send your remaining balance.

Prepare the Account Before You Submit

Sort out the money flow first. If a direct deposit hits a closed account, your paycheck bounces back to your employer and takes days to recover. If an automatic bill payment tries to pull from a closed account, you risk late fees and service interruptions. Review at least 30 days of transaction history to identify every recurring deposit and payment, update your direct deposit with your employer, and move automatic payments to your new account. Give those changes one full billing cycle before you send the closure request.

Wait for pending transactions and outstanding checks to clear. Closing the account while a check is still floating causes it to bounce, and a resulting negative balance on a closed account can be sent to collections, damage your credit, and show up on bank-account history reports like ChexSystems, which makes opening accounts elsewhere harder.

What the Form or Letter Must Contain

Whether you use Citibank’s form or write your own letter, include all of the following:

  • Full legal names of every person on the account, exactly as they appear in the bank’s records.
  • The complete account number for each account you want to close, whether checking, savings, or CD.
  • A current phone number and email address so the bank can reach you if something is unresolved.
  • Disbursement instructions: either the routing and account number for an external “pay-to” account, or a mailing address where Citibank should send a cashier’s check for the final balance.
  • A clear statement that you are requesting closure, and the signatures of all account holders.

For joint accounts, every owner has to sign. One owner’s signature alone will not authorize the closure of shared assets. Missing or mismatched information is the most common reason written requests come back unprocessed, so check that names and account numbers match your statements before you send anything.

Getting the Form and Mailing It In

Citibank does not prominently post a standardized personal-banking closure PDF on its public website. Call 1-888-CITIBANK and ask them to mail you the form, or visit a branch where a banker can print and walk you through it. A typed or legibly printed letter containing the elements above is equally valid.

Mail the signed document to:

Citibank Client Services

This address appears in Citibank’s Consumer Deposit Account Agreement and its Electronic Fund Transfer notice for account correspondence.1Citibank. Important Reminder Regarding Unauthorized Electronic Fund Transfers and Error Resolution Procedures Send it Certified Mail with return receipt so you have a dated record of when Citibank received it. That timestamp matters if a fee posts between your mailing date and the bank’s processing date.

Time It to Avoid Extra Fees

Each month an unwanted account stays open, it may accrue a service fee. Citibank’s current schedule:

  • Access Checking: $5 per month
  • Regular Checking: $15 per month
  • Citi Savings and Citi Accelerate Savings: $4.50 per month

These fees are waived for Citigold, Citigold Private Client, and Citi Priority customers, and savings fees are waived with a $500 average monthly balance or an accompanying Citi checking account.2Citibank. Simplified Banking Fact Sheet Citibank does not prorate or waive the final month’s fee when you close, so mailing your request near the start of a statement cycle can save you one last charge.

If the Account Is a CD

A CD closed before maturity carries an early withdrawal penalty. Citibank calculates it from the original term:

  • Terms of one year or less: 90 days of simple interest on the amount withdrawn.
  • Terms longer than one year: 180 days of simple interest on the amount withdrawn.

Even a partial withdrawal triggers the full penalty.3Citibank. What to Know about CD Early Withdrawal Penalties The exception is Citibank’s No Penalty CD, which allows a single full-balance withdrawal after the first six days without a penalty. If your CD is close to maturing, compare the forfeited interest against what you would earn by moving the money now before you decide.

After You Submit

Citibank does not publish a specific processing timeline for mailed closure requests. Allow at least two weeks from the date the bank receives your letter before following up. In-branch closures are typically immediate, and you leave with a cashier’s check or written confirmation.

Once the account is closed, Citibank issues a final statement showing a zero balance. Any remaining funds arrive as a cashier’s check at the address you provided, or by electronic transfer to the external account you designated. Keep the final statement. It is your proof that the account was closed cleanly, and you may need it if a stray automatic payment later tries to hit the account.

Online access to the closed account ends after processing. Other Citibank accounts you hold remain reachable through the same login. Watch your mail in the weeks after closure for any final notices or tax documents covering interest earned during the account’s last year.
