There is no paper AF Form 1227 for you to fill out by hand. The form is what the Air Force Virtual Education Center (AFVEC) generates after your tuition assistance request has been approved, and learning how to fill out AF Form 1227 really means learning how to submit the funding request in AFVEC so the completed authorization prints at the end for you to hand to your school. The benefit pays up to $250 per semester credit hour and $4,500 per fiscal year, and your request has to clear both your supervisor and the base Education Office before the form is issued.1MyAirForceBenefits. What to Have Ready Before You Log In
Every field in the AFVEC request comes from information your school has already given you. Gather these first, because guessing on any one of them is what causes rejections and payment mismatches:
- Course number and title, exactly as they appear in the school catalog.
- Course start and end dates that match the term dates on record at your school.
- Tuition per credit hour. If your school uses a flat rate for the term, divide the total tuition by the number of credits to get the per-hour figure.
- Number of credits and credit type (semester hours or quarter hours).
- Your supervisor’s email address. The approval request routes there and often lands in junk mail, so tell your supervisor to watch for it.
You also need an evaluated degree plan on file for anything beyond your first two courses. For your first two classes, an unofficial plan from the school works. After that, the school has to evaluate all prior credits (CCAF, CLEP, DSST, AP) and produce a formal plan listing the school’s name, your student ID, total credits required, credits already transferred, and each remaining course. Upload it through the AFVEC messaging system or email it to your base Education Office.
One more prerequisite the system enforces: you must have completed the annual Virtual Benefits Training in AFVEC. Without it, the request won’t advance.
Submitting the Request in AFVEC
Log in at afvec.us.af.mil and click Apply for funding. AFVEC walks you through the sequence in a fixed order:
- Verify your supervisor’s information.
- Confirm your student information.
- Accept the terms and conditions.
- Select the Education Office that will review the request. Choose the office at your current duty station, not the one nearest your school.
- Select your institution and campus. Online students usually pick “Main campus.” The institution’s OPEID code fills in automatically once the school is selected.
- Select the specific course and enter the course details you gathered above.
The summary screen is where you catch mistakes. The most common one is entering the wrong tuition-per-credit-hour amount, which leads to either rejection or a payment that doesn’t line up with your school’s invoice. If your school charges above the $250 cap, enter $250 and plan to pay the overage yourself. Textbooks and non-reimbursable fees are not covered. Lab fees and similar course-specific charges may be listed, but confirm with your Education Office what your school classifies as reimbursable before you submit.1MyAirForceBenefits. When to Submit
The window is firm. Submit no earlier than 45 calendar days and no later than 7 calendar days before the course start date. Anything outside that window will be rejected, and there is no informal workaround.1MyAirForceBenefits. Military Tuition Assistance (MilTA) Submitting early in the 45-day window gives you room to absorb a slow supervisor response or an Education Office correction.
Who Can Use TA and What Will Block the Request
Active duty Air Force and Space Force members are the primary users. Air National Guard members on continuous active duty orders can request TA through the same AFVEC system.2Acquisition.GOV. Army Federal Acquisition Regulation Supplement 8-7 – Use of the GPC for Tuition Assistance The governing policy is DAFI 36-2681, Voluntary Education Programs, which replaced the voluntary education chapter previously in DAFI 36-2670.3Department of the Air Force. DAFI 36-2670 – Total Force Development Enlisted members must have completed initial skills training (tech school) before they can apply.
Several conditions cause AFVEC to deny the request before it ever reaches your supervisor: an active Unfavorable Information File (UIF), a failed or overdue fitness test, a referral performance report, or being on the control roster.4Joint Base Langley-Eustis. Major Changes to AF Tuition Assistance, Delays Expected Clear those first if any apply.
The course itself has to sit on an approved degree plan leading to an associate, bachelor’s, or master’s degree. TA won’t fund random electives, professional development courses outside your plan, or a lateral or lower-level degree than one you already hold. If you already have a bachelor’s, TA won’t cover a second one. Enlisted members do get one narrow exception: after completing a Community College of the Air Force Associate of Applied Science, you can still use TA to pursue one civilian associate degree.
Approval Routing and Printing the Form
Your request goes to your supervisor first, who confirms the course won’t conflict with duty. After supervisor approval, the base Education Office checks it against your degree plan. This two-step review is where most delays happen. A supervisor who doesn’t open the email, or a mismatch between the course you picked and what your degree plan actually lists, will stall the request until it’s too late to meet the 7-day cutoff.
Once the Education Office grants final approval, log back into AFVEC, open the approved funding request, and print the PDF. That printed document is your AF Form 1227, the signed authorization your school needs to bill the Air Force directly. Deliver it to the school’s financial aid or military education office. Because the Air Force pays the school on your behalf, you should not be paying tuition out of pocket for the covered amount. If a school asks you to pay upfront for TA-covered tuition, the form either hasn’t reached the right office or the school’s military billing setup has a problem. Sort it out before the term starts.
After the Course: Grades and Repayment
The form is only half the deal. You are responsible for making sure your final grade appears in your education record within 60 days after the course ends. Check AFVEC to confirm it posted; don’t assume the school pushed it through. The minimum acceptable grade is a C for undergraduate courses and a B for graduate courses. Anything below that triggers repayment of the full tuition amount, either as a lump sum or through payroll deductions spread over up to six months.
Dropping a class for personal reasons (a non-military withdrawal) also triggers repayment. Schools return unearned TA on a prorated basis through the first 60 percent of the enrollment period; after that, the full amount is considered earned and owed. A military-related withdrawal such as a deployment or PCS is handled differently, and your Education Office works with the school so you aren’t stuck with a debt for something outside your control.
