To fill out a W-9 for OnlyFans, log in to your creator dashboard, open the banking or payments section, and complete the electronic form with your legal name, federal tax classification, mailing address, and either your Social Security Number or Employer Identification Number, then sign and submit. OnlyFans uses the information to issue you a 1099-NEC at year-end and to keep your payouts flowing without backup withholding.
What to Have Ready Before You Start
Pull these together first so you can complete the form in one sitting:
- Your full legal name exactly as it appears on your Form 1040. If you operate through a registered business, have the legal business name too.
- Your taxpayer identification number. For most individual creators this is a Social Security Number. Sole proprietors who prefer not to give the platform their SSN can apply for a free Employer Identification Number instead.1Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 6109 – Identifying Numbers
- A permanent U.S. mailing address where you reliably receive mail, since OnlyFans will send your 1099-NEC there.
- Your federal tax classification. Most creators are “Individual/sole proprietor.” A single-member LLC you have not elected to treat as a corporation is still treated as a sole proprietor for federal tax purposes.2Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for the Requester of Form W-9
Getting these right the first time matters. A mismatch between the name and TIN you enter can trigger backup withholding, which is a 24 percent cut the IRS takes from your future payouts until you fix the problem.3Internal Revenue Service. Backup Withholding
Filling Out Each Line
Line 1: Legal Name
Enter your full legal name as it appears on your Form 1040. This line cannot be blank.4Internal Revenue Service. Form W-9 – Request for Taxpayer Identification Number and Certification Your creator screen name does not go here.
Line 2: Business Name
Only fill this in if you have one. If you run a single-member LLC, put your personal name on Line 1 and the LLC name on Line 2. If you operate as an individual with no separate business name, leave it blank.
Line 3: Federal Tax Classification
Check one box. Most OnlyFans creators check “Individual/sole proprietor or single-member LLC.” If you have a single-member LLC that you have not elected to treat as a corporation, that same box is correct; do not use the LLC box, which is for multi-member entities.2Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for the Requester of Form W-9 Checking the wrong box, such as “C Corporation” when you are actually a sole proprietor, creates a records mismatch that can hold up your payments.
Lines 5 and 6: Address
Enter your street address, city, state, and ZIP code. This is where OnlyFans mails your 1099-NEC and any other tax correspondence.4Internal Revenue Service. Form W-9 – Request for Taxpayer Identification Number and Certification
Part I: Taxpayer Identification Number
Enter your nine-digit SSN or EIN. The IRS matches this number automatically against the name on Line 1, so a single transposed digit can flag your account.4Internal Revenue Service. Form W-9 – Request for Taxpayer Identification Number and Certification Individuals without a business entity use their SSN. If you obtained an EIN for your sole proprietorship or LLC, use that instead.
Part II: Certification and Signature
Signing under penalties of perjury confirms three things: your TIN is correct, you are not currently subject to backup withholding (unless you are), and you are a U.S. citizen or resident alien.4Internal Revenue Service. Form W-9 – Request for Taxpayer Identification Number and Certification OnlyFans accepts electronic signatures, and the IRS treats a compliant electronic signature the same as a handwritten one.2Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for the Requester of Form W-9 Without a valid signature the form is incomplete and OnlyFans cannot release your payouts.
Submitting the Form Through OnlyFans
OnlyFans does not want a PDF upload. Log in to your creator dashboard, go to the banking or payments section, and fill in each field on the platform’s built-in electronic W-9. The system then walks you through the e-signature prompts to finalize the certification.
After you click submit, the platform’s compliance team reviews what you entered against the identification documents already on your account. Your account usually sits in a pending status during that review, and withdrawals stay locked until the tax documentation is confirmed.
Using an EIN to Keep Your SSN Off the Platform
If you are uncomfortable putting your Social Security Number into a creator platform, you can apply for a free Employer Identification Number and use that on the W-9 instead, even with no employees and no formal business structure. The application is on the IRS website, and the number is issued immediately once you finish.5Internal Revenue Service. Get an Employer Identification Number
To apply you need a valid SSN or ITIN for yourself as the “responsible party,” and your principal place of business must be in the United States. The online application cannot be saved partway through and times out after 15 minutes of inactivity, so set aside time to do it in one pass. Print the confirmation letter for your records. Then enter the EIN in Part I of the W-9 in place of your SSN.
When to Send an Updated W-9
Your first W-9 is not permanent. File a new one whenever the underlying information changes:
- Legal name change after a marriage, divorce, or court order — update Line 1 so your 1099-NEC matches your current government records.
- New address — update Lines 5 and 6, and write “NEW” at the top of the form to flag the change.4Internal Revenue Service. Form W-9 – Request for Taxpayer Identification Number and Certification
- Change in business structure — moving from a sole proprietorship to a corporation or multi-member LLC usually means a new EIN and a different tax classification, and both need to appear on a fresh W-9.4Internal Revenue Service. What Happens if the Form Is Wrong or Missing
If you fail to provide a valid TIN or never return the W-9 at all, OnlyFans is required to start backup withholding at 24 percent on your earnings.3Internal Revenue Service. Backup Withholding That money goes to the IRS, and you only get it back by claiming the withholding as a credit on your tax return. Your cash flow takes the hit in the meantime.
Giving false information carries its own consequences. A false statement that results in no backup withholding when it should have applied can bring a $500 civil penalty, and willfully falsifying the certifications can lead to criminal fines and imprisonment.4Internal Revenue Service. One boundary worth knowing: the W-9 only tells OnlyFans who you are for reporting purposes. Whether the platform sends you a 1099-NEC depends on how much you earn — the threshold rises from $600 to $2,000 for payments made after December 31, 2025 — but you owe tax on all of your OnlyFans income regardless of whether a form is issued.6Internal Revenue Service.
