For a married couple filing jointly with two dependents, filling out the W-4 comes down to three things: choose “Married filing jointly” in Step 1, coordinate Step 2 if both spouses work, and enter your dependent credits in Step 3 on one spouse’s form only. With two qualifying children under 17, that Step 3 entry is $4,400 ($2,200 each). If one dependent is 17 or older or is a qualifying relative, that person is worth $500 instead of $2,200.1Internal Revenue Service. Child Tax Credit The form hasn’t used allowances since 2020; everything runs on dollar amounts now.2Internal Revenue Service. FAQs on the 2020 Form W-4
Each working spouse fills out a separate W-4 for their own employer. The two forms have to be filled out as a pair, not independently, because the dependent credits and the two-income adjustment only work correctly when they appear on the right form.
Step 1: Filing Status
Enter your name, address, and Social Security number, and check the box for “Married filing jointly.” Both spouses do this on their respective forms. Step 1 is required; Step 5 (your signature) is also required, and the form is invalid without it.3IRS. Form W-4 2026 Employee’s Withholding Certificate
If only one spouse works, you can skip Step 2 entirely and move to Step 3.
Step 2: What to Do If Both Spouses Work
When both spouses earn wages, each employer withholds as if its paycheck were the household’s only income. Combined, the two incomes sit in higher brackets than either employer assumes, so without a Step 2 adjustment you will owe money in April. There are three ways to fix this.
Option 1: The IRS Tax Withholding Estimator
The online estimator at irs.gov is the most accurate option. You enter wages, credits, deductions, and any other income for both spouses, and the tool gives you an exact dollar figure to put on Line 4(c) of one spouse’s W-4. A slider lets you dial in the refund size you want.4Internal Revenue Service. Improved Tax Withholding Estimator Helps Workers Target the Refund They Want Use this method if either spouse has self-employment income, investment income, or anything beyond a steady W-2 paycheck.
Option 2: The Multiple Jobs Worksheet
Page 3 of the W-4 instructions has a worksheet with lookup tables. Find the row for the higher-paying job’s annual wages and the column for the lower-paying job, and the table gives you an additional withholding amount for Line 4(c). The 2026 tables cover wage ranges from under $10,000 up through $525,000 and above for joint filers.3IRS. Form W-4 2026 Employee’s Withholding Certificate This method works if your incomes are stable and you’d rather stay on paper.
Option 3: The Step 2(c) Checkbox
The quickest option is to check the box on Line 2(c). Both spouses must check it on their own W-4s. The checkbox tells each employer to use the single-filer standard deduction and brackets instead of the joint ones. It works best when the two paychecks are roughly similar; if one spouse earns significantly more, the checkbox tends to over-withhold.3IRS. Form W-4 2026 Employee’s Withholding Certificate You get the extra money back as a refund, which some people prefer and some don’t.
Whichever option you choose, only one spouse should fill in Step 3. If both spouses enter the dependent credits, you double-count them and guarantee under-withholding.
Step 3: Entering the Credits for Your Two Dependents
Step 3 is where the two dependents actually show up on the form. Only one spouse fills in Step 3, usually the higher earner. The dollar figure you enter depends on the ages and relationships of the two dependents.
Two Qualifying Children Under 17
Each qualifying child under 17 is worth up to $2,200 in Child Tax Credit for 2026.1Internal Revenue Service. Child Tax Credit A qualifying child must be under 17 at the end of the tax year and must have a Social Security number valid for employment.5Internal Revenue Service. Child Tax Credit 4 For two qualifying children, enter $4,400 on Line 3.
The age cutoff is strict. If a child turns 17 at any point during 2026, they don’t qualify for the Child Tax Credit for that year, and you’d use the Credit for Other Dependents figure for that child instead.
One Child and One Older Dependent
A dependent who doesn’t meet the Child Tax Credit rules — a child 17 or older, or a qualifying relative such as an elderly parent — may still qualify for the Credit for Other Dependents, worth up to $500.1Internal Revenue Service. Child Tax Credit If one of your two dependents is a qualifying child and the other is a 17-year-old or qualifying relative, enter $2,700 on Line 3 ($2,200 plus $500).
Two Older Dependents or Qualifying Relatives
If neither dependent is a child under 17 and both qualify as other dependents, enter $1,000 on Line 3 ($500 each).
The Income Limit on Step 3
Step 3 on the form itself has an income gate. You can use it as described only if your total household income is $400,000 or less filing jointly ($200,000 for other filing statuses).3IRS. Form W-4 2026 Employee’s Withholding Certificate Above that threshold the credit begins to phase out, so entering the full amount would leave you under-withheld. Households near or above that line should use the IRS estimator rather than filling in Step 3 manually.
Step 4: The Optional Lines
Step 4 has three lines you can use to fine-tune withholding. None are required, but ignoring them when they apply is one of the most common reasons a tax bill shows up in April.
Line 4(a): Other Income
If you expect non-wage income during the year, such as interest, dividends, capital gains, or retirement distributions, enter the estimated income amount here. This is the income itself, not the tax on it. For $5,000 of expected taxable interest, you enter $5,000, and the payroll system factors it into your withholding automatically.3IRS. Form W-4 2026 Employee’s Withholding Certificate Doing this usually means you won’t need to make separate estimated payments on that income.
Line 4(b): Deductions
Line 4(b) is for households whose deductions will exceed the standard deduction. For 2026, the standard deduction for joint filers is $32,200.6Internal Revenue Service. IRS Releases Tax Inflation Adjustments for Tax Year 2026 Most joint filers don’t itemize because the standard deduction already covers more than their deductible expenses. If your mortgage interest, state and local taxes, and charitable contributions combined push past $32,200, complete the Deductions Worksheet on page 3 of the instructions and enter the result here. If not, leave Line 4(b) blank.
Line 4(c): Extra Withholding
Line 4(c) requests a flat dollar amount of additional withholding each pay period. If the IRS estimator or the Multiple Jobs Worksheet gave you a number for Step 2, this is where it goes. Some people also use this line as a forced-savings tool, adding $25 or $50 a paycheck to build toward a refund. There’s no correct amount; it depends on whether you’d rather hold the cash during the year or receive it in April.
When to Redo Your W-4
A W-4 doesn’t expire, but it goes stale as soon as your situation changes. The IRS recommends a check at the start of each year and after any major life event: marriage, divorce, the birth or adoption of a child, buying a home, or starting a second job.7Internal Revenue Service. Tax Withholding – How to Get It Right A household that goes from one income to two, or one where a spouse gets a large raise, is almost always under-withheld on the old form. Running the IRS estimator once a year, ideally after January’s first full paychecks, catches most problems before they grow into an April bill.
